shire’s only offshore Islands 6,000 years ago. Hundreds of European fishermen split, salted, and dried valuable Atlantic cod here from the 1620s. King Haley ruled a survivalist kingdom here before Thomas Laighton struck tourist gold when his family took over the region’s first hotel on Smut-tynose. Laighton’s daughter Celia Thaxter spun poetic tales of ghosts and pirates. J. Dennis Robinson, a longtime Smutty-nose steward, explores the truth behind the romantic legends of Gosport Harbor in this colorful show-and-tell presentation.

Robinson has published over 1,000 articles on New Hampshire history and cul-ture. His books for young read-ers include biographies of Jesse James and Lord Baltimore. His hardcover histories of Strawbery Banke Museum and historic Wentworth by the Sea Hotel both received honors from the Ameri-can Association for State and Local History. Robinson is also editor of SeacoastNH.com, a Web site about NH history and culture that attracts thousands of visitors daily. His lectures are designed to make history both entertaining and accessible to all audiences.

Light refreshments will be available and reservations are not needed. Tickets are $24. For more details, call 603-436-6660 or visit www.pontine.org.

Pearl. ‘Comedy’ fans and come-dians themselves have placed Tony in a very small and im-pressive group at the top of the ladder.

“He’s the type of comedian you can see over and over, and if you’ve never seen Tony, you’ll walk out of the show wondering why it took you so long.”

Rodrigues is appearing at the Pearl prior to heading for a week long engagement at Catch a Rising Star, at the Silver Legacy Resort in Reno, Nev. He is a regular at the major clubs in and around New York City.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance through the Pearl website at www.ports-mouthpearl.com or $15 cash the night of the show if not sold out.

On April 22, we celebrate Earth Day —

a day devoted to education and action on environmen-tal issues. As a citizen of the world, you may have a keen interest in protecting your physical surroundings. And as someone trying to reach long-term financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you’re probably also interested in im-proving your investment envi-ronment.

So here are a few suggestions: • Respond to environmen-

tal factors. Over the past few years, we’ve had a favorable investment climate, marked by low inflation, low interest rates and generally strong corporate profits. And investors who have taken advantage of this positive environment have, for the most part, been rewarded. But things can change, so it’s always a good idea to under-stand the current investment environment, as it may affect

your investment choices. For ex-ample, if it seems likely that long-term interest rates are going to rise significantly, you might need to review your long-term bond holdings, as their price would be negatively affected by a rise in rates.

• Nurture your investments. One area of environmentalism in-volves planting seeds or saplings and nurturing them to maturity. You can do the same thing with investments — and a good way to nurture them is to give them time to grow in all investment climates. But how long should you hold these investments? You might heed the advice of Warren Buffett, one of the world’s most famous investors, who says this about his investment company: “Our favorite holding period is forever.” It takes patience to follow the buy-and-hold strategy favored by Mr. Buffett — and it also requires the discipline nec-essary to keep investing through the inevitable downturns you

will encounter. But over the long term, your perseverance may well be rewarded.

• Avoid “toxic” investment strategies. Unfortunately, many human activities are bad for the environment. Similarly, some investment strategies are “toxic” for your prospects of success. Consider the pursuit of “hot” stocks. They sound inviting, but, by the time you hear about them, they may have lost their sizzle — and in any case, they might not be right for your needs. Here’s another “poisonous” investment strategy: trying to “time” the market. If you’re always jump-ing in and out of the market, looking for “low” points to buy and “high” points to sell, you’ll probably be wrong most of the time — because nobody can ac-curately predict highs and lows. Even more importantly, you may find yourself out of the market during the beginning of a rally, which is when the biggest gains tend to occur.

• Diversify your “species” of investments. Drawing in-spiration from Earth Day, the United Nations has designated 2011–2020 as the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity. And, just as preserving the diversifica-tion of species is important for life on Earth, the diversification of your investment portfolio is es-sential for its health. By owning a variety of investments — stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and so on — you can help protect yourself from downturns that primarily affect just one asset class. (Keep

in mind, though, that while diversification can reduce the effects of volatil-ity on your holdings, it can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss.)

Earth Day happens just once a year — but the lessons of environmentalism can help you, as an investor, for all the days and years ahead.

