100th Anniversary Grand Celebration

Pittsburgh, Aug. 17-19, 2012

The 100th Anniversary Grand Celebration will take place in the city of Pittsburgh, Friday, Aug. 17-Sunday Aug. 19, 2012. Early Bird Registration ends May 15, 2012. For just $5, paid registrants will receive a fabulous Patch Bracelet unique to GSWPA. This bracelet is your ticket to the Opening Ceremony, the large-scale Bridging Ceremony, Exhibits, the Forever Green Take Action Project, the Faith-based Celebration and the Time Capsule Photo Booth.

After May 15, the cost increases to $10 per participant, so register early! There is a separate fee for participation in the parade, some Program Partner events, buses and housing. These costs, as well as a detailed information packet, can be found at gswpa.org/100th-anniversary/grand-celebration.

Friday, Aug. 176-9 p.m. ............................Opening Ceremony at the David L.

Lawrence Convention Center will include a flag ceremony in partnership with members of our various Armed Forces.

Saturday, Aug. 189:45 a.m.-noon ............Parade officially begins along Grant

Street. Parade participants will pay an extra $3 safety fee, and those with floats will pay an additional $30 safety fee.

1-4 p.m. .............................Grand Wyndham Pittsburgh hosts over 100 exhibitors.

5 p.m. ..................................Bridging ceremony on one of Pittsburgh’s famous bridges.

Sunday, Aug. 1911 a.m.-1 p.m. .................Forever Green will take place in the David

L. Lawrence Convention Center. Look for many environmental partners to set up booths as well as a number of activities in which our girls will be active participants.

1:30-3:30 p.m. ..............The Interfaith Celebration at the Convention Center will feature our GSWPA Choir. The celebration will focus on the similarities of religions (i.e. light, care of the Earth, care of one another).

Time CapsuleThroughout the weekend, be a part of our Time Capsule by having your photo taken holding a white board with your answer to the question, “What is your wish for the next 100 years of Girl Scouting?”

ExtrasBe sure to take advantage of events sponsored on Saturday afternoon by our Program Partners, the Heinz History Center, the Carnegie Science Center and Point Park University. Details of each event are on our website, but space is limited so sign up early! There are various housing choices, including downtown hotels, camps, the Children’s Museum, and Heinz History Center and Carnegie Science Center slumber parties. All pricing is available at gswpa.org/ 100th-anniversary/grand-celebration. Buses will be available from Altoona, Johnstown and Edinboro.

Seeking Singing Superstars: “I Want to Rock the Mall” ContestAs part of the 100th Anniversary celebration, Girl Scouts is hosting the “I Want to Rock the Mall” YouTube contest, sponsored by K12 Inc. The winner will dazzle the stage with a live performance in front

of hundreds of thousands at Girl Scouts Rock the Mall: 100th Anniversary Sing-Along in Washington, D.C., on June 9! Plus, she’ll be introduced to and share a stage with American Idol finalist and Girl Scout alumna Thia Megia.To enter, write an original song expressing what it’s like to be a Girl Scout today and record your performance of it. Post it at www.youtube.com/GSRocktheMall by April 20. The top 10 entries will receive recognition at the event and a Girl Scouts Rock the Mall T-shirt. Pennsylvania Girl Scout Tree Planting Initiative In May 2012, the three Girl Scout councils in Pennsylvania will join forces to plant 10,000 trees statewide. Every registered Girl Scout will have the opportunity to plant and tend a sapling in honor of Girl Scouts 100th Anniversary. Trees planted in Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania’s jurisdiction will not only honor this momentous milestone in Girl Scout history, but will also help contribute toward the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s goal of planting 1 million trees by 2020! The trees, three-year-old Eastern White Pine and Eastern Hemlock saplings from Musser Forests in Indiana County, will be available for pick up and planting between May 18-27. Deadline to reserve tree(s) is March 15.

Go Healthy! Pages 13-14: Learn about all aspects of a healthy lifestyle! Events that help girls “Go Healthy” provide experiences related to exercise, self-esteem, positive thinking, teamwork, healthcare skills and overall wellness.

Gear Up! Pages 15-17: These activities provide science experiments and projects, exposure to careers in math and science, technical skill-building opportunities, training in math and finance, and experience with the gadgetry you’ll need to “tech” over.

