Influenza
Influenza (the flu) contagious respiratory disease caused by influenza viruses.
Affect the respiratory track (nose, throat and lungs).
Symptoms : fever, headache, malaise, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and body aches.
10% to 20% of the population is infected with influenza virus each year

Influenza A Virus
Is subdivide into two distinct large surface glycoprotein's antigens.
H- Haemagglutinin which initiates infection and attachment of virus to the susceptible cell
N- Neuraminidase which is responsible for release of virus from the infected cell
Mutations in the antigenic structure of the influenza virus have resulted in a number of different influenza subtypes and strains (antigenic drift)
H Type (1-15) and N Type (1-9)
Only H1, H2 and H3 and N1, N2 are found in humans.
Example: H1N1,H2N2,H3N2 etc.

Types of Influenza Vaccines
Inactivated Vaccine (Killed)
• These type of vaccine are produced by killing the virus with chemicals, heat or radiation.
• There are three types of inactivated vaccine whole virus, split virus and subunit vaccine.
• They are generally injected (intramuscular).
Live Attenuated Vaccine
• The vaccine contain a version of weakened strain of virus.
• They are given intranasal.
