OIL. Refineries in Spainæ

uPSTREAM ANd dOWNSTREAM

The exploration and production area (E&P), also known as upstream in the hydrocarbon sector, involves the ex-ploration and production of oil and natural gas.

upstream includes hydrocarbon exploration and pro-duction. Exploration is the search for oil and gas on the earth’s crust, in underground or submarine oilfields, in this phase, geological and geophysical work is carried out, as well as the perforation of exploratory wells. Once having verified the existence of commercially viable hydrocarbon quantities, field development is commen-ced for facilitating the extraction to the surface and to begin production. In Repsol, the upstream business con-

centrates on three large areas: North Africa, Latin Ameri-ca, Trinidad and Tobago, the deep-waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil.

downstream includes refining, petrochemical, distri-bution and marketing of derivative oil products. Repsol operates 3 chemical plants and 9 refineries across the world that process more than 50 million tons of crude oil that is transformed int a wide range of products: petrol, diesel, lubricants, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), asphalt, plastic, fertilizers, rubber, paraffin, resin, etc. The company distributes these products and markets them through an extensive commercial network that relies on near 7,000 service stations throughout the word and also has more than 10 million butane and propane gas clients.

A CORuÑA

A Coruña refinery was opened on september 11th 1964. The refinery was installed in the Bens valley, 3 km. from the city and 5,5 km. from A Coruña port. Though the location is the same, it has nothing to do with the first complex of 1964. Recent years’ investments have seen considerable economic effort that has contributed to the complex development.

PuERTOLLANO

The Puertollano Industrial Complex has a crude distilla-tion capacity of 7,5 million tonnes per year, with a deep conversion scheme to petroleum coke. The Puertollano refinery is the most complex of all spanish refineries, both due to the variety of products and to the integration of the units. The location of the Puertollano Industrial Com-plex is ideally suited to meet the needs of combustion products of the peninsular interior.

CARTAGENA

Cartagena was the first refinery of the Peninsula. Joined from 2000 to the Puertollano refinery by a oil pipeline, has a treatment capacity of 5.5 million tonnes per year and consists of two main areas: production of fuels and other base oils, asphalts, waxes and aromatic oils.

Currently is undergoing an ambitious expansion project to be built 22 new units, increasing to 11 million tons of refining capacity.

TARRAGONA

The Tarragona industrial complex began its production in 1975. Today, its handling capacity has reached 9.4 mi-llion tons of oil. It also produces about one million tons of petrochemical monomers and generates 80 MWh of electricity per year.

The facility, which is specially prepared to adapt at all ti-mes their production to market demands, offers quality products and always devoted great attention to safety, prevention and respect for the environment.

PETRONOR

Industrial facilities are located in the municipalities of Muskiz, Abanto and Ciérvana on the coast of Bizkaia and occupy an area of 200 hectares.

ChemICALS. business Unitsæ

REPSOL

Repsol is an integrated international company, dedica-ted to the exploration and oil production, refining and marketing, chemicals and gas. It is one of the ten largest private oil companies in the world and the largest private energy company in Latin America in terms of assets.

In its chemical activity, Repsol manufactures and mar-kets a wide variety of products, ranging from basic to petrochemical derived. It markets its products in over 80 countries around the world, while maintaining a leading position in the nearest markets, Southern Europe and MERCOSUR.

REPSOL’s European chemical producion lays in three lar-ge petrochemical complexes. Two in Spain, located in Puertollano and Tarragona and one in Portugal, Sines. Repsol Química has also various subsidiaries and affilia-tes, through which has additional plants dedicated to manufacturing products of high added value.

The production capacity in Europe is more than five mi-llion tons per year, resulting in net foreign sales of close to 4.1 million tonnes per year.

BASiC PETROChEMiCALS

The Business Unit Basic Petrochemicals represents most of the areas in volume production, with a higher amount to 2,500,000 tons annually.

Basic Petrochemicals deals with the production of mono-mers, which are the basis for all petrochemical derivative. This business unit is responsible for most of the raw ma-terials to the other two units of Repsol Quimica.

In addition, Basic Petrochemicals operates a subsidiary called General Química, which manufactures products

such as accelerators, antioxidants, reactive dyes, pig-ments and organic intermediates.

iNTERMEdiATE PROduCTS

The Business Unit of intermediates products includes products for different needs in various areas of life, do-mestic, industrial and infrastructure.

The annual production capacity of over 1,100,000 tons.The vast majority of the world production of propylene oxide is used as feedstock for the production of polyols.

Polyurethanes, one of the most versatile plastics, use po-lyols as main raw material. The polyurethanes are used as flexible foams for the production of mattresses, automo-bile seats and furniture; for building insulation are used as rigid foams, so important in saving fuel and appliances.

Other applications of polyols include paints, coatings, ad-hesives and sealants.

Styrene is the feedstock for the production of polystyre-nics, rubbers and resins used in the manufacture of a wide variety of products.

Polidux subsidiary manufactures and markets thermo-plastic belonging to the family of styrenic and are classi-fied in engineering plastics.

Polidux ABS / SAN is used in industrial parts, appliances, household, automotive and sporting goods. Polidux EPS is used in building materials and packaging.

The PMMA, known in everyday life as methacrylate, is manufactured in sheets and blocks for signaling, cons-truction, decoration and bathtubs.

Special attention merce rubber production by the com-pany Dynasol, one of the two largest producers in the world, in which Repsol holds 50%. Synthetic rubber applications are as diverse as asphalts, modified plastics and footwear.

The Sines refinery is one of the largest in Europe, with a distillation capacity of 10.8 million tons per year, or 220 thousand barrels per day.

The Sines refinery began operations in 1978. This manu-facturing unit is very important for economic activity in Portugal, is strategically located in Sines, 150 kilometers south of Lisbon in one of the busiest routes of oil.

It occupies an area of 320 hectares with a storage capaci-ty of 3 million m3, of which 1,5 million are of crude oil and other intermediate and final products, such as gas, petrol, diesel, etc.) The refinery has 25 process units.

The Sines refinery has a configuration of Processes Desig-ned to maximize gasoline production from raw material, catalytic conversion unit Having a very heavy distillates, Called FCC (Fluidic Catalytic Cracking).

The Sines refinery produces:

Petrol, Diesel, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), Fuel, FTA or NAFTA (used by the petrochemical industry to make plas-tic polymers, fibers, fabric and even chewing gum), Jet fuel (aviation fuel), Bitumen (for asphalt and insulation), sulfur (for the pharmaceutical industry, agriculture and bleaching of wood pulp).

These fuels are produced with the latest standards and environmental requirements, where gasoline and diesel are characterized by a low content of sulfur (10 ppm).

POLYOLEfiNS

The Polyolefins, which are the most popular plastic, have a combination of properties such as flexibility, strength, light weight, stability, waterproof and easy sterilization. This combination makes the polyolefins the preferred material and suitable for a wide variety of applications.

These products are used in many applications for all kinds of uses, some of them generals and other highly specia-lized. Since the material for packing up the water pipes and gas appliances, cable coating, fibers or components for automobiles. Polyolefins are of special importance in the manufacture of films for agriculture, a sector in

which Repsol Quimica’s area plays an essential role.

fibres are a new group of products with a host of versa-tile applications.
