FOREWORD

The booklet Growth of Electricity Sector in India published annually by Central Electricity Authority in paral fulll-ment of its obligaon under the Electricity Act, 2003. It provides glimpses of growth of the Indian Power Sector over the years

and contains the relevant informaon and stascs in the form of graphs, pie-charts, maps and tables.

The input data for this compilaon has been provided by various ulies and non -ulies. The vital informaon and

data contained in this handy booklet will be of immense interest to the public in general and stakeholders in parcular. The im -portant stascs like per capita electricity consumpon, percentage share of dierent categories of consumpon, transmissionand distribuon losses, etc., have been compared with internaonal data with respect to some of the developed and develop -ing naons. I hope this booklet will prove to be helpful to all those who are associated in the rapid and sustained developmentof the Indian Electricity Sector.

PREFACE

The Power Sector in India has made rapid strides during the last six decades in the eld of generaon, transmission,distribuon and ulizaon of electricity. The installed generang capacity in the country in 1947 was meagre 1362 MW whichcatered to power requirements of urban centres and adjoining areas with electricaon of around 1500 Villages. The powergenerang capacity in the country has since grown manifold to 173626 MW at the end of March 2011. Village electricaoncovers 537947 villages represenng 90.6% of the total villages in the country and pump sets energisaon accounts for 85.5%of the potenal. The Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyukaran Yojana, aimed at providing access to electricity to all the villages in ame bound manner is under implementaon. The programmes have to been introduced to improve the energy conservaonand reducon in the AT & C losses. CEA has made signicant contribuon in the development of power sector in various specicareas such as introducon of new technologies, generaon and transmission planning , design and engineering of projects,techno-economic appraisal of the projects, monitoring the performance of the exisng schemes in operaon, construcon,etc.

The booklet on Growth of the Electricity in India from 1947 to 2011 has been brought out by Data Management & LoadForecasng (DMLF) Division of CEA. It contains vital stascs on the growth of installed generang capacity, electrical energygeneraon, transmission and distribuon network paern of electricity consumpon etc. The informaon on the growth hasbeen presented in the form of graphs, maps, tables and pie-charts. The state-wise generang capacity has been presented onmap as well. The details like sector wise growth of Generaon Capacity, Energy Generaon & Trend of category-wise consump-on have been compiled and included in this publicaon.

It is hoped that the booklet would provide useful informaon to all the stakeholders.
