4-H Enrollment 2016-2017
The 2016-2017 4-H year has begun. Families can
start re-enrolling or enrolling kids at this time.
To enroll DO NOT use an outdated version of
Internet Explorer. The older versions do not
support 4hOnline due to security issues that
could arise. Always use an updated web browser
like Firefox or Chrome.
To get started go to the 4hOnline web address
https://ia.4honline.com (bookmark this page)
If you can’t remember your password, reset the
password yourself and select “I forgot my
password” and it will then send a new
password to your email account associated with
your 4hOnline account.
If you logged in before select “I have a Profile”.
Enter family email and password.
Click “edit” next to the name (under Member/
Volunteer list).
Click “Enroll for 2016-2017” for the 4-H member
being re-enrolled (bottom of page).
Verify or edit personal information. Don’t forget
to add your email and cell number. Double check
that all information is correct and updated.
Update Emergency Contact (someone other
than yourself in case you can’t be reached).
Update additional information and health form.
Add the projects that you are interested in and
number of years you’ve participated.
When finished, select “Submit Enrollment”.
Repeat these same steps if you have more than
one child.
Help sheets can be found at http://
www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/4honline-
information-families-and-leaders
NEW Any youth in 4th-12th grade who are in
their 1st year of 4-H can join for free. After the
1st year members will pay an enrollment fee.
Enrollment discount deadline. Enroll by
December 31st, $20 per kid. After December
31st fees are $30 per kid (4th-12th). The
discount is made possible by the Buchanan
County Extension Council.
Once again Extension will pay for a pizza party to
the club who has the highest increase in their club
enrollment by May 15.
If anyone is looking for ways on how to promote
or need marketing tools, contact the office and we
would be happy to share those items to help get
the word about 4-H out there in the communities
and increase membership.
FFA members must use the enrollment forms
found on the Extension website at
www.extension.iastate.edu/buchanan/4h and on
the right-hand side the form will be there. These
were to be turned in by November 15 to the
Extension office, but will still be accepted by May
15.
Financial Assistance Program Fee
Those needing 4-H enrollment financial assistance
are eligible to apply. Members must be registered as
individual members or members of 4-H clubs. A
volunteer, teacher, or parent may submit the
application.
Participants should ideally pay some portion of their
membership fee. Those who do pay a portion of the
cost are more likely to stay involved. Clubs may help
provide assistance too.
The Iowa 4-H Foundation has a limited amount of
money from donors for financial assistance. Requests
for member fee assistance may be submitted at any
time. However, funding is limited and timeliness is
important.
A brief statement of need by Extension, 4-H leader,
or parent must explain the financial situation of the
family and other pertinent information is required as
part of the application. Complete one online
application or paper application for each family or
group home with an applicant/applicants.
Go to https://www.iowa4hfoundation.org/ and look for
Funding Opportunities on the top of the page.
There you will find the Iowa 4-H Program Fee
application.

Recruitment Challenge 2016-2017
The challenge has changed a little bit. All Clover Kid
clubs will be separated in the enrollment count from
the traditional 4-H club. Independent members are
not counted since it is not a group/club, but will be
included in the enrollment numbers. All clubs have
an opportunity to receive a pizza party.

4-H Recruitment Report Form—NEW
This is an opportunity for all youth in their clubs to
help recruit members while still having fun doing it!
This is a program to help increase 4-H membership
and help keep track of activities and events that
clubs do throughout the year. Every event or activity
that was recorded on a report form and turned into
the Extension office will be awarded points. Clubs
who participate will receive a prize for reaching a
certain amount of points. For example how it works:
Jane brings a friend to a club meeting and the club
receives 5 points. If Jane’s brother who is in 4-H
brings a friend to the meeting he earns the club an
additional 5 points. Points are determined as follows:
Emerald (200 pts) - $100 gift card
Gold (150 pts) - $75 gift card
Silver (100 pts) - $50 gift card
Bronze (50 pts) - $25 gift card
Report Form Directions:
Activities can be done as an individual or with a
group
After activity/project is completed, youth/leader
must fill out activity sheet and submit to
Extension office within 1 month
Each activity is worth points that accumulate for
yearly rewards
Points are accumulated from September 1st to
August 31 and points do not roll over year to
year
Report must be signed by club leader and be
approved by either/both Executive Director and
CYC
Must complete a variety of activities
Maximum of 200 points per year, may exceed
Forms can be found online at
www.extension.iastate.edu/buchanan/4h right-
hand side of the page titled 4-H Recruitment Activity
Report Form. These can either be printed and hand
written or a fillable document can be used. So far the
Wapsi Warriors are in the lead with 46 points and
Earth, Too with 5. Hope to see more clubs
participate!
Youth County Council Update
Thank you to everyone who helped contribute items
for the YCC holiday service project. All items were
appreciated! The group had fun putting the snowman
soup packages together and making five tied
blankets for Project Linus.
The group also sold locally sourced popcorn to raise
money for the new 4-H Building. Thank you again to
everyone who bought popcorn! Popcorn will be in the
second week of December and the Extension office
will call those who made purchases. Our next YCC
meeting will be held January 22.

