Ramblings from the Reverend

by Rev’d Canon David Child When we tell or retell the most important stories of our lives there are always a few details we can’t leave out. It may be the name of the hotel where you stayed on your honeymoon or the name of the hospital where your children were born. There’s always some detail however insignificant you can’t leave out. The story of the birth of Jesus is no different. We know the story – Mary, Joseph, Bethlehem, the angels, shepherds, the three wise men. We know there was no room in the inn and we know that Jesus was laid in a manger. It would have been an important story without any of those things because at the heart of the story is that ‘God loves us so much that he became one of us, so that we might love God and one another’. Now a manger is just a feeding trough for the animals. So it was the most unexpected resting place for a newly born baby. But as we remember that manger we also remember that there was no room in the inn. But maybe there was room in the inn after all but the innkeeper when he saw the unmarried couple decided that he didn’t want anything to do with them. Or maybe, even if all the rooms were full, no one could be bothered to find some place for a woman who was 9 months pregnant and about to give birth. And so they didn’t and so we don’t know or remember the name of the Inn. It could have become the most famous inn in the world if they’d only found room for that little baby. Jesus still comes into our world. Christmas still happens. It didn’t happen just once, it happens all the time. God knocks at our doors and asks us if there is room in our lives for him. Sometimes we look out and we don’t like what we see or we don’t like what it would mean to let Jesus into our lives and so we close the door. But sometimes, even when we don’t really want to or even when we’re not sure, we do open that door. And that matters because Christmas tells not just what happened two thousand years ago, it teaches us what God is trying to do in us in this world. Because that baby in the manger will grow up to show us what God is really like and to tell us that yes there is room for God in our lives and that yes we can be part of what God is doing in this world. So this Christmas open the door of your heart and let Jesus in, read the story of his life, I would suggest in Mark’s gospel, it takes less than two hours, and learn his Christmas message of loving God and loving your neighbour. With every blessing for Christmas and the New Year,!David!

Baptism & Holy Communion in St Mary’s !It has always been recognised that it’s through Baptism you become a full member of the Christian Church. In the early church young children would take Communion but for most church goers Confirmation has traditionally been the gateway to Holy Communion. From Nov 27th this year and throughout the Church in Wales this has changed and Baptism will be the only requirement to be able to take Holy Communion. All the Baptised, including children at their parent’s discretion will therefore be able to receive Communion. Under civil law under 5s should receive bread only. Over 5s may receive wine as well with parents consent. That should help young children and their families to feel more fully welcomed and included into church life with Holy Communion as a natural part in sustaining faith. This means that if you have not been confirmed but have been baptised you may receive Holy Communion at our Services including Christmas. Why not make this a very special Christmas for you and members of your family who have been baptised. With every blessing, David

Mary Lewis We were sorry to hear of the sudden death of Mary Lewis. She had lived in Overton over 50 years, coming to the Argoed farm as the wife of Les. She loved the countryside and was a great supporter of the various activities in the village. Those of us who visited to buy eggs or sell poppies were enchanted by her pretty walled garden which she delighted in; she would always ask you in. She loved to chat and was interested in people and their news. Her kitchen reflected the seasons and particularly Harvest time with pumpkins and fruit outside the back door. Always gentle in manner she would ask your opinion on the home-made wine or latest recipe and listen. "True" she would say, "very true”. As a country person, she was a very diligent committee member of the W.I. She worked, often behind the scenes, unobtrusive but effective and important. Despite personal tragedy her stoical, self-contained and uncomplaining way was an inspiration to us all. Mary was an oasis in the frenzy and rush of modern life. She achieved her wish to stay in the farm house with its views of the countryside of which she was part and drew her strength from. All who knew her, many who have helped her over the years, will have their own special memories. Mary was an inspiration and will be sadly missed.

Congratulations to Lucas, on receiving his black belt 1st Dan from Tracy Fry. He started Tae Kwon Do at St Mary's School when he was in Nursery, and has continued to attend the After-school school club. I can't believe it has been 5 years !!!

