GRUNDFOS LOOKING AHEAD
Our Innovation Intent is to put sustainability first, be there for a growing world and pioneer new technologies. Every major concept that we launch over the next 20-30 years should meet all three of the challenges embraced by our Innovation Intent.

GRUNDFOS BIOBOOSTER
Cleaner water – Greener environment
Once upon a time..
The BioBooster project has been 10 years in the making..
Based on Biofilm theory a very efficient biological wastewater treatment was invented and constructed in reactors
Named PBR (Pressurised Biofilm Reactor) the technology is capable of reducing the biological load in process wastewater
Towards a containerised solution
PBR reference plants
Cleaner water - greener environment - require MBR-• The Grundfos BioBooster PBR - biological pre-
treatment with a removal rate of 80% was not enough
• The Grundfos BioBooster MBR (Membrane Bioreactor) allows for full treatment resulting in supreme water quality:
– allowing for direct discharge to receiving waters
– water reuse, in those areas where lack of water is a concern.
• The reactor, similarly to its predecessor PBR, is also placed in containers to ensure easy scalability.
Visionary leadership sets new targets
Sustainable use of water
•The odourless plant is located in urban clusters between 0.1 – 1.5 MGD
•WW is treated at the point source of pollution and reused
•Natural growth of industry requires a slight adjustment in treatment capacity
•Impact on surface waters is minimised
•Reduction in need for heavy investments in infrastructure
•A sustainable and decentralised solution that minimises uncertainty of funding and planning for extra capacity
Outcome: the local community is self-sustained
The ideal WWTP scenario
Two reactors, two patented treatment technologies
•Biological / mechanical Pre-treatment with PBR technology
•Full-treatment and water reuse with MBR technology
• Rotating disc system• 2100 discs• 2025 ft² biofilm
surface• Enclosed reactor• 18 ft long• Modular system
PBR construction
Odour free system
Flexibility of plant capacity
Constant high biofilm activity
Self-cleaning system– no CIP required
BENEFITS
• Two-layer rasping principle
• Uniform biofilm layer• Oxygen access to all
microorganisms
Optimised biological process
BENEFIT
Optimised biofilm process
• Enclosed reactor• Modular system• Fixed ceramic discs
with UF filtration• Rotating cross flow
impellers
MBR construction
Flexibility of plant capacity
Odour free system
Robust and durable design
High-quality effluent
Optimal flux
BENEFITS
Advantages
• Industrialised product
• Faster delivery time
• Lower investment in infrastructure
• Can be stacked on top of each other where footprint is limited
• Modular and easy to expand treatment capacity
• Easy relocation or resale thus protecting the invested capital
• Odourless and enclosed; can be therefore located inside urban areas
From vision..
Generic illustration based on 0.5 MGD
The plant consists of:
•1 Control container•1Pre treatment container•1 Supply/pump container•2 MBR containers (32 MBR reactors)•2 Denitrification containers•Sludge storage tank
…to realisation…