Pre-Fair Beef Weigh-In
The county and state fair beef
pre-fair weigh-in is December 17
at the Winthrop Vet clinic from
8:00 am-11:00 am. Contact the
Extension office in advance if planning to do state
fair or Ak-Sar-Ben.
NEW RULE—All breeding beef must be identified by
a 4-H tag and/or calfhood vaccination tag. Must
attend pre-fair weigh-in or if unable to attend contact
the beef superintendent Adam at 319-939-7975.
County tags are $3 a piece. State fair tags and
retinal images will be $8/animal. Ak-Sar-Ben fees
are $8/animal. For more details on Ak-Sar-Ben go
to www.aksarbenstockshow.com/.
If you are an FFA member and plan to show at
state fair through FFA talk to your advisor. The
advisor MUST be present and have the items that
you will need.
Everyone MUST be enrolled beforehand so that
Extension can input the data into 4hOnline and
have families approve the information.
When going through the weigh-in line, make
sure to have someone inside the building to let
Alexia and/or volunteer know who’s animal is
who’s and be ready to know if the animal is
crossbred or registered, breeding/market. We
must know at that time. Registration papers are
not needed until June 15. If by that time we
don’t have those papers, the animal will be
crossbred.
Also, if you decide to switch from market to a
breeding animal between now and the fair you may
do so. You cannot change from breeding to
market.
County of Local Origin, this form must be
completed and turned in at the pre-fair weigh-in.
Make sure to do this beforehand. If you do not, the
forms will be available the day of weigh-in. Forms
are found at the Buchanan County Extension
website www.extension.iastate.edu/buchanan/4h or
stop by the office to pick one up.
Goat & Sheep Clinic
The sheep and goat committees would like
to invite all 4-H and FFA members to
attend an informational clinic on
December 28 at Heartland Acres theater room
beginning at 6:00 pm. Parents and mentors are
welcome to attend. Topics for the evening include:
Refresher course over lambing and kidding
techniques
Criteria on how to select a fair animal (qualities,
traits)
Feeding basics
Information about Novice Sheep project
Learn about the different classes and divisions to
participate in at the county fair
If anyone would like to participate,
contact the Extension office at
319-334-7161 to RSVP ahead of
time.
For more information about the sheep and goat
project area go to
www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/livestock. Tip
sheets and other helpful documents can be found on
this page by selecting which animal you have
interest in.
Project Help Tip Sheets
The Iowa State 4-H webpage has several items to
help members succeed in their projects. It includes
project tip sheets that dig deeper into the different
project areas. These tip or “hot” sheets are great at
stepping up communication, citizenship, and
leadership skills. Not only does it boost those areas,
but it also has ideas on what members can do for
exhibits as well as resources to use in the process.
The link is http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/
exhibit-tip-sheets. There it breaks everything down
into the project areas. Each month Extension will
include a hot sheet. This month we’ve included
Clothing and Fashion. We want to see members try
different project areas and not be afraid to try
something new.

