Selling the home you’re living in before buying

another one is the fi nancially safe option in

most circumstances. But could the state of the market

You may then feel that the best solution is to take less for your current home in order to save the costs of bridging fi nance.

There is no hard and fast rule that covers buying or selling fi rst as each person’s individual fi nancial and accommodation options vary; however, it is almost always useful to take into account the state of the market before making a decision. In a sellers’ market where prices are rising and there are more buyers than properties for sale, it might be sensible to buy fi rst, and make it conditional on selling your own property as your property is likely

Watch out for aphids. Start deadheading your roses for their next fl owering in autumn. If they’re hybrid teas, cut them back to where the branch is as thick as a pencil – so the next shoot that grows from there will have enough growth to produce a fl ower. Prune back your spring growth on hedges and topiary balls.

Remember to keep watering and make sure you do it in the morning, not at night, so the sun has a chance to dry the moisture o� your leaves. If you water at night the moisture will rot the leaves overnight.

If your pot plants look like they’re getting a bit dry, put a thin layer of stones on the top of the soil to retain the moisture.

If it’s really dry around your tomatoes, put a thin layer of newspaper and then some compost on top to keep the moisture level steady. Stake your tomatoes. Avoid tipping water on their leaves so as not to cause blight.

And remember to pick o� the laterals as they develop. If you imagine a tomato plant has a main trunk that grows straight up with branches growing this trunk at roughly 90 degrees, the laterals are the smaller stems that develop at approximately 45 degrees in between the main trunk and branch.

Often laterals won’t produce fruit but can produce a lot of leaves. If you pick them o� it allows the plant to put all its energy into growing fruit, rather than a whole lot of leaves you don’t need. Apply the same formula for working out the laterals on the main trunk to working out which are the laterals on each subsequent branch. Make sense?

Simply made for kidsI can’t think of a vegetable that’s

more fun for kids to eat than sweetcorn. I have many happy memories of sitting around the table engrossed in a hearty cob or two.

Since I’ve become a parent, I’ve discovered it’s also a great time-killer for the wee ones – though mine aren’t quite so wee any more. Pop them outside with a few cobs left over from last night’s dinner and it’ll keep them

busy long enough for you to get a job or two done (or even enjoy a cuppa if you’re lucky).

If you like to put more time and e� ort into your meal preparation, you can, of course, also turn your corn into fritters, or add it to salads or Mexican dishes. The options are endless.

Sold? Great, because now’s the time to get planting. Grab some Awapuni Nurseries sweetcorn seedlings next time you’re down at your local supermarket, Bunnings, or The Warehouse.

Alternatively, head to our online store at www.awapuni.co.nz and have them delivered direct to your door. For a family of four you’ll need around 20 plants, or two bundles.

Corn likes sunny and free-draining conditions, so make sure you fi nd the right planting spot. It will also need a bit of space to grow.

Once you’ve found your place, dig a little hole and plant your seedlings about 20cm apart from each other. I like to plant mine in rows or in a group so each plant can support another as they grow taller.

As the corncob starts to form, it’s important to water your plants to ensure they don’t dry out. You should be able to get around two cobs o� a plant starting in late summer. Not sure if they’re ready?

Peel back the husk of the cob a little bit and if they look juicy, they’re ripe for the picking. Still look a little hard? Give them some more time.

Once they’re ready for action and you’ve harvested the entire crop, pull the plants out. Sweetcorn can take a lot of nitrogen out of the soil so try planting peas and beans in the spot where your corn was. Not only will they bump up the nitrogen content again, these kid-friendly greens will also help keep little hands busy at the dinner table.

The twinkling lights of Christmas will be dotted around Mid Canterbury again this year with many people keen to dress up their properties to spread some festive spirit.

Unlike other districts, there is not one single street in the district where all residents light up their properties with fairy lights and large as life decorations, instead they are scattered throu ghout. However there are two adjoining properties

festively lighting up Melcombe Street in Tinwald.

In past years Methven painter Frank Sandys has made the e� ort at his Lochhead Crescent property but he has moved.

His new property on Hobbs Road in Methven, is promising to be bigger and better than ever with thousands of Christmas lights and decorations adorning his house and yard.

It’s an annual event Mr Sandys has enjoyed doing for the past eight years.

What started as a project with his daughter Brooke, has now grown into Mr Sandys’ annual enjoyment.

He spends a considerable amount of money on his Christmas extravaganza but has no intention of stopping.

And his larger section gives him more space to decorate.

Some of his decorations had been sourced from as far away as Australia.

He usually dresses up as Father Christmas for the holiday season.

This year, there are decorations ordered from Disney manufacturers who create for Disney.

It promises to be a marvellous display with any donations raised by people viewing the property going to the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade, where Mr Sandys is a volunteer fi reman.

Other houses on streets around the district to decorate their houses include those in Ashburton on Chalmers Avenue, Porter Street, Milton Road and in Tinwald there is Grove Street, Melcombe Street

and Archiblad Street.Keep your eyes out for the twinkling

lights of Christmas.

Foster and Allen

This legendary Irish folk music duo began in 1975 when Mick Foster and Tony Allen formed their duo FOSTER & ALLEN. For three years they toured cabaret venues in Ireland and the UK. Their big break-through came in 1978 when they released the single A Bunch of Thyme in Ireland which stayed in the Irish Charts for an unbelievable 53 weeks.
