A Word from TAPPI President Larry N. Montague

Whoever thinks growing older means slowing down doesn’t know TAPPI.

As we completed our 101st year in 2016, TAPPI continued its efforts to offer members the finest educational resources, research, and networking opportunities around the globe. I am pleased to report we did not disappoint.

In another first this year, RISI, one of the most respected providers to global forest products industry information, merged its Pulp and Paper International publication with TAPPI’s Paper360º. Already the industry’s leading publication, this partnership ensures that TAPPI members will receive only the most timely and critical news, along with interviews, mill case

studies, and topical feature articles.

Following on the heels of yet another successful PaperCon in May, which attracted the most mill attendees in its history, a new event was created. Tissue 2017 Conference and Expo will be held in Miami, FL October 3 - 6 and bring together TAPPI technical content with RISI expertise. Featuring the latest market trends, grade expectation and competitive data for the North American Tissue market, it has all the hallmarks of being yet another ground-breaking event.

Every four years, TAPPI, along with AICC, holds SuperCorrExpo, a premier event that showcases industry products and services. This year, the event was relocated for the first time to Orlando, FL, to help facilitate international participation. With more than 5000 attendees and 325 exhibitors, I am proud to report – mission accomplished!

During 2016, TAPPI also expanded its eLearning courses. Added this year were paper manufacturing, pulping, and development programs structured in flexible, convenient formats. On the 2017 horizon is a Tissue Certification Program featuring a combination of face-to-face and online classes. Once completed, this course is designed to ensure a basic level of tissue-making knowledge is achieved.

And, speaking of online improvements, TAPPI continued its efforts to refine and enhance our newly redesigned website. Responding to member input, we incorporated “faceted filtering” in the search component, which helps narrow or broaden searches via a new taxonomy. TAPPI Connect, our secure, online forum for communication, networking and problem-solving, continues to grow in user numbers. If you have not yet benefitted from this amazing collaborative tool, I strongly encourage you to see how it helps support day-to-day work strategy.

Finally, I am perhaps most proud to report that in 2016 TAPPI achieved all of its fiscal year goals. Especially gratifying is that we expanded our global presence to 66 countries, and more than 2,600 new members. With over 8,800 total members, we grew nearly seven percent over the previous year, and achieved the highest membership numbers since February 2008.

Thanks to all our members and supporters who helped make 2016 such a successful year. With your continued involvement, I believe “the best is yet to come.”

Sincerely,

Larry N. Montague

TAPPI President & CEO

NEWBack in Print!Corrugator Bonding: A TAPPI Press Anthology of Published Papers, Second Edition

Back in print for the first time in more than10 years! This is a revision of the 1997 TAPPI PRESS Anthology of the same title. This anthology includes the work of researchers around the world on corrugator bonding and gives a better understanding of research findings on the properties of linerboard and corrugating medium as well

as the variables that contribute to improved bonding. “The Corrugator Bonding Anthology is an unsurpassed resource for anyone who wants an introduction as well as insight into the corrugated world. It will never be outdated.” - Jon Porter, Senior Instructor/Process Specialist, JPorter ConsultingItem code: 0101R265 • Member: $75 • List: $97

Fundamentals of Electrospinning& Electrospun Nanofibers

This NEW, comprehensive reference analyzes the methods whereby nanofibers are spun, collected and fabricated into various fibrous structures. Practical information is focused on understanding and designing devices to fabricate nanofibers with many different shapes and internal structures. The text explains the workings, quantitative

specifications and set-up of virtually all formation technologies, including solvent and solvent-free, as well as needle and needleless spinning methods for nanofibers made from polymers, carbon and other materials. Special attention is given to strategies for overcoming defects in nanofibers and controlling their overall quality. Additional references, illustrations, charts, data, and useful calculations are included on nearly every page. “This book will be useful both to students…and those researchers who actively work in materials science and engineering, nanotechnology, fibers and textiles…I am confident it will be a valuable resource to promote the development of various electrospun nanofibers and yarns for practical applications.” - From the Foreword by Liming Dai, Case Western Reserve UniversityItem code: 17ELECTRONANO • Member: $125 • List: $139

Boiler and Cooling Reference Seriesby Colin Frayne These comprehensive references are the most practical field guides ever written on steam and boiler water treatment. This two-volume set analyzing the whole spectrum of boiler and cooling systems, including those used in residential complexes, commercial and institutional buildings, and industrial facilities. “After being recommended by a friend several years ago, I looked into the Boiler and Cooling reference books by Colin Frayne and found them to be a useful tool for anyone involved with the primary utility areas of a paper mill or power plant. The set is comprised of some of best information available through several industry sources, the material is comprehensive, and the subject matter is presented in a well thought-out format. If you are looking for a reference book on water treatment associated with the boiler and cooling applications, this is a good set to have.” - Jim Graham, Manager - Paper Industry Utilities

COMING SOONExtrusion Coating Manual, Fifth Edition This completely revised and updated fifth edition manual is the culmination of years of work by more than 50 well-known industry experts from around the world and contains 56 sections within seven chapters. This NEW, fifth edition represents a dramatic modernization in technology over the

previous fourth edition, published in 1998, with an additional 17 contributors and 20 more sections. Since the fourth edition, advances in computer design and machining, resin technology, and coextrusion technology have all advanced to the point that extrusion coating and laminating now compete with traditional rigid materials in many packaging markets. These advances have increased productivity, reduced waste, and provide more product options available to the industry and the consumer. The fifth edition reviews as many practical aspects of the process, materials, equipment, and products as possible in one concise manual. The goal of this hands-on, training manual is to convey sufficient knowledge to the engineer, technician, operator or manager to understand the aspects of the extrusion coating process.Item code: 0101R345 • Member: $190 • List: $247 Item code: 0101R345EL • Member: $190 • List: $247Purchase the SetItem code: 0101R345BUN • Member: $320 • List: $355