Buchanan County Livestock Volunteers
Know anyone in the community looking for a fun
learning experience that involves working with
youth?! Buchanan County has open volunteer
positions for livestock committees: beef, cat/pet,
dairy, dairy goat, dog, horse, meat goat, poultry,
rabbit, sheep, and swine.
To become a volunteer please fill out an
application that is found on the Buchanan County
ISU Extension webpage
www.extension.iastate.edu/edu/buchanan/news/
become-volunteer-0. Complete the application and
return it to the Extension office. Once submitted,
staff will review and then set-up an interview/
meeting to discuss what the position and role
entails. For more questions call 319-334-7161 or
email [email protected].
Buchanan County Fair 2017 Schedule
The Buchanan County Fair Board decided on the
dates for the fair, July 5-9. The schedule has been
revised and changed due to how the days fall in
the week. We realize that this may be challenging
for families, but we have to work with what we
have and go with the flow. To develop a new
schedule a committee was formed of Extension
staff, Extension council, 4-H leaders, YCC, YAC,
Fair Board, and volunteers. After long discussions
we finally came to a consensus.
This year will be different and things are always
changing! We hope everyone can keep an open-
mind and start thinking ahead about how to go
forward. There are many changes in the check-in
and weigh-in times. Most of the livestock will be
entering the grounds in the morning, which may
cause the grounds to be a little chaotic. Everyone
must be patient. If you are in a time crunch, ask
for help or assistance.
Remember this organization is about our youth
and setting good examples as positive role
models.
(Buchanan County Fair Schedule Continued)
When looking at the schedule, the first part is
similar to last year with the horse and dog shows,
set-up, and static exhibit judging. After the holiday
we jump right into the check-ins and weigh-ins. As
mentioned before, it will be crazy on the grounds
but we all need to stay calm. Some families show
more than one specie, if the family brainstorms a
plan beforehand it will help make the process flow
smoother.
Some shows have been moved to different days
and times. Please make note of that so that your
family is prepared ahead of time. The cat/pet,
poultry, and rabbit shows will be held in the tent
instead of the show ring.
Those who participate in Fair Boards Junior Fun
Day, the shows are all moved to the final day of
fair. It will begin after the Master Showmanship
show. Once it is 5:00 pm, livestock and static
exhibits may leave the grounds.
Please do not feel overwhelmed by this. Start
planning ahead now to figure out how you and your
family can make this work. We know you can do it!
Again, don’t feel afraid to ask for help.

FSQA—Mandatory Training & Testing
Dates for the FSQA sessions at Hawkeye
Community College are still to be determined. They
will become available in the next Newsletter. FSQA,
Food Safety Quality Assurance, is a certification for
those that plan to show these animals in 2017:
market and breeding beef, swine, sheep, dairy cattle,
dairy goats, meat goats, rabbit, and poultry. At these
hands on trainings members learn about record
keeping, vet and drug usage in project livestock,
healthy production practices, care and handling, feed
and feed additives, biosecurity, and ethics.
Grades 4-6—Must attend a training each year
Grades 7-9—Must attend a training each year OR
take intermediate test
Grades 10-12—Must attend a training each year OR
take senior test
MORE DETAILS TO COME! Members will not be
able to test out after 2017. A new program is
being installed through the state and will be
called YQCA. Similar to FSQA but training is all
online.
Citizenship Washington Focus Trip
Citizenship Washington Focus has been scheduled
and will be June 16-24, 2017. Price will remain at
$1570 per delegate this year. Citizenship
Washington Focus (CWF) is a 4-H leadership
program for high school youth (grades 9-12). Every
summer teens from across the country gather at the
National 4-H Conference Center, near Washington,
D.C., to learn what it means to be a strong leader in
their community, country, and world. For more
information go to www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/
cwf.Objectives for the program are:
Strengthen communication, leadership, and other
citizenship skills on a national level.
Understand the importance of civic and social
responsibilities as they relate to the development
of better citizens and leaders.
Exchange ideas, practice respect, and form
friendships with other youth from diverse
backgrounds.
These objectives are met through pre-trip
education, speakers, workshops, daily excursions
to view National sites, day at the Capitol with
elected officials, and a delegate designed and
implemented action plan.
4-H Volunteer Training –
“Youth Engagement Strengthens 4-H”
Join 4-H leaders from across Buchanan County in
an interactive, hands on training that will help
volunteers engage youth in intentional, meaningful
ways. By creating opportunities for youth to make
decisions, take on responsibilities, and contribute
to improving outcomes for themselves and others,
we are providing opportunities for youth to build
mastery in decision making skills as well as
reinforce their work towards independence.
During this training, 4-H leaders will gain an
understanding of the importance of youth
involvement, identify strategies that support
positive youth adult partnerships and gather
resources to aid in engaging youth in core
principles of positive youth development. In
addition, volunteers will practice how to empower
youth of all ages to make 4-H more engaging. This
training is part of the statewide leader training and
will be held on January 19, 2017 from 6:30 pm to
8:30 pm at Heartland Acres Great Spaces.
A benefit of participating in the face-to-face
volunteer training is the interaction and sharing
with other volunteers. If you are not able to attend
the training, contact the Extension office to learn
more about participating through other training
options.
Please register by contacting the Buchanan
County Extension office by January 18.
