PowerPoint

Who created PowerPoint and why?

• Robert Gaskins created PowerPoint

• Dennis Austin, programmer

• In mid-1980s

• Graphics oriented computers

• Mac computers

• Windows version

What is PowerPoint?

• Presentation software

• Graphical approach to presentations

• Offers word processing, outlining, drawing, graphing, and presentation

• Used in business and education

• Referred to as PowerPoint, Microsoft PowerPoint, Office PowerPoint and Microsoft Office PowerPoint Word 2007

The effectiveness of PowerPoint

• Helps in organizing clear, concise, and complete lectures

• Avoids run-on sentences that may be difficult to follow

• Can easily insert relevant images, sounds, charts, or videos

The effectiveness of PowerPoint cont.

• Can break down long-winded narratives

• Can initially introduce prompts and easily return to them later

• Aids in “close reading,” and can color-code important details

• Can literally point to most important words for emphasis

The effectiveness of PowerPoint cont.

• According to Catherine Adams in “PowerPoint, habits of mind, and classroom culture” (J. Curriculum Studies, 2006) it depends on how the technology is used by the teacher and how often the teacher uses it.

• According to this review, “Survey data suggest students find PowerPoint a useful cognitive tool and the provided electronic files and slide printouts helpful for review” (Frey and Birnbaum 2002).

The effectiveness of PowerPoint cont.

• However, most importantly, the article stresses that the software is only good as the teacher. If the teacher uses the medium as a crutch instead of a tool, the authors insist, the class is in for less than innovative teaching, so teachers need to make sure they put quality content into their slides and not hide behind the impressive formatting.

• Power Point is especially effective for organizing material and is great as a summarization tool. Teachers who sometimes have problems focusing or keeping on topic might fight this medium of technology particularly useful as a teaching aide. Like any teaching tool, if used correctly in class, it can have a very positive impact on a class environment.

Student use of PowerPoint

• Autobiographical Stories – Students can create short autobiographical stories about themselves. Scanned photos can be inserted

for interest. Once the slides are complete, you can put them together in a presentation to show an audience.

• Interactive Book Reports - Have students create a PowerPoint presentation about books they read.

• Poetry Readings - Students can create slides exhibiting their personal poetry along with a voice recording.

• Any report that you would like them to create and be interactive (state, book, project for Science or Social Studies).

Teachers use of PowerPoint

• Flash Cards

• Field Trip Slide Shows

• Readers Theaters

• Group Slide Shows.

• Science Presentations

• Student Portfolios

• Class Yearbook-Type Presentations
