From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor:

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing com-

pared to the glory to be revealed in us. (Romans 8:18)

When we are wondering why things are happening to us and around us we can feel confused and abandoned. Why O Lord?! Through the prophet Isaiah, God says My word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it. St. Paul says that the suffer-ings of the present time will lead us to share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. Jesus tells a parable that speaks of the possible outcomes of a farmer who went out to sow. When I am having a crazy day the phrase “This too belongs” helps me. I learned this from the writings of Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM, who teaches that the ability to step back, sit still and simply name what is going on has a powerful effect on our peace of mind. All that we experience is a piece of the puzzle that life is. Fact is, some-times we have no idea why things are happening and we have no control; all we can do is discern our appropriate response. Other times, by quietly naming what we are experiencing we can realize what God is asking us to

Continued in next column …

do and then do it. When we can prayerfully sit with all that is going on in life, we will know a serenity that will sustain us through the day. So why are we dealing with ill-

nesses? This too belongs so that God’s glory can be revealed!

Why are day to day activities try-ing to choke out our spiritual lives? So that we can prepare more fertile ground in our hearts to receive Christ.

Why do we have to deal with COVID-19? So we can bear the fruit of generosity and tenderness 100 fold.

Why are we groaning and strug-gling now? So that we can reach out for God’s redemption for us personally.

In God’s plan nothing is accidental, nothing is happenstance. God’s will is unfolding in the struggles of today so that we can live in the glorious freedom of the children of God.

do con enfermedades?
