THANK YOU

WORKING TOGETHERTo the Agritech Expo Visitors,

The 2019 Agritech Expo, the sixth since inception, was yet again a resounding success.

I would like to express profound gratitude to the Republic of Zambia President, Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu for gracing the Expo the fourth time consecutively. His support for the Agritech Expo underlines how far reaching he would like to see the majority of the country’s citizenry to come out of poverty, and indeed spar agriculture development in the entire region.

Agriculture remains the key to ending poverty.

I would also like to express massive appreciation to the organisers, Spintelligent, who have successfully managed to grow the Agritech Expo with us from a mere 30, 000 square metres of land to 70, 000 square metres of land. Spintelligent staff’s ingenuity, hard work, will power to pre-sign sponsorships and plan the Expo months ahead of time, thinking through every finer detail, has been the backbone of the Agritech success during the last six years.

Growing the agriculture sector in modern times, demands efficiency, precision and timeliness. It calls for the embracing of new technologies, modern machinery and information exchange.

I am humbled by the huge presence of exhibitors, international pavilions, farmers, agriculture experts and sponsors who made it possible that all agricultural solutions were once again found under one “roof”.

It takes sacrifice, time and resources to make the Expo happen and I say, thank you for the unbending support.

As we look to 2020, we look to each and every one of you; partners and sponsors, farmers and captains of the industry; to continue working with us as we move towards growing our agriculture both in Zambia and beyond. It is through working together that we will achieve this.

I thank you all.

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS

Finance and lending solutions taking agriculture to the next levelSponsored and moderated by: First National Bank (FNB) Zambia Limited

Proposed solutions• The need to develop viable

value chains which are sustainable. This will enable the financiers to guarantee payments which thus make financial institutions more comfortable to engage with the agricultural sector.

• Value chains must be viable to promote consistency in production. Within every value chain financial institutions must be able to honour commitments. They must be able to guarantee production, delivery and payments to benefit the players in the chain.

• It is known that farming can be unpredictable relating to weather and other factors. It is therefore important for the sector to create a level of predictability to anticipate some of these challenges.

Incorporation of clean energy into the farming mix Moderated by: Sun Ray Power Co. Zambia

Proposed solutions• Due to load shedding

in the past, numerous farmers could not irrigate as pumps required energy. Strong feeling from the agricultural community to be less dependent on the grid, and opt for green storage, drying and central storage options.

• Farmers not having access to the grid need alternative sources of energy, and clean renewable energy options need to be considered and driven stronger.

• Renewable energy is ideal provided there is constant demand.

• Solar thermal and solar photovoltaic (PV) combined can make ice that is ideal for refrigeration.

Risk mitigation and farming operation insuranceModerated by: Insurers Association of Zambia

Proposed solutions• Cooperatives and

unions should be focal points for training on risk management and insurance.

• Cooperatives and unions must not underestimate their ability to leverage their numbers to negotiate for insurance cover that suits their needs.

• Agriculture extension officers have a big role to play, and this can include advising on risk management and insurance. However they will need proper training on insurance.

• Agriculture insurance success stories need to be publicised as part of educating farmers. Short codes (such as the *619# financial literacy information code) can be used to educate farmers, as many farmers have at least a basic phone.

Developing Zambia’s value additions sector within agricultureModerated by: PwC Zambia

Proposed solutions• Cheap finance should be

available for the acquisition of capital equipment and machinery for viable projects.

• The government should develop policies that are aimed at developing and supporting the value chain rather than giving priority only to the input support schemes or traditional agricultural activities.

• Government to work on the feeder roads to improve transportation of produce from farmers to markets.

• Donor funded value chain activities should be designed in such a way that the target group achieves maximum benefits rather than the majority of the funds being channelled towards support activities only.

THE PROPOSED SOLUTIONS DERIVED FROM THE ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS WILL FORM AN INTEGRAL PART TOWARDS THE GROWTH OF ZAMBIA’S AGRICULTURAL SECTOR.

OUTREACH PROGRAMME

Since the Agritech Outreach Programme was launched five years ago, it has accomplished a great improvement of the school and the students’ learning environment, thanks to the generous sponsorships and donations from our partners.

Agritech Outreach Programme has been the CSR project of choice over the past 5 years.

We believe education is the way to reduce poverty, inequality and build a positive and sustainable future for families, farmers, communities, and the country at large.

This programme was launched in 2015 with a vision to improve the educational environment for children in need of an education.