School News It’s been a busy term so far St Mary’s. We’ve enjoyed a variety of class trips to support our learning – here is news about a couple of them. !On the 4th of November, Year 6 embarked on a class trip to Stockport on an evacuation experience. We dressed up as evacuees for the day and packed a lunch based on the type of food children would have had as their lunch during the period. Some of us were even brave enough to pack some Spam sandwiches! !On arrival we were greeted by two lovely ladies, a WVS lady called Mrs Hodkinson and her housekeeper, Mrs Grundy. We learned about make-do and mend and helping with tasks around the house, which would be essential if you were to be evacuated, because no-one would want a lazy child! We also learned about essential survival skills like how to equip your gas mask quickly; we actually got to wear practice gas masks so we would know what it would feel like to be wearing one! We got to hear an Air Raid

siren (also known as a Moaning Minnie or Wailing Willie) so we would know what to expect if an air raid actually happened. !After a delicious luncheon and a quick trip to the gift shop we ventured forth into a real life air raid shelter. They were the largest purpose-built civilian air raid shelters in the country and could accommodate up to 6,500 people! The class split into two groups and made our way around the tunnels singing genuine WW2 songs like Sir Winston Churchill’s favourite, “Run Rabbit Run” and the cheeky rhyme, about Mr Adolf Hitler; “Who’s That knocking on the window, who’s that knocking on the door if its Hitler let him in and we’ll put him in the bin and there won’t be any Hitler any more, hurrah!!” This was a rhyme that that many of the children, family and friends used to uplift their spirits so the war didn’t seem too depressing. This would not just uplift their spirits but as everybody sang these rhymes it would minimise the sound of the bombs that fell and the little ones could join in too which would keep them occupied. !

We also took a fascinating look at the shelter’s toilets, obviously unused now, but these lavatories had an automatic flushing system, quite advanced for their time. Overall, the class trip was hugely successful because we learned more about evacuation and the information we acquired during this marvellous experience is helping us in our class work. We would recommend visiting sometime. !Year 1 and 2 Class Trip As you have perhaps realised, this term has been a busy one, but not just for Year 6, Years 1 and 2 also had an exciting adventure, visiting the Manchester Museum of Science. All of Year 1 and 2 attended and a couple of brave mums joined them, with the teachers, on an adventure of science and engineering. Interviewing the pupils, we discovered a favourite part of their experience had been watching two shows about bikes and trains. Tom recalled, “It was fun and I enjoyed the moving train wheels. It was an adventure!” Pearl from Year 2 told us, “My favourite part was probably when we learned about the steam trains.” Maisey from Year 1 had a great time telling us, “We saw a big train and it was fabulous!” It sounded like great fun hearing the children talk about colour mixers, disco dancing and skeleton bikes. It was great hear they had so much fun whilst learning about transport and things that move. !Remembrance Service Thanks As you may have read last month, St Mary’s School, along with the Royal British Legion, held a Remembrance Service on 11th November. We appreciate everyone who took time to join us for our service and pay respects to servicemen and women who have given their lives for others.

Dear Editor! At the White Horse we have a persistent problem with a person or person’s letting their dog urinate on the front of the pub and even worse on the front door. We would like to mention that we do have CCTV on the front of the pub, and if it carries on we will watch it back to find out who is doing it and take appropriate action, as there is no need for it.

Fish & Chips Raises Money for Lifeboats The photo shows some of those who enjoyed the fish and chip lunch in the White Horse to raise money for the R.N.L.I. which raised £200. Thanks to the 21 people who came to support the lunch and thanks especially to Kevin and Olwen for providing the delicious fish and chips. A good time was had by all that attended.

