Backyard Maintenance

Create a garden to suit your home, says Hannah Stephenson

If you've had time over the festive season to leaf through those gardening book gifts, or to visit a public garden and walk off those Christmas excesses, you should be awash with innovative ideas on designs to replicate in your garden this year.

If you are redesigning an established garden, you can retain mature features, moving large shrubs and border plants to create an immediate effect. The proportion of plants and features to open space in the garden is all-important and the general rule is one-third planting to two-thirds space. You need that space to properly see your garden and its features.

The garden can consist of many elements. Even a small garden could incorporate a mixture of different aspects, from lawn and paving to gravel, water and pebbles. If you have a tiny garden, think about incorporating vertical plants, using climbers to bring colour and texture upwards.

Vertical dimension will prevent

an otherwise flat area from looking boring. In a large garden, tall trees will take the eye upwards while, in a medium-sized garden, pergolas, arches and arbours are useful.

Consider using a few bold focal points to draw the eye across the garden at an angle to overcome the shortcomings of a small space. Drawing the eye to focal points elsewhere can also distract attention from an unattractive object or area, rather than trying to screen it.

If your garden is big enough to incorporate beds and borders, make sure they aren't too narrow. Too many plants end up cramped between fences and lawn in boring, straight borders which do nothing for the plants or the view. Think about introducing interesting curves to your borders to give them a more fluid feel.

The minimum width for a border should be about 1m and, even with that, you'll be limited to dwarf shrubs and fairly small perennials. If your design includes three layers of planting in a bed, you'll need an area of at least three sq m.

You may think that planting the tallest plants at the back of the border and graduating until you have

the smallest plants at the front is the best way to go, but there are certain plants you can use to break tradition.

Height in the foreground, as long as it doesn't block the line of vision, increases perspective and can make the garden seem longer. For this you can use wispy grasses such as Stipa gigantea, or perennials that produce light flower spikes such as Digitalis lutea, or see-through specimens such as Verbena bonariensis, which don't block the view of what's behind them.

Long, narrow gardens can be improved by dividing the area into several smaller sections, using hedges, low walls, raised beds or shrub borders that extend into the garden and prevent the eye being taken in a straight line to the end. Each area might incorporate a different theme, such as scent, water, herbs or flowers.

Of course, before any project can start, consider the type of gardener you are. Do you want a low maintenance plot, or one you can endlessly potter in? How much time will you be able to spend each week maintaining that space?

Draw up a plan either on a computer or with pencil and paper, to make an outline of the existing

garden and its dimensions. Include existing features you want to keep and potential obstacles you'll need to work around. Mark the direction of the sun, where it falls at particular times of the day and any permanent shadow. Then put tracing paper over the original plan and sketch ideas of your own, experimenting with layout and plantings, bearing in mind what the vista will look like from the house.

And don't make it too complicated. Remember clean lines and simple shapes will always work best. In design, less often is more.

There has been talk lately, both on TV and in the news, about the widespread use of methamphetamine (meth/P)

in New Zealand. A recent TV exclusive, from an anonymous informer employed by our customs security, estimated a wide percentage of illicit drugs are getting through, including methamphetamine and associated chemicals.

He put this down to there being limited people at the coal face trying to screen this drug and what he said was then not investigated further because there are not enough resource personnel to follow every investigation.

A 2011 Massy University report identified 32 per cent of meth users try to make it themselves.

The latest update report from John Key suggested up to 25,000 people in New Zealand were long-term users.

Seventy-five per cent of meth labs found by police in 2009 were in residential properties. Typically these were rental/investment properties. And between 2000 and 2012 there were 1900 meth lab busts.

The latest figures show 1 per cent of the population are using meths/P now.

We have had an employee complete the training for meth/P detection, and follow this with a presentation to us of the affect and widespread use of this drug in our community, eliminating risk and liability for homeowners and investors alike the signs to look for and then the associated costs for testing

and follow-up testing and de-contamination of meth from the premises.

In extreme cases premises have had to be demolished.

If ever a saying was made for something, it would

have to be asparagus and ‘good things take time’.

In my mind, there’s no doubt that asparagus falls into the category of a good thing. And they certainly take time! Plant asparagus now and you won’t even know for a few years whether they’re going to produce a good crop. But if you get it right, you’ll be rewarded with fresh, tasty asparagus for years to come.

If you know you’re going to be at your property for at least several (but hopefully more) years and you’ve got the space to dedicate an area for growing, then plant your asparagus now. The quicker you get them into the ground the sooner you’ll be able to reap the rewards.

There are different varieties of asparagus around, but Mary Washington is one of the more common and popular varieties. It’s an heirloom plant and great for the garden because it’s extremely hardy and produces tender, thick and straight spears – and lots of them!

For the average family you’ll need to plant no less than 10 asparagus plants – probably more like 15.

You can grab your Mary

Washington asparagus plants from most garden centres or even online.

Now to work out where to plant. Every plant should be grown about 40cm apart from the next. So for around 15 plants you’ll need space of about 1.5-2m x 1.5-2m – depending on how you decide to plot out your garden. They’re quite a messy plant (with all their fern-like fronds) so it’s often better to plant in a couple of rows than just one).

Ideally you want to plant in a patch of soil that is more alkaline

than acid and in full sun. It’s also very important that the soil is well-draining otherwise in winter the crowns of your plants will rot.

I strongly recommend digging in a whole lot of compost and manure as deep as you possibly can before you start planting. Lastly, make sure there are no weeds anywhere. I keep harping on about the time it takes to harvest your first crop but I really can’t stress how important it is to get the basics (like your soil condition) right before you plant something that is going to take so long to appear.

Dig a little hole and place each plant around 40cm apart from the next. Cover the roots with soil and keep the plants well watered.

Now comes the test of your patience. To ensure your asparagus bed produces good quality spears for years to come it’s vital you allow the plants to develop well during the first three years. Each year they will die back in winter and send up new shoots in spring. These are the spears you can start harvesting in the fourth year - hopefully for many years to come!
