TRANSCRIPT
As Peyton and I head off to our colleges
(Peyton to Penn State and me to Virginia
Tech) for the start of our freshman year, we
wanted to take this opportunity to thank the
VADA/Nova community. You ALL have
done so much for the two of us (and many
more) that we will remember forever.
I asked Peyton to give me her thoughts
about how the organization has impacted her
life-- she responded with, "When I started
with VADA/Nova, I volunteered at a couple
events a year, but spent most of my involve-
ment in competing. Over the years, however,
as my family and I got more involved we
began to make more personal connections and
were welcomed into the community. As I got
older, my family and I volunteered more
frequently and became engrained in the
chapter. It was on those days when we
volunteered that I sincerely appreciated all
that VADA/Nova had done for me and my
family. Our time with VADA/Nova not only
brought my family closer together, but also
enabled personal growth in character and gave
us the opportunities to make life-long friends."
Peyton and I would not have become such
close friends if it weren't for this fabulous
organization. I have been taught to be inde-
pendent and accomplish tasks in a timely
manner as well as work with a team to
maximize the productivity. If I had to pick the
most valuable trait learned through VADA/
Nova, it would be my comfort level around
adults. Being surrounded by adults forced me
to behave in a mature, professional manner
and take on any responsibility they gave me at
shows...and that was no easy task for an 8 year
old. We all know those tests weren't going to
run themselves! (I still love to run
tests!) I believe I can speak for both
Peyton and myself when I say that
we've acquired skills and traits that we
will use throughout the remainder of
our lives!
In closing, to all the young mem-
bers of VADA/Nova-- I believe it
would be in your best interest to step
up and take advantage of ALL the op-
portunities this organization has to
offer; everyone wants to see you
succeed! Thank you again and we will
be back to volunteer whenever we are
home!
Much appreciation,
Alex Jackson and Peyton Morris

SUMMARY MINUTES
VADA/Nova Board Meeting
Aug. 11, 2014– Morven Park Lounge
The meeting commenced at 7:20 p.m.
There were thirteen Board members present and three were
excused. There was one guest.
The June minutes were accepted by acclimation by the Board.
Treasurer’s Report:
The reconciled balance in our main operating account is $71,247.74
and in the special account is $6,472.68
Dilly passed out the financial report from the Youth Team Show,
which showed a profit of just over $500. In addition, we are expect-
ing an additional donation from one of the participating GMOs of
$125. Since it is our goal to merely keep this show from losing
money, this was viewed as a very positive outcome.
Dilly & Barb are working together to put together a spread sheet
capturing historical financial information from our shows so we can
more easily compare expenses and income from show to show and
year to year.
Licensed Shows:
Dianne Boyd reported that entries for September are starting to come
in. We have 4 judges hired, so Dianne will watch the entries carefully
and let Alison know as soon as possible if we need to hire a 5th judge.
Also, Morven Park is going to get back to us with costs in the event
we want to rent some of the temporary stalls that will be set up on the
premises for the hunter show that will follow ours. Kelly, who is the
volunteer recruiter for the show, said that thus far she is very light on
volunteers. She will send out another e-blast, and will also email all
of last year’s volunteers to see if any of them would be willing to vol-
unteer again this year.
Youth Team:
Overall, the show went really well. Entries were a little lighter than
in some past years, but by using all 5 rings/judges, we were able to
end all rings on both days at a reasonable time. As usual, the kids had
a blast and outdid themselves with their costumes for the awards
ceremonies and stall decorations. The Friday night pizza party was a
huge success, as were the 2 demos (a MFS ride and a long lining
demo) by Julio Mendoza. The Board shared some ideas for how we
can better lay out the food in the classroom to lessen some of the
congestion.
Schooling Shows:
The August 2-ring show at Morven was on the small side, but all who
participated loved the venue and we had positive feedback on the
judges as well. There are currently 20+ rides thus far for the
September schooling show at Looking Glass Farm, but the closing
date is still a bit away.
It was noted that while entries in our schooling shows were on the
light side this year (we think because of the number of barns holding
shows) it does appear that evening shows seem to be very popular and
might be something we want to think about offering next year.
We also decided that we would stick to the same awards as last year
for the October schooling show at Compass Rose, where costumes are
encouraged.
VADA/Nova members can

