I may show up during maple sugar time! I have to add I did enjoy Dale Buser’s interpretation of fish as people. I am looking forward to the next few months as a time to relax and regroup as far as GTGC is concerned. We have had an incredibly busy year with our active participation in the GCA Annual Meeting meeting, Art en Fleur, as well as our regular monthly meetings. Now we can take a breather and just enjoy the great programs that we have scheduled. I am especially looking forward to the November 8th meeting. What a beautiful Fall we have had! I really hated to put my gardens to bed for the winter…. I hope all of you were able to get all your plants inside before the temps began to change.

Thanks again to Stephanie Cox and Barb Wells for being co-hostesses at our meeting at Lime Kiln Park. Also a big thank you to Peg Uihlein for allowing us to tour her property. I may show up during maple sugar time! I have to add I did enjoy Dale Buser’s interpretation of fish as people. Dams part III

We had an informative presentation at Lime Kiln Park, Tuesday October 11. Hydrologist, Dale J Buser gave a presentation explaining many aspects of dam history, construction, demolition, and value. We thought it might be helpful to have the definitions of terms*. Mill Race - this is the channel leading away from the reservoir to a point downstream. The water level is equal to the reservoir and is higher than the portion of the river downstream of the dam. The user of the water gains power by dropping this water through a turbine. The greater the fall, the greater the power. Spillway - a portion of the dam where excess water exits. If the mill race is not operating, all water is going over or through a spillway. The spillway should be designed to pass large floods and must be extremely resistant to erosion. A fixed crest weir is the type of spillway commonly used in mill dams in the area. Some dams have operable gates. Fishway - our native fish are not powerful swimmers or jumpers. Fishways are built to accommodate their abilities. As opposed to swimming fast or jumping high, the fishway allows fish to follow an easier path more in line with their ability --- it acts something like a handicap ramp. A fishway is installed and operating in Thiensville. A camera captures images of the fish passing through the fishway. More information can be found at: http://www.co.ozaukee.wi.us/1248/Fishway-Camera and http:// www.co.ozaukee.wi.us/1251/Passed-Fish. **Wisconsin Dam Summary:There are approximately 3,800 dams in existence in the State of Wisconsin. Since the late 19th century, more than 700 dams have been built, then washed out or removed. Since 1967, approximately 100 dams have been removed.Almost 60% of the dams in Wisconsin are owned by a former company or private individual, 9% by the State of Wisconsin, 17% by a municipality such as a township or county government, and 14% by other ownership types. The federal government has jurisdiction over most large dams in Wisconsin that produce hydroelectricity – approximately 5% or nearly200dams.The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources regulates the rest of the dams. * source: Dale J Buser**source: Milwaukee River KeepersWe cannot say enough nice things about the meeting ending with a walk through Peg Uihlein’s beautiful wooded easement, yard and home. Thank you Peg.

Creating Holiday Arrangements from Liz Gebhardt, Flower Show Chair Bjorn Chinander joined Sendik's in 2013 and has been a dynamic force in setting trends, styling events, and cultivating relationships for the Home Department. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in Theatre Arts but soon found that his passion for flowers, interior design, and fashion led him to the floral world. Bjorn's vibrant style and engaging personality quickly made him a customer favorite. As a seasoned designer with over ten years of experience, he enjoys creating one-of-a-kind designs that bring his clients vision to life. He loves nothing more than working creatively with flowers and has been featured in M Magazine and Milwaukee Magazine. In 2015, Bjorn was awarded first prize at Milwaukee Art Museum's Art in Bloom as well as several choice awards. His motto: "It's not done, til it's overdone!" perfectly describes the exuberance and joy that Bjorn brings to the floral industry, his customers, and Sendik's Home every day.

Congratulations to Polly Beal! Polly has been a member of the GTGC since 1999. She has lent her spirited leadership skills to our club for many years, acting as our club president, serving on the board, co-chairing the Zone XI Annual Meeting, the last House & Garden Tour and numerous other leadership roles in the area of photography and beyond. Success Blooms at Teens Grow Greens From Barbara Frank

Teens Grow Greens is growing not just beautiful vegetables, but also responsible, confident young adults. According to Charlie Uihlein, “every graduate of TGG has either graduated or is on track to graduate from high school, compared with the state graduation rate of 66% for black students. And 90% of TGG graduates were able to obtain and retain employment for the summer of 2016 compared with 27% of youth in Milwaukee.” Clearly, TGG’s intensive one-on-one mentoring produces powerful positive results for its students. Recently one of the 2015 graduates, Quinn, returned to tell the class of 2016 about his new job as a Police Aide. “In TGG I found that I wanted to work with my community. And now I’m excited to continue that work.” Quinn graduated from Rufus King High School last spring. This past summer, the teens honed their gardening and mentoring skills by teaching 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who attend school near Fred’s Garden, 2325 W. Nash., how to grow vegetables and sell them at a nearby farm stand. Money made was distributed to the children who participated. In 2017, Teens Grow Greens plans to double its size and impact by adding a second pod of 12 teens. Green Tree Garden Club can feel wonderful about the $6000 we gave to TGG and the volunteer hours contributed by 12 of our members in 2014 and 2015.
