Data Connectivity & Centralization (Terminal Services)The Terminal Services functionality of Windows Server operating systems provides the Windows
operating system experience to users at client computers (desktop PCs) remotely accessing Windows Server across a network.
Terminal Services functionality enables an enterprise to use a single point of installation from which its users accessing Windows Server can remotely run desktop applications, save files, and use network
resources through a hosted graphical user interface as if those applications and other resources were installed locally on their desktops.
The server component of Terminal Services (Terminal Server) listens on TCP port 3389 (termdd.sys). When an RDP client connects to this port, it is tagged with a unique Session ID and associated with a freshly
spawned console session (Session 0, keyboard, mouse and character mode UI only). The login subsystem (winlogon.exe) and the GDI graphics subsystem is then initiated, which handles the job of authenticating the
user and presenting the GUI. These executables are loaded in a new session, rather than the console session.
The users at remote locations can use their mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers and printer to execute the application hosted on the windows 2003 server. As soon a user is connected to the terminal server a session is
created on the server and only the screen image is shown on the local desktop and the mouse and keyboard events are sent to the server. Thus the application is practically running on the server in a secured environment
and only the user interface is transmitted over the internet, using the minimal bandwidth of the connection.
