Insurance Institute

Learning for the real world. Rewarding.™

I would like to begin by first thanking Committee members for their dedication, support, and professionalism. The Committee is comprised of individuals fromvarious backgrounds in the insurance industry. The Committee continues tosuccessfully fulfill its mandate which includes assurance reviews of class instructionand providing feedback on instructor needs.

I am going to take this opportunity however, to discuss the importance of volunteerism inour industry. Since my earlier career as an underwriter with the Dominion of Canada, I’vehad opportunities to work in various roles throughout the industry and to be inspired byexcellent managers and peers. One behavioral attribute and common trait of theseindividuals is a penchant for volunteering. Therefore, when the opportunity to serve theInsurance Institute arose, my response was clear. Today, my perspective on the benefits ofvolunteering is further strengthened when I observe the levels of commitment displayedby those on not only the Committee I chair, but on all of the various Committeesthroughout the Institute. Furthermore, within my own organization, the Facility Association,I am privileged to be part of a management team that places a premium on goodgovernance and volunteerism, a culture supported and manifested by our own Board andCommittees. In the recent Institute convocation, key note speaker Craig Kielburger, founderof Free the Children, described the positive benefits volunteering has brought tocommunities across the globe. I strongly believe that the same energy can be used topromote and advance our industry efforts right here at home and I encourage reachingout to your local Institute and volunteer.

Strive For Excellence

The CIP Society continues to strive for excellence, setting high standards of professional growth andindustry collaboration through engagingnetworking events. This success is not possiblewithout the tremendous time, effort and energyof many volunteers who bring together theirinsight, knowledge and experience. I would liketo take this opportunity to draw attention tosome of the key events that the CIP SocietyCommittee members and the team from theInsurance Institute have offered to members overthe past year.

In February, we celebrated the accomplishmentsof our new FCIP graduates as well our twocurrent Fellow of Distinction Award winners,Carol Jardine, FCIP, CRM of TD Insurance andMichael Boyce, FCIP of HIROC, at the Fellows’

Reception. These professionals were honoured for reaching this impressive milestone intheir career and provided a good opportunity for old friends and new to mingle andcelebrate the amazing accomplishments of their fellow industry colleagues. Talentedindustry curlers brought their A game to the CIP Society Curling Bonspiel, also held inFebruary, which was offered in conjunction with the Insurance Institute’s NationalEducation Week. Participants commented that it was a great way to network in a casualsetting with a little healthy competition.

The annual CIP Society Symposium was held in May. Every year this event is highlyanticipated throughout the industry and features inspiring keynotes speakers, and 2012 wasno exception. This past year our distinguished speakers included Fabian Richenberger,President of Northbridge Insurance and D. Glenn Foster, Author, ‘The Kinesic InterviewTechnique and How Can I Get Through to You?’

The next event in our busy schedule was our annual CIP Society Fellows’ Golf Tournament, held in June this year. The tournament was a sell out, with 144 golfers enjoying a first classcourse on a beautiful spring (more like summer) day, followed by a lovely dinner and prizeceremony. Thank you to our sponsors who generously support not only this event but ourother functions as well.

This fall we will host our well received wine and cheese event at a new venue, Arcadian Loft.We are excited to have a handwriting analysis expert lined up who will be able to teach you‘secrets’ about yourself through your handwriting. This event brings together professionals inthe industry for an intimate evening of networking, wine and hors d’oeuvres. To register forthis event, please visit www.insuranceinstitute.ca/gta or email Tracy Bodnar, eventscoordinator, at [email protected] .

With continued focus the CIP Society and its volunteers will without doubt continue toachieve success and raise the bar delivering first class functions and providing great venuesand opportunities for our insurance industry members to network, celebrate each others’successes, and be exposed to top professionals and leaders in our industry. I would like topersonally extend my sincere appreciation for the tremendous contributions and selflessdedication of our volunteers.

Enhance Your Leadership Skills in 2012There are emerging demands for management and leadership skills in the insuranceindustry. Are you prepared?

The Insurance Institute’s Management Development curriculum offers courses specificallydesigned to enhance the skills of career professionals to prepare them for the opportunitiesthat lie ahead. The curriculum was implemented to address the skill gaps in the area ofmanagement and leadership skills. This new curriculum offers concise, relevant, and skill-building courses to individual career professionals and managers.

Rationale For Management Development

Within the Canadian p & c insurance industry, a skills gap has been identified wherebymanagement will be most impacted by demographic change:

Retirement projections for the industry indicate that 25 percent of the current labourforce could retire by 2017

At all levels of management, 40 percent could retire by 2017.

There is less than one worker under the age of 45 for every manager currently in theindustry's work force

Existing middle and other managers are targeted for moving up. Non managers aretargeted to move in.

Did You Know...

Through the Institute's Demographic Research Study, it was noted that there is a disparitybetween management and non management skills. As such, there is a need formanagement training in the insurance industry.

Meeting The Educational Needs Of AdjustersIn 2010, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario’s (FSCO) five-year Automobile Reviewidentified that increased analysis and consideration of serious injury claims was needed. Asthe industry came together to assess what that would mean for insurance organizations, itwas soon realized that insurance claims departments needed to improve focus on theneeds of claimants with serious injuries. Specifically, claims adjusters would benefit fromtraining that focused on the person behind the claim and factors affecting their successfulrecovery. By training adjusters on the needs of seriously injured claimants, the industrycould reduce exposure to potential allegations of unfair and deceptive acts and practices.

With the endorsement of FSCO, the Ontario Insurance Adjusters’ Association (OIAA) andthe Insurance Institute of Ontario worked together to establish a severe injurymanagement program to help Accident Benefits and Bodily Injury adjusters serviceserious injury claimants. The program, Understanding Serious Injury: Adjusters’ Training &Education, is a result of a collaborative effort between experienced adjusters, practicedtraining consultants, OIAA experts, and the Insurance Institute of Ontario. In addition, the participation of industry subject matter experts and a variety of guest speakersranging from rehabilitation consultants to a past claimant make the program unique.

The eight-day certificate program is offered two-days per week over four weeks andincludes the following learning outcomes:

l Module 1 – Getting to Know the Injury: Medicine for the Non-medicall Module 2 – Sociological and Psychological Impactsl Module 3 – Community Resourcesl Module 4 – Understanding Opportunities for the Futurel Module 5 – Applying the Tools (an interactive case study)

Joins us at the GTA office from November 1-23, 2012 for this insightful and engagingprogram. To learn more about the 8-day certificate program and how it can benefit youand your organization, please visit us on-line at www.insuranceinstitute.ca/seriousinjury.
