PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
When I wrote our vision statement “To provide a
progressive centre for quality learning that develops
students intellectually, emotionally and socially to
succeed in an “unpredictable world” the current
scenario was not in my thoughts. I think we are all
still processing what is happening in our own country
and around the globe and what our community
looks like in the next few months.
We need to have health at the forefront of our
minds in all the decisions we make. How are we
going to contribute to overcoming COVID19 – we
all have a role. We also need to understand that we
will overcome this pandemic and our communities
will recover. However many aspects of life after this
may be different.
As we move into greater government restrictions, it is
important that you as a family plan for these
restrictions. What changes are you making to
prepare for no sport, limited outings, increasing
social distancing strategies? It is important to discuss
these as a family and come up with ideas to
manage this e.g. stocking up on craft materials,
board games, books and DVD’s. Open discussions
and planning will help ease anxiety.
The letter we sent from the government yesterday announced the four Student Free Days in
week 11 for teachers to transition to flexible teaching and learning in Term 2. The department has
made it clear to schools that teachers will deliver one program regardless of where the student is
sitting. We are committed to making this equitable for all students. The department has also
launched the “Learning Hub” for staff and families, which offers advice to families who have
children learning from home along with activities that students can do. This site will be added to
continually:
https://www.education.sa.gov.au/our-learning-sa
We need your help:
All enquiries via the front office - they will direct you to the best person to offer assistance.
Please do not come on site if you are unwell.
If coming into the front office please observe social distancing.

As per my letter 25/3/20 please advise us if your student does not have access to a laptop
and/or internet.
Office 365 is available free to students. This will allow more functions (e.g. collaborative
spaces “teams” and using converted documents). For information please contact:
Sonya can talk you through installation.
Please return signed ICT agreements that were sent home.
Please read the information going home today about preparing students to learn from
home.
Please be patient – as we develop flexible learning there will be bumps along the way.
Teachers will be adjusting as we get feedback from students and each other on how to
make the processes smoother. At the other end both staff and students will be well
equipped in flexible learning which will lead to more time for teaching and learning in the
classroom.
Students – please be assured you will not be disadvantaged due to the changes in delivery. For
Year 11 and 12 subjects, SACE has made it very clear that teachers are able to adjust Learning
and Assessment Plans to ensure students are successful. Martin Westwell has made it very clear
that there will be a pathway for all year 12 students: https://www.sace.sa.edu.au/
We will be communicating with students learning from home in many ways – email, phone,
Daymap and SeeSaw and are committed to supporting our students through this very
challenging time.

AUTO
Last week Corey Absolom, Kaelah Hendry, Fred Bornholm, Matthew Drewer, Luke Emery, Max
Gutsche, Cooper Launer, Wes Goldsmith, Connor Clisby and Angus Clifford (from Ardrossan Area
School) all completed a block of their Automotive course.
They learnt about motors, brake callipers and tool maintenance. They deconstructed and rebuilt
a 4 stroke, single piston motor, built their own brake calliper and learnt around tool maintenance.

PREMIERS READING CHALLENGE Premier's Reading Challenge has changed the rules this year to allow students to read 12 of ANY
books that aren't on the PRC list. Usually they only allow 4 unlisted books. However the
preference is still for students to read as many books from the list. Encourage your students to
come into the library and choose books to take home, 12 if necessary! The PRC books are easily
identified with colour coded stickers in year levels.
Lists and lots of info on the website http://www.premiersreadingchallenge.sa.edu.au/PRC/

IN VISUAL ART – YP ART EXHIBITION
Sadly, the Yorke Peninsula Art Exhibition will no longer go ahead in 2020 due to the situation with
COVID-19. The work from R-12 that was selected to participate in the exhibition has been on
display in the library entrance. As we are now unable to use the library, below we have
displayed the selected work. We can still celebrate the success of our students!
– Ms Flynn (Visual Art Teacher)
Orlando Warren-Smith (Completed in Year 9)
Mountains at Dusk
Acrylic Paint
In this painting I explored colour mixing and
various painting techniques to create depth
and texture within a landscape.
Ben Bartsch (Completed in Year 6)
Freezing Heat
Coloured pencil
I learnt about warm and cool
colours when doing this
drawing. I really enjoyed being
able to incorporate multiple
pictures into the cactus.
Sabine Meyer (Completed in Year 5)
Self Portrait
Lead Pencil
I like the hair the most. I was
experimenting with the proportions
of the human face.
Theo Lombladt (Year 2)
The One and Only Theo
Permanent marker and water
colour
This was a portrait of myself. I
really like the sun in the sky.
Ed Tooze (Year 10) Untitled
Digital Illustration
This drawing is based on the game Csgo. Using a
Wacom tablet working in Adobe Illustrator, I used
vanishing points and orthogonal lines to create
the appearance of accurate 2-point-perspective.

