SynopsisVolume 33 contains articles on the economic history of Europe, America and Asia and brings new analysis, and newly createddatasets to address issues of interest. Two papers focus on the US and contribute to our understanding of the Great Depression. In"Reexamining the Origins of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act", Beaudreau argues industrialists used the plight of farmers to raise tariffson manufactured goods. And Jalil and Rua show in "Inflation Expectations in the U.S. in Fall 1933” that shifts in inflationaryexpectations could be responsible for the patterns in output witnessed in 1933: an expansion in the early part of the year whichstalled by the Fall. Two papers present new data. "First Cabin Fares from New York to the British Isles, 1826-1914" by Dupont, Keelingand Weiss extends their work on understanding early tourism by creating a new series to examine the time path of first class travelover the 19th century. "Reforms and Supervisory Organizations: Lessons from the History of the Istanbul Bourse, 1873–1883" byHanedar, Hanedar, Torun and Çelikay data newly collected from the Istanbul Bourse to better understand how investors respond todifferent types of reforms. And finally, Field in "The Savings and Loan Insolvencies and the Costs of Financial Crisis" gives areinterpretation of the Savings and Loan Crises of the late 1980s and early 1990s in light of the subsequent, much more severe crisisof 2007/08.

Core-Periphery Patterns acrossthe European Union: CaseStudies and Lessons fromEastern and Southern EuropeAuthors

Adelaide Duarte Adelaide Duarte University of Coimbra, PortugalUniversity of Coimbra, Portugal

Gabriela Carmen Pascariu Gabriela Carmen Pascariu Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, RomaniaAlexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, Romania

Synopsis

The EMU debt crisis that emerged in 2010 has identified a group of Southern countries, especially Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy,as low performers exhibiting several serious macroeconomic imbalances, and it has also highlighted that EU integration experiencedby Eastern European countries (especially the latter-comers to EU) was not accompanied by a rapid process of real convergence.Since then, the research about the effects of peripherality have regained a renewed interest to ultimately ground better regionalpolicy recommendations aimed at achieving a sustained reduction of income per capita disparities across EU regions.

In this new work, Pascariu and Duarte, along with an international group of acclaimed scholars, delve into key challenges currentlyfacing the European Union. They investigate this central question: does the domestic market system lead to the development of acenter-periphery model, by highlight gaps, or does it support the convergence process? Analyzing the effects of peripherality acrossthe EU regions, a two-fold approach is used to deliver policy recommendations grounded in economic theory, and of interest toother countries and regions facing a process of integration.

SynopsisTo better understand how structure, content and meaning are interrelated, there is great potential in conceptualizing mixedstructure linkages, where social relations, events, actions and text-based information intersect. This potential is all the more salient inview of the large data flows and analytical tools that researchers can draw on. However, the increasing availability of tools and dataseem to outpace theory development. In response to these trends, this volume aims to advance theoretical understanding of howstructure, content and meaning are dynamically intertwined, in both online and offline domains. We also explain the methodologicalimplications of such investigations. This volume therefore responds to the need for in-depth analyses studying the theoretical andmethodological implications of the assumed unity of network approaches at the intersections of structure, content and meaning. With these analyses, we show promising approaches, provoke debates in the field, and suggest potential future directions.

Synopsis

The world of work is rapidly changing. What then do 21st century workplaces look like, and what factors are supporting theseworkplace changes? Globalisation, financial and labour market deregulation, and rapid technological advances have acceleratedworkplace change and skill requirements. Organisations, for example, need to increasingly manage geographically diverse andtechnologically-mediated workplace relationships. Advances in artificial intelligence and automation are further questioning thefuture and nature of work itself.

This book identifies and examines the institutions, frameworks and technologies that are emerging to support these new workpractices. It analyses changing work environments, entrepreneurial and self-employment strategies, global virtual labour markets andthe impacts of data analytics and automation on work practices and skill sets. It is critical for governments, practitioners andacademics to better understand how to harness the benefits and meet the challenges of these new organisational workplacepractices. Further, it requires informed choices and decisions on the part of individuals, as they seek to log on to work in the 21stcentury.

