Investigate the simple diagram to the right, viewed from above the earth’s

north pole.

a. What phase does a person on earth see here? Give a "moon observation" for the case shown, reporting the appearance of the moon and the angle between the sun and moon. (Hint: shading in the dark part of the moon helps, here.)

b. For the case shown in the drawing, will the moon set a few hours

before the sun sets or a few hours after the sun sets? (Hint: Shading in the dark half of the earth helps, here.)

c. For the day shown in the diagram, when is the moon visible? Approximately when does it rise and set? When would be the best time to determine the moon angle? (Hint: Recall the most important rule about the behavior of light and don’t be afraid to draw on your diagram....)

The moon will set a few hours after the sun sets.

45° West

The moon will “lag” about 3 hours behind the sun - it will rise (roughly) 3 hours later, and set(roughly) 3 hours later. Late afternoon/early evening would probably be the best time to get a good moon observation, here.

A true lunar month is 29.5 days (answers from your data will vary, though, and won’t be this exact).

> Some cultures use a lunar calendar, so that each month starts with a new moon. How many lunar months are there in a year?

(Hint: Use your data to figure out how long a single lunar month is, first! Your final answer might not be a whole number.)

365.25 days in a year365.25/29.5 = 12.37 lunar months in a year

This means most years have 12 lunar months, but sometimes you get 13.

TOPICS:TEMPERATURE (THERMAL ENERGY)

Heat and temperature

How does heat travel?

Heat as a form of energy