Sebastian Thom (Year 2)
Bored Person
Permanent marker and water
colour
This is a portrait of me. I really like
the background and had a lot of
fun doing it.
Theo Lombladt (Year 2)
The Dinosaur Land
Permanent Marker
There are lots of dinosaurs that are
hungry. One dinosaur is fishing.
Dinosaurs are my absolutely
favourite thing to draw.
Ruby Foley (Completed in Year 5)
Abstract Bird
Acrylic Paint
I was experimenting with using
bright colours and the style
working in the style of Pete
Cromer.
Tony Lombladt (Reception)
“The Hungry Dragon”
Acrylic paint and permanent marker
The dragon eats meat and there’s bones and
little dragons. I drew this because I wish I
could fly!
Sabine Meyer (Completed in Year 5)
“Peace”
Watercolour, pencil and marker,
Pastels
This poster represents the Dove
sprinkling all its good luck and good
vibes onto earth.
Shanai Hart (Completed in Year 12)
Colours of Emotions from the Inside Out
Face Paint and Digital Photograph
This series of photos represents the changes
in emotion someone with bi-polar can go
through within a short space of time. I drew
inspiration from a 30-day abstract painting
challenge where I created an abstract
painting a day to document how I was feeling
at the time. I combined the mark making and
painting style with colour psychology aligning
to each emotion. This was then applied to
face paint on myself and photographed.

Gemma Rudduck (Year 12)
Earths Levels
Oil Acrylic, Epoxy Resin
This work was created to represent
the experimentation of acrylic paint
pouring. Using a variety of very
individual colours to then let the oil
acrylic blend, fade and to create
distinct levels within the finished
product.
Gary Nowlan (Completed in Year 9)
Dolphin Bay
Acrylic Paint
Dolphin Bay is a place that we used to visit
frequently with family from overseas. The
water is always crystal clear and there are
amazing hidden rock pools to swim in. I have a
lot of great memories of Dolphin Bay and this
is why I decided to paint it.
Rachelle Launer (Completed in Year 9)
Crazy Lady
Ink, watercolour and gel pens
I studied Del Kathryn Barton and Brett
Whiteley. These artists inspired the
colourful hair and dripping colour as
well as the black patterns. This
portrait is a representation of my out
there and unique personality and
sense of humour.
Sophie Taheny (Year 9)
Bird Houses
Lead Pencil
In this drawing I was developing my skills in 2-
point perspective and shading. I chose to do
bird houses as I wanted to create a scene that
was calming and peaceful.
Shauna Minks (Completed in Year 11)
Self Portrait
Coloured Pencil
This is a self-portrait inspired by
Fridah Kahlo’s style. It’s about being
an only child and the things we
adopt as siblings to entertain and
comfort ourselves.

HARMONY WEEK CELEBRATIONS
On the 18th of March, YAS celebrated Harmony Week. Harmony Week is about peace and
respecting diversity. To raise money everyone had the opportunity to wear orange for a gold
coin donation. Orange represents communication, freedom of ideas and mutual respect. In total
we raised $70 for the ‘Birthing Kit Foundation Australia,’ which will go towards essential medical
supplies for women giving birth in third world counties.
As an activity to celebrate Harmony Week, all students wrote messages or drew pictures of love,
peace, friendship and kindness on the basketball court. Mr Talbot then got a drone up into the
air and took photos of the court.
The Primary students held an assembly for Harmony Week. They had Mrs Hendry join them and
speak about the peace flame. She also spoke about the importance of pausing and noticing
what is going on, before reacting to a situation. The R-2 class shared their Art/Design & Tech. They
made peace lanterns out of clay and decorated them to their liking. They then wrote what they
thought harmony and peace means to them.
“Harmony sounds like good words.” – Sebastian Thom
“Harmony feels like love and happiness.” – Theo Lombladt
“Peace looks like everyone is happy.” – Olivia Smith
“Peace sounds like everyone getting along.” –Mackenzie Michels-Preuss
The 3/4 class sang the song, “I am, you are, we are Australian.”
Students also completed an Art Activity that involved mindful colouring in of a puzzle piece and
gluing their photo on the front. This signified that whilst all students are different, they also belong.

SPORT
2020 YAS SPORTS DAY
On Friday the 8th of March we had our 2020 YAS School Sports Day. We had a nice, warm day
and lots of parents and friends showed up to support and cheer on the kids.
Our three house colours; Red, Blue and Yellow all had a wonderful time on the day, and all
participated to try and win the shied. This year Red came 3rd with 396 points, Yellow came 2nd
with 729 points and Blue came 1st with 744 points.
Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to help make the day a success.