This article was writ-ten by Edward Jones and sub-mitted by Financial Advisor Joseph Mittica. If you would like to reach Mittica, you can do so by calling 603-964-1947.

The pre-sentation is open to the public free of charge, thanks to funding from the New Hampshire Humanities Council. There is treasure here but not the pirate kind. rivalry takes a “funny” twist Friday, April 18 at 8 p.m. when comedy legend Tony V headlines the ‘New York Boston Comedy Clash’ at the Portsmouth Pearl. Co-headliner, Corey Rodrigues will be making his way up from the Big Apple in this blockbust-er comedy night at the 45 Pearl St. venue.

Tony V is more than a New England legend as he is a nationally known comedian who has appeared in numerous films and television shows. He is one of North America’s best comedians who is a regular in Las Vegas and has performed on Comedy Central, Late Night With Conan O’Brien, A&E’s

Evening at the Improv, MTV, and Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn and more. His television credits include Showtime’s The Brotherhood as well as the CBS series Waterfront, along with Rescue Me, Seinfeld, Boston Common, two seasons of Bob-cat’s Big Show on F/X, and more. His one-man show ‘The Failure Artist’, drew critical ac-claim. He has appeared in the films State and Main, Celtic Pride, Housesitter, One Crazy Summer and Shakes the Clown.

“Tony V is among a very select group of comedians,” said Michael Smith of Laugh Riot Productions, which books comedy fundraisers as well as shows at a number of rooms in New England including the

DOVER-St. Thomas Aquinas High

School Girls Lacrosse program has a new leader this spring. Phil Rowley, formerly the head coach at Central Catholic High School, will be taking over a strong program starting this season. Phil started the pro-gram at Central Catholic in Lawrence, MA in 2007 and has been involved in coaching girls lacrosse since 1994. Phil brings a wealth of knowledge and ex-perience to the program and will be taking over a team that is in very good position to be a contender in Division II this spring. Phil is excited about the opportunity and has started the process of getting to know the girls during the first two weeks of preseason practice.

The St. Thomas Aquinas High School Athletic Depart-ment would also like to recog-nize the efforts of Briand Wade and Bill Williams, the former St. Thomas Aquinas varsity coaches who coached the girls lacrosse program for the last two years. Briand and Bill did an outstanding job of revitaliz-ing the program and setting it up for future success. Both Briand and Bill have been longstand-

ing members of the St. Thomas Aquinas community. Together, the Wade and Williams fami-lies account for seven very suc-cessful academic and athletic daughters who have played in the St. Thomas Aquinas girls la-crosse program. Briand and Bill will continue to be a big part of the St. Thomas Aquinas com-munity going forward. They will continue to be supporters of the school’s established Catholic tradition of academic excellence and comprehensive athletic, arts and extracurricular offerings.

The girls lacrosse team is looking to build off of a strong finish last year. The girls fin-ished 8-7, losing in the quarter-final round to eventual state champion Portsmouth. St. Thomas Aquinas opens up the 2014 schedule on April 14 at Dover starting at 4 p.m.

Located in Dover, NH, St. Thomas Aquinas High School is a coeducational, Catholic high school community where young people are called to be challenged academically, to stretch their hearts spiritually and to embark on a journey to make a difference. For more information, visit us at www.stalux.org or call 603-742-3206.

Changes on the Sideline for the Saints Girls Lacrosse Program of artists and exhibitions,” notes

Ali Goodwin, gallery director and curator. “We are fortunate to offer such a world-class col-lection of art in such a stunning venue, and if last year was any indication of our intention to bring world-class arts and events to the Seacoast, this season

proves to be no exception.”In addition to rotating ex-

hibitions throughout spring, summer and fall, Drift Gallery offers a weekly figure drawing group, art classes and work-shops, special events, a monthly ‘Lunch with the Curator’ series, artist talks and book signings by local, national and international artists.

The exhibit runs through

June 10, and is free and open to the public. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sun-days until June 14.

Please note, the Sagamore Bridge is closed. Drift Gallery is located at the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion Historic Site, just steps from downtown Ports-mouth at 375 Little Harbor Rd. in Portsmouth. (courtesy photo)
