Smart City scheme: Tech to drive innovative business ideas
Car navigation systems that can predict where and when traffic jams might occur, by siphoning data from
sensors in roads and other vehicles. Cameras that can spot litter in public places and call in the cleaning
crew. Self-adjusting street lamps.
These are just a few of the scenarios that could become commonplace as smart cities take hold over the
next few years. Driven by rising urbanisation and fuelled by technologies such as the IoT and data analyt-
ics, smart cities are on the cusp of explosive growth. Glasgow, Barcelona, Nice, New York City, London
and Singapore have already embarked on the trek. The smart city tech market ...

Not smart: If private players solve urban transport problems, governments shouldn’t get in the way
The furore over surging pollution levels in our cities which have made them among the worst in the world
on air pollution – and the perilous impact this has on citizens’ health – do not seem to have significant im-
pact on getting governments to address this growing crisis, apart from the tokenist odd-even scheme in
Delhi. Governments, both at the Centre and states, continue to quibble and nit-pick on petty issues ignoring
the enormity of the problem. The red flags raised by Delhi lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung to the Aam
Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s proposal to flag off an app based premium bus service – on the lines of
app based taxi services – to boost the rapidly buckling public transport system in the capital city, is only the
latest instance of government culture steeped in bureaucracy and political infighting. ...

Threat of Cyber Attacks in Smart Cities
Smart cities are outcome of integration of technologies with new
or existing urban landscapes. There is going to be a paradigm
shift of what we experience and what we come to expect from
the cities around us. These “smart cities” integrate cyber-
physical technologies and infrastructure to create environmental
and economic efficiency while improving the overall quality of
life.
This have created important increases in the understanding of infrastructure usage, improved efficiency,
and better service provision to citizens. In times to come, smart cities will provide businesses with unprece-
dented economic opportunities. In effect, these transformations of today’s cities into smart cities will be an
amalgamation of two major technologies – millions of sensors connected to devices dispersed across a city
i.e Internet of Things (IoT) and Network that connects all of these nodes together and enables real-time
communication. ...

Bringing Alive the Indian Smart City Dream

It was gratifying that young engineers showed keen interest in Start up initiative and thus become job crea-
tor and nor job seeker, very much in line with vision of our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Some more similar start up workshop would be worth while in other centres in Gujarat and elsewhere in
India.
