ANNUAL REPORT

2009-2010

In 1982, a small group of individuals formed the Southern Boosters to garner support for a fledgling football team at Georgia Southern University.

Many years later, that group of faithful charter members has grown to thou-sands of supporters across the country, who proudly provide Georgia Southern athletes with scholarships from both an unrestricted and endowed basis. Now known as the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation, the organiza-tion also benefits the athletic program with the construction of athletic-related facilities, equipment purchases and other goods and services necessary for the operations of the athletic department.

The Eagle Fund, the annual donation campaign of the Georgia Southern Uni-versity Athletic Foundation, utilizes 92% of its received gifts directly for student aid. This monetary support keeps alive our vision of “Rings and Diplomas,” granting every student-athlete at Georgia Southern the opportunity to pursue his or her goal of a college education and a championship ring.

The Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation is

an independent, non-profit organization which raises money for

Georgia Southern University student-athlete scholarships and

priority needs of the athletics department as approved by its

board of directors.

From the Board Chair

Almost 29 years ago, I had the opportunity to be involved with the newly-formed athletics fund-raising organization, Southern Boosters, that was just getting off the ground at Georgia Southern. I was hired as secretary in a two-person office alongside Executive Director Ken Winstead.

It was the early Erk Russell years, and little did we know that we were headed for such unprecedented events in the years to come. The dedicated volunteers and generous donors were rewarded with teams that could play at a championship level, winning not only their games but the hearts and minds of all who supported them. Throughout the years our mission remained simple. We were committed to assisting talented young athletes with scholarships to play sports at a collegiate level and receive an education. That early organization has evolved into the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation in recognition of the expanded interests in the Eagle community. Yet, our early mission continues today with our vision of “rings and diplomas” — a championship season and a college education for student-athletes in all 15 NCAA sanctioned sports at Georgia Southern. We are very proud of you, our loyal donors, who continue to believe in our mission. It is with your generosity that we can all make a life-changing difference for our talented student-athletes and provide the resources for success in athletic competition. It is their passion and hard work, guided by their coaches and professors, with which our financial contributions are aligned. We can give them the futures of which they dream — futures that contain the skills and education necessary to succeed in life. Let’s continue to work together for them.

From the President

The close of the 2010 calendar year left us with memories of some remarkable events. We marveled at the success of a well-coached and determined football team that reminded folks of Eagle football in the 80’s. The team’s accomplishments rallied the same level of fan enthusiasm remembered by many, and their magic continues to give us something

special to talk about. We also looked on with pride as our Eagle volleyball team won the Southern Conference Volleyball Championship, the third time in the history of the school. Every day, our 400 Eagle athletes, led by their talented coaches and teachers, strive to be winners on both the field and in the classroom — training and practicing to make their championship runs while keeping rigorous academic schedules. We are here to assist them in accomplishing their dreams. It is our mission to provide the opportunity for a championship ring and a college diploma for each one of our promising and gifted student-athletes. During the past few years, providing these opportunities has been tested by a world-wide economic challenge that came knocking on individual doors. Yet even with the tough financial climate, the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation was able to carry on by managing a few years of diminished donations with a sharp eye on controlling expenses. By FY10 year-end, our cash balances were good and our savings are secure. We have weathered the storm. Overall, the fiscal year was a good one and showed historical growth. We rose to the challenge of giving the athletic department additional needed dollars as they watched their budget diminish from a state-wide reduction. Every dollar we gave athletics for scholarships freed budgeted funds to reinvest in the program for other needs. And that needed scholarship assistance has become our major goal to meet — supplying the revenue for all athletic scholarships thus freeing the athletic department’s budget for operations. This spring, we will launch our annual Eagle Fund drive focused on the athletic department’s immediate operational needs requiring us to raise an additional $350,000 in annual funds this year. Our Eagle Fund goal is $1.1 million. It’s a goal that we know is achievable through the generosity of our Eagle community. Later this year, we will be embarking on a much-needed capital campaign for new construction and facilities improvements. From our new donors to our long-standing leadership supporters, we can come together for success. Thank you for your generous support.

Giving Categories

Unrestricted GiftsContributions to the Eagle Fund are deposited into an unrestricted fund and used to help fulfill the scholarship needs of our student-athletes and the operational requirements of Georgia Southern’s athletic department. Donor benefits are based on unrestricted gifts to the annual campaign.

Restricted Gifts Restricted gifts given for a specific purpose may be permanently restricted for endowment gifts or temporarily restricted for specific projects.

Named Scholarships (Endowments)Endowing a scholarship is a way for donors to leave their legacy at Georgia Southern University. Unlike an annual gift, the corpus of the endowment gift remains in perpetuity. The interest income is used to benefit current and future student-athletes.

Planned GiftsDonors who include the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation in their estate plans become members of our Band of Eagles. Planned gifts may include bequests or beneficiary designations of insurance, for example. Other methods of planned giving may be discussed with your estate advisor. Gifts-In-KindIn addition to annual cash gifts, various goods and services are needed to build the strength of our athletic department. Catering services, printing supplies, and courtesy cars are simply a few items among the department’s day-to-day needs.

Capital ProjectsGifts to specific capital projects are made for new construction or renovations of existing facilities necessary to the operations of the Georgia Southern Athletic Department.

PROGRAm GOALS FiSCAL YEAR 2011

It is the ultimate goal of the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation to support the athletic department’s budget to provide the students, coaches and administration the resources necessary to provide a prime opportunity for every student-athlete to win a championship ring and earn his or her degree.

The Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation seeks to accomplish the following goals for the current fiscal year. Our Eagle Fund goal this year is $1.1 million; an increase necessary to assist the athletic department offset potential budget decreases.

• Expand membership base to 2,500 donors — an increase of 16%

• Increase volunteer leadership base to 175 by recruiting 50 additional volunteers

and engaging them with our volunteer training program

• Continue the comprehensive communications strategy

• Increase annual unrestricted campaign contributions by $350,000

• Secure funding for capital projects

Eagle Fund

The Eagle Fund is the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation’s annual drive for donations to support the

yearly scholarship commitment in addition to benefiting the priority needs of the athletic department. Gifts provide

an avenue for each of our 400 student-athletes to receive an education, and further his or her pursuit of our vision,

“Rings and Diplomas.”
