As everyone knows, eating nutritious food and exercising are key to a healthy life, but what else can we do to ward off illness and feel our best? To celebrate World Health Day, April 7, we’ve put together an easy guide for healthy living that you can follow all year long.

First, try to consume most of your calories earlier in the day. You should also break meals into smaller portions, but eat them more frequently. Likewise, in an effort to stabilize your energy and avoid overtaxing your digestive system right before bedtime, taper off your food intake throughout the afternoon and evening. Also, remember to get most of your fiber from fruits and vegetables, as bread and other processed foods labeled “high fiber” often contain ingredients that disrupt our bodies’ natural mechanisms.

Elevate your feet above your heart three or four times a day. Doing so will improve your circulation and can help relieve muscle tension in your legs and hips.

Take care of your spine to help reduce and even prevent aches and pains. At least once a day, stand up straight and tall, then slowly bend over toward your feet, so that your back is curved. Pull your chin into your chest first, then pull your chest toward your stomach, and let your arms hang loose. After ten seconds in this position, reverse this motion to stand back up.

Go outside. A few minutes of fresh air, a change of scenery, and exposure to natural light can do wonders to boost your energy and mood. Heading outdoors is especially important if you spend any time under fluorescent light fixtures and experience eye discomfort or headaches as a result. Once you’re outside, take a brisk walk so that you breathe deeply and increase your heart rate.

Inspired to lead a healthier life at work and elsewhere? Take our April Health Challenge! All you have to do is track your daily habits, make incremental and sustainable changes, and measure improvements over time!