Membership/Newsletter: Barb said that there were about 311
members to date.
Clinics:
Plans are proceeding for the Jacquie Brooks clinic which will be
held on Nov 1 & 2 at Morven Park. Sheli made a motion that was
seconded by Diann Carpenter that VN subsidize the clinic up for
$2500 and also use the $900 grant we receive each year from
VADA to keep the rider and auditor costs as low as possible. The
motion passed unanimously. Rider fees will be $250 for a single
lesson or $450 for both days for VN members, with lessons being
$390 for non-members. Information for rider applications and
auditor registration will be posted on the website.
Misc:
Alison reported that VADA recently made a $12,000 donation to
the Virginia Horse Center which was very well received and is
getting us very good press.
The Board was asked to begin thinking about suitable prizes for
our year end awards,
Alison talked about her desire to create a Planning Committee to
focus on how VN can expand, improve our shows and other
activities and attract new members. The Board was asked to think
about this and if anyone was interested in serving on the commit-
tee, which would start work after the show season concluded, to
let her know.
The meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Michelle King for Diann Landau

Our member of the month for September is Debbie Meade. Debbie, who
has been a VADA/Nova member since 2011, lives with her family in a
rural part of western Fairfax County on 5 acres. She has been married for
over 20 years to Chuck who is a computer engineer and a very tolerant
horse husband. She has three sons but will soon be an empty nester.
Debbie has been riding on/off since she was a teenager. She got her first horse at 15 and owned her 24 years until she died at the age
of 33. She rode hunter/jumper in high school and college but rode very little after that once she started working and having kids. After her
mare died, she waited 7 years before deciding to take start lessons again and get another horse. Debbie currently has a 20 year Thoroughbred gelding named "By the Grace of God" who she adopted 7 years ago from the Mid-Atlantic
Horse Rescue (MAHR). Debbie fell in love with him "on the internet" against all common sense – since she hadn't ridden in years and had
just started taking lessons again. She convinced a trainer friend of hers to go with her to Maryland to see him (her friend spent the whole trip
telling her what a bad idea this was). They both rode him, and Debbie had him vetted, and then adopted him. Once she realized that Grace
had no interest in jumping (and neither did Debbie), they did some trail riding and then started dressage in 2011 with Candy Allen, as her
instructor. At her first lesson with Candy, Debbie announced that she was going to ride Intro A and B at an upcoming Morven Park show
because "it is just walking and trotting". To this day she wondered why Candy didn't resign as her instructor back then ☺ !!! According to Debbie: “my horse and I have been properly humbled over the years by the dressage
judges - and Candy has been methodically and patiently transforming us ever since.” Grace and
Debbie are currently showing at Training level, and are getting ready to start showing a TR MFS test this
fall that Candy designed. Above all, dressage has taught her that there is joy in the journey, it’s not all
about the destination. Debbie is a software engineer who has gone into management, working full-time as the software
technical director at 3 Phoenix in Chantilly VA, which is a small, innovative company who focuses
mainly on defense work. She has a 6 year old female Sheltie named Laila who was adopted from the
Northern Virginia Sheltie Rescue (NVSR). Debbie likes to walk and jog with Laila and also likes to read
and spend time with her family. When asked about her favorite volunteer job she replied: “I really enjoy being the ring steward. I
know how stressful it can be to ride the tests, so I try to remind the riders to relax and to have fun as they
are entering the arena. If their tests don't go well, I try to encourage them, since I know the feeling ☺

The VADA/Nova schooling show at Morven Park on August 10th went off very smoothly and the day
was very enjoyable. The weather was lovely and once again the Morven staff did a wonderful job of getting
everything set up and watering the rings in the middle of the day. Thank you to all concerned. Congratulations
also to all the competitors for their efforts.
As always, the show depended on volunteers and we would like to thank them all:
Kathy Jayne and Eva Pede, scribes; Laureen Megan and
Sandra Brannock, runners; Nancy Noble, Ken Hinson and
Cathy Scholten, scorers; Emily Mason and Michelle Lachner, ring
stewards. Thank you to Laura Celia for taking on the big job of
Secretary and also answering all of first time Manager questions.
Our final thanks go to our two judges, Mary Callan and
Angela Voss, for helping to make this a successful show.
editor’s note: VADA/Nova gives a heartfelt thank you to Amy and Caroline for
being first time managers. We hope that it was a positive experience and that they
might consider doing it again in the future. ☺