L.H.H. RangersThe Ranger program is hands-on continuing leadership training for Girl Scouts who are interested in learning about the outdoors. Hike and help with trail maintenance, learn fire-building skills, campfire cooking and “Leave No Trace” methods, explore the Big Sandy Creek and complete service projects. Rangers are taught to identify wild flowers, birds, trees and animal tracks so they can lead council-sponsored Nature Day programs. Attending the L.H.H. Ranger program is not something you do once or twice: it is a commitment to developing your leadership skills and sharing your love of the outdoors with younger girls as you lead the Nature Day programs at Camp Roy Weller and Camp Conshatawba. Nature Days occur eight times a year, four in the fall (the last two Saturdays in September and first two Saturdays in October) and four in the spring (the last two Saturdays in April and first two Saturdays in May). To earn the Ranger Bar, girls must attend two camping weekends and a weeklong camp in June, as well as participate in four Nature Days. Requirements can be fulfilled over multiple years. Camporee and Canoe FloatThis fun-filled weekend will start by camping overnight at Pymatuning State Park. Camp Property Site Team Spring Meetings

Who: All Girl Scouts and registered volunteers who are approved through our Volunteer Application process.

When: May 4-6

Where: Camp Conshatawba, Camp Curry Creek, Camp Elliott, Camp Hawthorne Ridge, Camp Singing Hills, Camp Skymeadow, Camp Redwing, Camp Resting Waters and Camp Roy Weller.

Team up with other girls and adults working on projects throughout the camp. Bring your Girl Scout(s) and join the camp’s site team in repairing and refreshing the camp property. Members can stay overnight at no charge. (You’re welcome to stay Friday, Saturday or both nights.) You are also welcome to come on Saturday just for the day.

Girls ages 5-17 who are not currently Girl Scout members but wish to become a member should add $12 to the event fee to cover the annual membership dues with Girl Scouts of the United States of America. The membership year is Oct. 1 through Sept. 30. Once registered as a Girl Scout, girls will receive information about more events and opportunities in which they may participate. Event Confirmation: Detailed confirmation materials will be sent directly to each participant, for both troop and individual registrations, upon receipt of the event registration. Receipt of confirmation material does not guarantee that the event will meet the minimum participant requirement to operate. All registration correspondence, including confirmation materials, will occur via email if an email address is provided on the event registration form. Write neatly. If an email address is not provided, correspondence will occur via mail.All incoming registration checks are receipted prior to being entered into the event registration system. Do not assume that you are registered for an event if the check is cashed.Once an event is full, registrants will be placed on a wait list, notified of their status and be given options to: 1) remain on the wait list, 2) reschedule or 3) cancel. New sessions may also be scheduled for those events that fill quickly. Be sure to check the Calendar and Registration site often for updates and program additions. stop us…we had pancakes with marshmallows, jam, chocolate chips and bug juice. We still laugh about it years later: The girls learned to be very resourceful and still had fun. Isn’t that what Girl Scouts is all about?”

• Share a Girl Scout Thank You e-card from GSWPA. Visit gswpa.org/volunteer/traditions/girl-scout-leaders-day to access the free card.

• Nominate someone for a Volunteer Recognition Award. Go to the Volunteer Resources section of gswpa.org for an application.

• Create a slide show of your troop “in action,” and share it with your troop volunteers and Service Unit Manager or Team via email, at your troop meeting or on a CD. Nothing says “thank you” better than sharing success.

• Have your girls create a thank you card for your Service Unit leadership and/or troop volunteers.

• Post a “thank you” on Facebook, Twitter or your Service Unit website.

3. What volunteer position(s) have you held with Girl Scouts?Assistant leader, leader, Service Unit delegate and Service Unit event coordinator, Hawthorne Ridge site team member, Certified Archery Instructor and day camp unit leader.

4. Why did you choose to become a Girl Scout volunteer?My daughter wanted to be a Girl Scout Daisy and they needed an Assistant Leader to start a troop. I was a Den Mother and Webelos Leader with my husband for my son and thoroughly enjoyed it. I figured I better volunteer if this was the only way she could join a troop. That was 12 years ago.

5. What motivates you, in general, to volunteer, and want to help others?The girls are just so driven and full of ideas. I see a successful leader in each and every one of them. They always have a project going so there is never an end point in sight; we just keep pushing ahead. When I see the girls engaged in a project or interacting in the community I think, “What would they be doing right now if they were not in Girl Scouts? Would they have these opportunities?” We do things that they would never be able to do if it were not for their involvement in Girl Scouts. Every time a girl says, “I remember when we did this or that,” or that they had a great time, it empowers me to keep going. As long as they keep coming back I will be here.

6. How many years have you volunteered?More than 12 years.

7. How did you come to know Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania?I was a Girl Scout Junior and Cadette and then became a Leader when my daughter was trying to join a troop.

