JusT FuNLyrIcsGuinea pigs in glasses, pickles and molasses
Atmospheric gases
Making rainbows ‘round the sun
Foibles and blunders, overs and unders
No need to wonder, it’s – Just Fun
Ice cream cones in slippers,
Whales with orange flippers
Bananas with zippers
Watching water colors run
Clear to the rear for, stand up and cheer for
That’s what we’re here for – Just Fun
No rhyme or reason to our madness,
Just tons of joyous goofy gladness
Orangutans in nightgowns
Green eggs and ham with hash browns
Baseball with touchdowns
Cotton candy on a bun
Nothing that’s serious, half past delirious
If you should query us – Just Fun
aBoUt the soNGMany children have limited and predictable associations to words, events and objects. If you say happy, they say sad, etc. In promoting creativity, we want to encourage the fluency of associations, the sheer number of associations to words and objects; as well as the originality of associations. This song focuses on originality as it asks children to hold in their mind’s eye “goofy” images such as cotton candy on a bun. The desired experience is the sheer fun of thinking new and wild thoughts.
With this song we want children to experience imagination as a fun toy. At the same time it allows children to reinforce their “working memory”. Working memory is the ability to actively hold information in the mind needed to do complex tasks such as reasoning, comprehension and learning.
Now it’s time for funny noises
(funny noises ensue) – Just Fun
No rhyme or reason to our madness,
Just tons of joyous goofy gladness
Cumber buns with crimples
Golf balls without dimples
Piglets with pimples
Playing ping pong one by one
All of the rest here, who needs a jester?
When we’re at our best we’re – Just Fun
Put it to the test it’s – Just Fun
Be our special guest for – Just Fun
settING UP the soNGMuch of the words in this song are beyond preschoolers’ vocabularies, but the two main words are the focus of the song, “Just Fun.” The rest of the words can be used as a springboard to asking questions and learning new words but the focus of the words are just silly. Preschoolers are in a stage of vocabulary explosion with a huge amount of new words added each day. We can use this song to introduce new words in a silly way and just have fun with it. (Most Growing Sound songs are designed to be sung word for word but this one is simply just fun; it’s not important that they learn these words but understand that words can be used for fun.)

• Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown
teacher /PareNt reFLectIoNs“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
Keep a journal and write down all the funny things your children say and do.
PartNerING WIth FaMILIesShare with parents that we are enhancing imagination in our classroom by creatively combining things that are not usually paired together. Give examples from the lyrics. Suggest that they extend these activities from the following:
• Pairing things you see on the ride home that don’t usually go together
• Visualizing a “wacky” dinner menu like chicken and marshmallows and ice-cream and mustard
• Combine different animal parts to create a new far-out species
assocIateD actIvItIesThis song with its creative pairing of images can be used within any curriculum as a “learning to learn” skill. It can help children enhance memory using unusually paired images as mnemonic devices.
• After listening to the song, have children suggest other funny pairings of images.
• In the art area, create your own “Just Fun” book. Guide the children to pick two items that generally don’t go together.
DaNce aND MoveMeNt tIPs• Turn your classroom into a circus tent complete
with tightrope walkers (tiptoeing across a tape line or yarn on the floor), jugglers (tossing and catching scarves or a bean bag), jumping tigers (hold up a hula hoop and have children jump through), and elephants on parade (lead children slowly through the classroom with arms swinging low like an elephant trunk).