SynopsisThis book critically examines the organization of knowledge as it is involved in matters of digital communication, the social, culturaland political consequences of classifying, and how particular historical contexts shape ideas of information and what information toclassify and record. Due to permeation of digital infrastructures, software, and digital media in everyday life, many aspects ofcontemporary culture and society are infused with the activity and practice of classification. That means that old questions aboutclassification have their potency in modern discourses about surveillance, identify formation, big data and so on. At the same time, this situation also implies a need to reconsider these old questions and how to frame them in digital culture. This book containscontributions that consider classic library classification practices and how their choices have social, cultural and political effect, howthe organization of knowledge is not only a professional practice but is also a way of communicating and understanding digitalculture, and how what a particular historical context perceives as information has implications for the recording of that information.

SynopsisIn spite of, and because of, the attention recently paid to “big data” and the huge amount quantitative data available from online andpoint of sale transactions, qualitative and conceptual research is in greater demand than ever. Rather than the correlational andsuperficial view provided from the overflow of numerical data, qualitative and conceptual data help to make sense of what is reallygoing on among consumers. Numerical approaches are a useful first cut at detecting changes in market patterns, but they fail tohelp understand the underlying and deeper meanings of these data among individual consumers, families, and consumptioncommunities. By gathering data from observation (first hand and automated), depth interviews, projective measures, netnography, videography, qualitative marketing and consumer research help put flesh on the bones of often sterile quantitative data. This volumeprovides a good illustration of the sorts of insights that qualitative and conceptual analysis can provide. Using some of the latestqualitative research tools, this volume highlights insights about consumption ranging from how consumers process advertisingmessages, how skiers consume a ski resort, and how small retailers can combat the practice of “showrooming” by consumerscomparing online prices with mobile devices to the nature of consumer “presence, rethinking the meanings of prices, and buyingcounterfeit luxuries with friends. These and other practices provide eye-opening insights of their own. But they also spark theimagination by demonstrating what qualitative research can do and why it is an increasingly popular set of techniques.

SynopsisStudies of colonialism and empire have increasingly drawn attention to the problem of conceptualizing the political logic of colonialprojects and the circumstances of state formation in colonial contexts. However, the nature and workings of the colonial stateremains under-theorized and under-analysed.

This volume addresses the analytical challenges of the colonial state from a variety of theoretical and thematic angles, and across arange of empirical cases that stretch over a vast span historically and geographically, to provide a new approach to analyzing thecolonial state and its governmental practices.

SynopsisOppression and resistance dialectically envelope everyday life, for both the privileged and the oppressed. The disenfranchised liveunder regimes in which repression ranges from brutal to institutionally subtle. The privileged socially reproduce their rule throughideology that justifies and policy that institutionalizes subjugation. However, rejecting depression, detachment, and disaffection thatemerges from surviving ruling-class regimes, many previously dispirited, instead, choose defiance. They engage in subjectivitystruggles by crafting critical consciousness, refusing to be dupes to ideology that represents them as inferior. They undertake socialstruggles demanding policy that dismantles institutional discrimination and that enhances opportunities for learning andachievement. The exploited, as best as they can in regimes of ruling class and white male supremacy, reconstruct their selves and, itis hoped, transform society. The qualitative studies that comprise this edited collection, present a structure-and-agency perspective, broadly defined, that constitutes the best sociological lens through which to understand oppression and resistance. Contributorsinterrogate various aspects of oppression and resistance, from the personal to the institutional, exploring situations in which thestructure of oppression was insurmountable and illustrating cases in which agency was able to transform either individual or groupidentity.

SynopsisIn this new volume of Studies in Symbolic Interaction Carl J. Couch’s (1925-1994) memoir The Romance of Discovery, which has lainunpublished for thirty years, is published in full for the first time. Couch, one of the co-founders of the Society for the Study ofSymbolic Interaction, reflects on his work that influenced a generation of scholars and created a novel perspective known as the newIowa School of Symbolic Interaction. His memoir describes the joy of establishing synergetic connections and the pain of thepolitical struggles associated with the establishment of this school of thought. It offers a frank, proud yet humble, unapologeticdescription of a scholar’s journey, from a successful research to a founder of a school of thought. It provides a readable andvaluable ‘moral tale’ of how research is not only a social act, but charged with political and conflictual dynamics as well.

Edited and set in context by Michael A. Katovich, the volume also includes Couch’s unpublished essay ‘Forms of Social Processes’which sets out a theory of his methodology. Friends and colleagues offer their personal reflections on their relationship with Couch, and the volume concludes with a unique selected bibliography on new Iowa School works.
