What Exactly is Public Speaking and

Why should I know how to do it!

Round-up is the name of the public speaking contest in 4-H because of all the projects you can participate in

In it, you create a speech called an “Educational Presentation” and present it to the judges

In the past, these were called Illustrated Talks and Method Demonstrations

These speeches can be on just about anything!

What are the Categories?

There are 16 different categories you can enter in the contest...you can have from 1-5 members in your presentation and they are 12 minutes maximum…they are:

Public Speaking Public Speaking is an

individual contest. No team entries.

No props, visual aids, or audio/video recordings are permitted.

Time limit for public speaking presentations is 5-7 minutes.

Topic should relate to current events related to youth.

How do I Prepare for the Contest?

The first thing to do is choose

your topic

What do you like

What do you know about

What would you like to know MORE about

Research; the more you know,

the better the presentation!

Where do I start???

Once you have the topic of your speech, you

should try to organize your thoughts from

start to finish

This is called brainstorming

It’s a way to organize all your information to a

clear presentation

Head This is where you introduce your speech

Attention-Getters, Interesting Facts, Intro to topic and the major points

Basically, tell them what you are about to tell them

Body This is the bulk of your speech

Explain your major points, this is where you get into the details and the cool information about your topic

Tell them

Tail This is where you bring your speech to the end

Restate your main points and summarize any other information you want. Leave the listener with something to think about

Include your resources you used in your research

How to Present Your Speech

Attention getters are an excellent way to

draw others into listening to you or to bring

them back when they drift off

They can be catchy, eye opening, scary, funny,

loud…so long as they work!

Facts

All of your visuals (posters, power points, etc) should be neat, easy to read, colorful, interesting and free of errors! Be sure to test your computers and projectors before the

speech

You should use PROPS to: Highlight parts of your speech

Another good example would be to make handouts and brochures to distribute at the end of the speech