8. What volunteer positions are you most interested in now?I really enjoy them all. Every one of them is unique.

9. What are your initial thoughts and reactions to your volunteer experience?I think GSWPA is really striving to provide the best experiences possible for girls. Is it perfect? No, but that is where the girls can try and make a difference. I encourage the girls in my troop to attend Town Hall and Site Team meetings, and several have applied for the new girl positions on the Board of Directors. We even had three go to the National Convention in Houston, one as a Girl Delegate and two to the Leadership Conference. I always encourage the girls to get involved if they want to make change happen. I think feeling ownership of their troop, camps and council helps with the retention of girls in Girl Scouts, especially past the middle school years.

10. What is one of your most memorable volunteer experiences?I could never pick just one. I have had so many adventures with our troop. We have done a lot of traveling—seeing the girls plan, make phone calls, research, write checks, etc., and then experience what they have planned,´ has been a highlight of my volunteer years. Spending two weeks with teenagers on the road is pretty unforgettable. I think they would say it was making desserts while blindfolded. The one thing, though, that really sticks out in my mind was when the girls decided to make a memory book for their bridging ceremony this last fall. Each girl created a page on a different topic such as memorable camp experiences, trips we have taken, favorite badge work, etc. They also did a page on memories of their leaders. It was funny yet heartwarming. They do remember the things we have done and I hope I am making a difference in their lives.

Outdoor 101Prerequisite: Girl Scouting 101. Choose either the self-study or hands-on format. This training focuses on age-appropriate activities, outdoor progression, facility reservation procedures, safety hazard tips for outdoors, fire safety when using a fireplace and planning in partnership with girls for a lodge camping experience. The self-study format is designed for volunteers to learn at their own pace. A question and answer sheet is completed and submitted for credit to be given. A link to the Outdoor 101 manual is available for you to begin your course by clicking on Adult Learning Opportunities. The hands-on format is a two-hour course and is generally offered at a Girl Scout camp property or a site chosen by the trainer. There is no charge for this course.

Basic Camping SkillsPrerequisite: Girl Scouting 101 and Outdoor 101.This four-hour course focuses on understanding how to make, use and extinguish a campfire; tips on planning, preparation and clean-up steps for a cook-out; learning basic tool crafts and elementary knots; making simple meals; knife safety; graces to use in the camp setting; and learning how to work in partnership with girls for outdoor cooking experiences. This course is geared toward, but not limited to, troop leaders of grades 2-5. Completion of this training allows you to stay overnight in lodges and cabins at council-owned properties, and to lead cookouts and have campfires. It is also required for any outdoor cooking or fire-building at any site—including non-GSWPA properties.

Volunteering at Camp?

Basic Platform Tent and Yurt Camping SkillsPrerequisite: Girl Scouting 101, Outdoor 101 and Basic Camping Skills.This overnight course (approximately 21 hours long) focuses on a camping experience in tents, including platform tents and yurts. Included in this course is the care and use of platform tents or yurts, more outdoor cooking options, knots needed for platform tent and yurt camping, simple lashing skills, advanced tool craft, care and use of lanterns and nature skills. This outdoor training is geared toward, but not limited to, Girl Scout Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador leaders.

Additional Outdoor Enrichments include: Intro to Backpacking, Basic Archery Certification, Canoeing, First Aid/CPR and Wilderness First Aid. Adult Learning Opportunity InstructionsTraining PolicyAll volunteers will receive training for their position and will be required to complete additional trainings that are designatedas mandatory for their position within a specified time frame. Training will ensure that each volunteer has theknowledge and skills needed to be successful in her/his work.Registration InstructionsRegistration is required for all council-sponsored learning opportunities.

Child CareBabysitting is not provided. Small children may be distracting to both the trainer/learning facilitator and theparticipants. Please make arrangements for the care of your children while you attend a training session. PunctualityPlease be punctual to ensure that all training sessions begin and end at the times indicated. Participants who missmore than 30 minutes of training will not receive credit for the session until the missed training information is completedthrough another training session, at which time the training card will be signed.CancellationsTraining sessions may be cancelled due to inclement weather, trainer illness or if fewer than five (5) people register by thedeadline. If a training session is cancelled, only those registered will be notified. Refund PolicyRefunds will be given when:• Participants cancel at least five (5) weeks prior to an event.• The council cancels the learning opportunity.• The participant cannot attend due to illness, and a physician’s statement accompanies a written request for a refund.• The participant cannot attend due to a family emergency and an explanation of the emergency situation

accompanies a written request for a refund.• A written notice of cancellation addressed to: Registrar, GSWPA, 5681 Route 6N, Edinboro, PA 16412, is received at

least two (2) weeks prior to the event, unless due to medical or family emergency.

Notification for Accounts Receivable Conversion (ARC)Checks received by Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania may be converted into an electronic debit for clearing. Thecreation of an electronic debit requires Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania to destroy the original check for privacyreasons. You will not receive your check back from the bank.
