GSBARC Compass-August 2006 Volume 34, Issue 8 Page 1 President's Message It’s almost the end of August-where has the summer gone? Hopefully many of our club members have had the opportunity to take a well-deserved vacation. Our club activities are hardly finished. We are still looking forward to the Club Picnic on the east lawn of Town Hall on Saturday, August 26 th , and starting on September 9 th , our Open House weekly get-together will resume. We just finished up two successful events; one at the Fire Island Lighthouse this past weekend, and the Great South Bay Swim. Those members that participated in the Great South Bay Swim witnessed a very interesting event; with over 70 swimmers & kayaks in the water, there was enough action for all involved. A big thank you to all of the members who supported the club's events this summer. The Air Power Museum special event, Field Day, the Fire Island Lighthouse special event, and the Great South Bay Swim were all tremendously successful. Remember, the 2007 versions of these events may seem far away now, but before long, it will be time to do it all over again. Please join us at the picnic this Saturday, and also at the General Meeting on August 31. Shack of the Month (back by popular demand)

This month: N2ZN

My shack has been through a few changes over the years, but I have finally come up with a configuration thatis probably as good as I'm going to get it for now. The antenna “system” is not pictured here, but it consists of wireantennas for 80, 40, and 20 meters. The 80 meter inverted vee has its apex at 45 feet, while the 20 meter invertedvee is positioned about 10 feet lower than that. The 40 meter dipole is at about 25 feet-not optimal, but it works. The antennas are loaded through the tuner for all of the other bands. Currently, the 80 and 40 meter antennas runinto the antenna tuner, while the 20 meter antenna runs directly into the radio. Antenna port 1 on the rig takes thetuner input, while the 20 meter antenna goes to antenna port 2. They are switchable from the front of the radio. Theantennas are all homebrew, consisting of Hope Depot wire, W2AU baluns, and RG58 and RG8X coax.

Earlier this year, I replaced my aging Kenwood TS-940SAT with the Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark V Field that isseen above. This is the heart of the station. From this rig, I am active on all bands and modes from 80-10 meters. The station is set up with the laptop computer on the shelf above the rig. This serves two purposes-the computerscreen is right in front of my face, and the computer body is out of the way, but still accessible. The keyboard andmouse in front of the rig allow me to control everything (including the radio, sometimes), and nothing in the station(tuner controls, paddles, microphone) is ever out of arm's reach. Not pictured is the microphone for the rig, but youcan see the box for it under the desk. The paddles are made by Begali (the Simplex model) and there is a BuxcommRascal digital mode interface that sits to the left of the rig, but can't really be seen in this picture. Atop the rig is theUTC clock and DX Gong. The antenna tuner is made by MFJ, and surprisingly, I haven't smoked it yet. Atop the tuneris another ham. The rig is computer controlled, and if you look at the rig's display and then the computer screen inthis picture, you'll see they say the same thing. I use Ham Radio Deluxe occasionally to control the rig. This is a nice

feature-you can control all of the rig's functions from the computer keyboard, but I still haven't found a real practicaluse for this. It's a nice trick, though. I use MMTTY, WinPSK, and MultiPSK for digital modes and MMSSTV for SSTV.

My main logging program is Logger32. This program also interfaces with the rig and is a great all-aroundprogram that keeps track of DXCC stats, has built in rig control, CW send, and cluster interface. For contesting, I useN1MM Logger, which has tons upon tons of neat stuff built into it. Yes, I do send CW via a computer during contests-the secret's out. All other times, though, I am sending au natural. Other computer programs I use now and againare BV7, CQPWin, CT, Grayline, IZ8BLY Hellschreiber, Morse Runner, Morse Cat, RufzXP, VE7CC Cluster, andW6ELProp.

I tend to operate in a lot of contests, whether they are big or small, and having the computer screen right infront of me is a big plus. I used to have the computer off to the side on a small table, and it would drive me nutsswinging back band forth in my seat to go from the rig to the computer, rig, computer, etc. Not to mention it wasvery fatiguing to sit for any length of time. Having everything in front of me and all the station controls within arm'sreach makes everything so much easier. I wonder why I didn't do this earlier, but I guess we all have to figure thesethings out at our own pace.

A good amount of DXing also takes place from this seat, and since I got back on the air in late 2003, I haveworked 225 DXCC entities overall. I have also worked a DXCC's worth on CW, SSB, digital, and several bands. Theonly thing keeping me from 5BDXCC right now is a few more entities on 80, and about 55 on 10 meters. Too bad I'llhave to wait a few years to finish the 10 meter totals. In addition to that, I have earned WAC and WAS in severaldifferent forms. I have also earned the IOTA, WAZ, and USACA awards in name only-just waiting for the cards now.I've also picked up a few contest certificates; nothing major, but a few.

The most important part of a setup is the antenna system-I am hoping to upgrade to something better thanwires shortly; not so much for DXing, but for contesting (although it won't hurt all around). So look for my nextupdate once that happens. 73 and CU on the bands!

Fire is l a n d l i g h t h o u s e pi c t u r e s

Thanks to K2LI, N2MIG, KA2CAQ, and KA2RGI for the photos.

QSL Card of the Month

This card is from the CEØZ DXpedition that took place in January 2006. This expedition was kind of a warmup for some of the members of the 3YØX expedition, as they were in Chile at the time, and decided to hop on this tripto get in some action. Juan Fernandez id located off the coast of Chile, and counts as a separate DXCC country due toits distance from the mainland. The island is inhabited, and sometimes has residents that are hams. Most recently,CEØZIS had been active on the bands, but this expedition put Juan Fernandez on the air in a big way. As can be readon the QSL card above, the island gets its name from the 'Robinson Crusoe' novel, as this island is where the shipgets wrecked. The island is even called “Robinson Crusoe Island” on some charts, and this is the island's claim tofame. Chile has several neat DXCC entities tied to it- Easter Island (CE0Y), San Felix (CEØX) and Juan Fernandez(CEØZ). Easter Island is of course the home of the famous stone heads. The rarest of the three is San Felix, with noresident hams and few expeditions. QSL cards for this (2006) CEØZ expedition go to N2OO. QSL carefully-the callCEØZ has been used in the past by other DXpeditions, and those are not managed by N2OO, so check your routes.