Other contributors were Betty Campbell, Beaty Roberts, Jean Hughes, Anita Brown, Sheila Williams and Mary Jones. Many thanks to all who came to view the work and gave donations. Poetry Corner As St Mary’s School Key Stage 2 has been writing poetry this term, we thought you might like to read some of our work. For this month we’ve chosen Amelia’s work: “We imagined what a day in the life of a particular shoe would be like, I chose to write in the form of a ballet shoe purely because I am a gymnast and in this type of activity I feel I am in my element. Writing this made me happy and I felt like I could express myself.” !Ballet Shoe Beauty I live on pointe, Thriving each day, Like a fuchsia feline, I elegantly swoop, The ribbons swaying resplendently. ! Constantly competing, I am sallow rose pink. Eyeing my silhouette, Of pure raven shadow. Leaping to life, and flawless grace, The stage is my beauty, ! Stepping to the beat, The spotlight reflecting eerily, From my satin stardom. I sway in picturesque movement, Ending with a blossoming pirouette; Finishing with a golden rustic win. ! Just like a stage stealer A swan whisperer A soaring survive A breath taker By Amelia, Year 6

Homeless in Overton !As we prepare for the Christmas season we hear much on the media about those around the world who are homeless. But recently something caught my eye and took me by surprise when I was doing research on the 1911 census, preparing the articles on the families of those named on the Overton War Memorial. The 1911 census for Overton (which for administrative purposes in 1911 is listed under Shropshire) is divided into 3 sections. George Goderich (a saddler of Wrexham Rd), William Gabriel of Salop Rd, (Overton’s Rural postman) and Colin Cross of Bangor Rd, (Bootmaker) were in charge of collecting the information from in all, 272 households totalling 1,196 people in the Overton parish. However what caught my eye was at the end of each section is an added list where the Overton Inspector of Police, Richard Davies, gave numbers of the Homeless persons in Overton. These homeless were not just itinerant male agricultural workers who perhaps moved from farm to farm sleeping in barns - this was families - with children but no homes. In a barn in Knolton on the night of the census were 10 homeless people, 3 married couples, one with a baby aged 1, and another couple with a daughter of 17 plus there were 2 single men. In a barn at Little Overton were 2 more homeless men. So when we talk about the “good old days” just remember that it was not that long ago that families in our village had no roof over their heads that they could call home. Editor !!!!!

This reads - “Schedule received from Richard Davies Inspector of Police of Persons found s leeping out , o f Homeless persons.” !!

Overton Protection & Preservation Society Like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis, in our case red tape, a committee has finally been formed. Stuart Horton is chairman and please contact him on 710646 if you wish to help in any way. The committee members are varied. There is an artist who's living depends on the view through the window, also an aspiring poet as well as a born and bred Overtonian and a newcomer who wishes she had come to the village years ago. Some members belong to Friends of the Earth, RSPB and such but all wish to pass onto the next generation, all that is best about rural village life and its unique community spirit. The group intends to meet regularly and pool knowledge and expertise, of which there is a wide range, in order to present the best case against the council’s most recent Local Development Plan. Work has started. Agencies have been contacted and papers written on subjects such as the relationship between mental health and wellbeing and closeness to nature. Research is also being done on our historical heritage as well as minimising the impact on the village infrastructure which an increase in housing and traffic would bring. Thank you to everybody who attended the public meeting in September. We hope to keep you informed of our progress through The Oracle. Meanwhile if you wish to help in anyway, do not hesitate to get in touch.

Successful Craft Fair !Thanks to all those who attended the Craft and Gift Fair in November. The Village Hall was able to donate £110 to the Community Council towards a Christmas Tree outside the Hall. Playgroup benefited by providing delicious refreshments and St Mary's PTA were thrilled with the money they made from the raffle. We have hosted a collection box in the Village Hall for CARIAD, the providers of our defibrillator and we recently sent £40 to them for their charity. All in all a successful afternoon. Many thanks to the stallholders for coming along with a lovely variety of crafts and gifts and our appreciation to all the customers who turned out to support the event.

The Latest Scam A few days ago I received an unsolicited email purporting to be from HMRC (Tax Office) It was addressed to my email address indicating I was entitled to a tax rebate and to click on “REFUND” (in red) to submit my request, which would then have requested my Bank Details etc ‘to pay the refund into’.
