GS0J99M ENGLISH COMMUNICATIVE SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT – I, 2013 Class - X Time allowed : 3 hours Maximum Marks: 80 General Instructions : (i) The question paper is divided into four sections. (iv) All questions of that particular section must be attempted in the correct order. SECTION – A (Reading) 1 Returning home Vishnu had his food and retired for the day. He decided that he would write a long letter to his father and send it through the escort who was to go back to Pataliputra to inform his father of their safe arrival at Kusumpur. Despite the weariness and the cosy comfort of the bed in that intense cold, Vishnu couldn‟t sleep well. But unmindful of any tension, his mother and the escort slept well. They slept so soundly that they were not aware of the arrival of a messanger on horse very late in the night. Vishnu was the first to get up. He beckoned to the horse rider who came up to him and said: “Sire, I have been sent by Shree Katyayan Ji. I have brought a letter for you.” “But how could he know that we are here ? Did he meet my father ?” “I don‟t know Sire. You might find all your answers in the letter.” Vishnu quickly opened the bulletin and took out the letter. It was addressed to him. The letter gave no details about his father except that “he was slightly hurt at the palace demonstrations. You must come back to Pataliputra quickly and clandestinely after making proper arrangements for your mother‟s stay at Kusumpur. Meet the nayak (the local head) of Kusumpur. He would provide all the security needed for your mother. The times are very grim and you ought not take any risk. recognize his handwriting. Katyayan was his father‟s favorite disciple about a decade ago, and was an expert in grammar and logic. Often his father would ask him to go to Katyayan to brush up his grammar lessons. He could recognize the handwriting. But the letter posed more questions than it answered. That his father was “Slightly hurt at the palace demonstration“ and that he was wanted urgently in Pataliputra really worried him. Vishnu could make out that all was not well at Pataliputra. Hearing the commotion, by then, his mother had also come to the outer room. But Vishnu was intelligent enough to quell his mother‟s queries by saying that his father was well. He told her nothing about his going back to Pataliputra soon. But why is Katyayan Ji insisting my reaching Pataliputra so secretly. Have I also been outlawed by the state ? Is my father only hurt or…‟ Vishnu couldn‟t think further. He decided to pass the night and meet the nayak in the morning. „Maybe, he may have more information.‟ He knew that the nayak was a trusted man of katyayan, whom he had met earlier.
