Group Work Log 7-Win as Much as You Can
The purpose of this activity was to show us that you have to build cohesion when
working in a group, because it will produce more effective outcomes in the end. Also that you
have to look for the self interest of the group at times and for your own self interest. There are
times in your group that you will have to use the different conflict styles to achieve the best work
possible from your group.
1. At first my teammate (Matt Geslin) and I did believe that the You in the title meant thetwo of us. At the beginning of the class Matt asked you what the correct definition of you
meant but of course you could not answer. It wasnt later on in the activity that we
realized what you truly meant. Once the group was able to discuss we realized that since
the room was divided in half that it was more than likely group against group and we had
to collaborate with one another. Because at the beginning we were only looking out for
our own teams self interest.
My whole group I think throughout the whole activity thought that we were trying to win
money because it was a competition in some since. Later on after we were able to discuss
the activity it was clear that we should have been earning the trust of our other group
members. I think if the you had have been defined from the start the game would have
been played differently the group would have made a strategy of compromise that we
would have all worked together so the whole group would have had the most points.
2. I think that once the teams became more competitive within our group there wasprocedural and substantive conflict, because some group members wanted everyone to
put their xs in the middle of the table or for a plan to be devised. During one of the
rounds TC and Matt went against the groups plan.

3. When trust started to break down was when all group members were not showing Ys sowe could all prosper, so then every team started to look out only for themselves. Also
some members were trying to build cohesion throughout and wanted to use collaboration.
4. For both of our teams no one won because we both tied. No one was truly successful. Mygroup however once realizing that we were probably in a competition against the other
group decided that we would collaborate and build cohesion I feel that we did use the
AEIOU model in our heads and started to work together.
5. I dont think that any of the teams truly felt betrayed by the other team members, but myteam could have won if TC and Matt would have followed the groups plan from the
beginning. So there was slight distrust because you werent sure that each group would
do what they said.
6. One of the main consequences of having a competitive approach in my group was that wedid not win in the end. When one team or person only looks out for themselves it hurts
the whole group in return. If we would have all worked together from the beginning and
not have been competitive we would have created the best possible outcome.