VADA Shel Gafford Memorial Award for
EXCELLENCE IN SPORTMANSHIP
Nomination deadline for 2014 Awards: October 1, 2014
For anyone not fortunate enough to have known Shel, he was not only a gifted horseman and successful competitor,
but also a truly good sport and dedicated advocate to VADA. Shel was a seasoned competitor, having won the Gold and
Silver Individual Medals in his last two years as a Young Rider at the NAYRC. He always rode to win, but never at the
expense of his horse or another rider. Rather than “psyching” his fellow competitors, Shel was more likely to offer a helping
hand or wish them luck. Furthermore, Shel was a tireless supporter of VADA. He served as President during some of our
Association’s most difficult and trying times. It is largely due to his diplomacy and tenacity that VADA exists as it does
today.
It is this spirit of unselfish good sportsmanship and generous volunteerism, which were so much a part of Shel’s
nature, that VADA wishes to encourage and reward. If you are aware of a VADA members who is:
1) Actively involved in any aspect of competition and/or VADA activities (eg. Rider, owner, trainer, coach, show
mom/dad, spouse, offspring, VADA Board Member, VADA volunteer), and 2) who consistently exhibits the
characteristics of good sportsmanship and unselfish support of VADA, please nominate that person for the
Shel Gafford Award. Include in your nomination the person’s name, chapter affiliation, and a brief statement
(200 words or less) explaining why you feel your nominee is deserving of this award.
Nominations must be received by October 1. The slate of nominations will then be sent to each chapter President who
shall, using the method they determine, poll the members of their chapter and select their chapter’s choice for the award. In
the event of a tie, the VADA Board of Directors shall select the winning nominee from the two candidates.
The recipient will be notified that he/she will receive an award at the VADA banquet in February and will be encouraged to
attend. The recipient will receive a special award and a check for $250.

It’s time to start thinking about renewing
your membership for the new year!
Why so early?
VADA/Nova’s membership year parallels that of USDF
so everyone’s membership expires November 30, 2014.
USDF requires the first list of renewals/new members by
early November.
Since we are a chapter of VADA, all membership lists must first go to our VADA
membership secretary who then compiles all 8 chapters and sends them to USDF.
So-the earlier we can get our lists to her the better.
Do you plan on showing at a Licensed show next year
and need to be a GMO member? Then all the more reason to join early.
It sometimes takes several months for USDF to process the membership
information. Please don’t wait until the show date is near
to send in your membership.
If USDF does not have your membership on file the day of the show,
then you will have to pay a non-refundable non member fee.
We are continuing our Early Bird Special.
Send in your membership application, postmarked by Oct. 15, 2014 and
pay only $50. After Oct. 15, the fee is $60.
Additional family members are still only $25 each, no matter
when the application is sent.
The membership year runs from Dec. 1, 2014 to Nov. 30, 2015
So don’t delay.
Beat the holiday rush and
send in your application now!

Confessions of a Volunteer Ring Steward-by Sally O’Dwyer USDF Youth Team Competition—Move Over Steffan Peters!
VADA/Nova’s Youth Team Competition for riders 21 years old and younger was held July 26/27 at Morven Park. In this competition, the riders compete in teams against riders of similar age and ability. On Sunday, Sheli King and I tag teamed it and managed the dressage seat equitation classes. In dressage seat equitation, the competitors of each class enter the ring together. The
rider’s position, seat and the correct use and effect of the aids are judged. The judge asks the riders to walk, trot, change rein, etc. The riders have to wear back numbers—which added a bit of challenge for us ring stewards, but nothing we couldn’t handle!
The morning began with the youngest children and the smallest ponies in the Intro Level Divisions. The children were adorable! I know kids hate being called “adorable”, but they really were. Riders were beribboned in hair bows and ponies were smartly turned
out. The mounts had great names, like “Sugar and Spice” and “No Nonsense.” For every child, there was a proud mom or dad alongside loaded down with cameras, water bottles, and horse supplies. They were super supportive and applauded with great enthusiasm when their competitor received an award. And there was good news all around—all competitors received medals.
The children were trying their best and were very kind to one another. They were polite and eager to follow the rules. And, they
were a talented bunch. Even though some of the competitors were small, they were determined. As a former Shetland pony rider, I can attest to the fact that if you can ride a pony, you can ride anything!
The coaches reminded the riders to smile when the entered the ring. After the class, the riders lined up in the ring. The judge took time to talk with each one of them, providing tips and upbeat feedback. I asked an 8 year old competitor how her class went and she proudly exclaimed that she had done well using her corners! The size of the riders and their mounts got larger as the morning wore
on and we came to the training level classes. Children in bows made way for nicely turned out teenagers on horses. The last class was a first level competition, with two competitors. They were so good, they both were awarded first place. VADA/Nova should
be proud for hosting a show for tomorrow’s dressage superstars!
