Whole Community: Introducing Communities of Faith to People with Intellectual and Developmen-tal Disabilities by David Morstad

The story of peo-ple with intellec-tual and develop-mental disabilities is often unknown or misunderstood by people in faith c o m m u n i t i e s . Whole Community

provides an introduction to the disabilities definition and history, and an overview of current issues in ethics, cultural perceptions and public policy. Through personal stories and often-surprising data, a new framework for relationship emerges -- one that reaches beyond mercy to mutuality and chooses to see disability as diversity rather than deficit.

David Morstad has steeped his book, Whole Community, in years of rich experiences, relationships, and wisdom. The result is an outstanding book that takes the deep and important questions and convictions about living as one body together in Christ and turns that into practical and accessible direction for our Christian communities.

---Barbara J. Newman, author of Autism and Your Church and Accessible Gospel, Inclusive Worship

Whole Community is an excellent resource for faith lead-ers and congregations interested in improving access and inclusion for people with disabilities. Morstad explores a journey toward relationship through which congregations benefit from the gifts and talents people with disabilities bring to the community of faith.

After March 1, Price increases to $255PASSPORT kids is a 4 day, 3 night Children’s Camp for those who have completed 3rd – 6th grades. It is filled with fun faith-building programming and hands-on mis-sions education. The theme this year is FEARLESS. Using 1 Corinthians 16:13–14 as a theme verse and the outline for the week, campers will be challenged as they dig into this passage (and others) to explore what Paul meant when he called us all to live a faith that is based in love, not in fear. When we are FEARLESS we can LOVE MORE and FEAR LESS.

Susie Reeder’s and Gloria Ginn’s Wednesday night classes will end on February 27. If you’ve been attending one of those classes OR are looking for a class to join, Dr. Ginn will begin Revival, God’s Challenge To His Church Today in the Chapel on March 6. Gloria Ginn will also begin a new class, How To Share Your Testimony, on the same night in Room B1051. Gloria’s class will help you develop and share your testimony concentrating on your own personal story. Another new group starting is Younique Primer. The 6-Week Primer is designed to give you an accessible way to engage Gospel-Centered Life Design. This journey leads people through an ex-ploration of the life of David to help you discover the value and importance of knowing your life calling. The class will meet in Room B1045 and cost is $10 for the participant book. You can also join one of these ongo-ing classes: Armor of God (B1044), Mental Health Is-sues Facing Christians Today (B1046), DivorceCare (B1022), or GriefShare (Small Dining Room). Books are still available in the Church Office.

Pastor’s Perspective The older I get, the more I treasure the moments we have together with our

children and grandchildren. Our son’s 2-week R&R from Afghanistan earlier this month was no exception. Josh timed his R&R to hopefully be home for the birth of his third son. The plan worked beautifully! He flew into RDU on Monday evening, the day before Amber’s due date. Chase was born Wednesday morning. Josh’s sister and twin brother both made trips to Fayetteville to see him and the new baby. It was a busy two weeks that flew by all too quickly. But we all have new memories of our time together.

One of those memories is the first thing Josh’s 3-year-old son said when he saw his dad for the first time in months. Amber had kept the boys up past their bed-time so they could see their daddy before they went to sleep. They knew he was coming home, but they didn’t know when. The boys were playing with cars on our living room floor when their dad walked into the room to surprise them. Caleb (3) saw him first and just stared at him without saying a word. When Carson (5) finally looked up, he shouted, “Hi, daddy!” I had to prompt them both to come give him a hug. They rushed into his arms, bringing tears to my eyes. It was Caleb’s first words that I wasn’t prepared for. He still hadn’t said anything to his dad when he looked at me and Gaye and asked, “Does daddy have to go back?” Two minutes with his dad and the first question he is processing in his 3-year-old mind is whether his daddy is back for good… or not.

We all felt the weight of the answer to that question last week. My other son and I picked Josh up at his home to take him back to the airport. There were hugs, quick expressions of love, and, of course, a few tears. “Daddy has to go,” my son said. And we were gone. My grandson’s question two weeks earlier was playing in my head. I’ve often thought about how Jesus’ mother must have felt as the time of His departure drew near. The Bible says, “Near the cross of Jesus stood His moth-er.” Do you have to go, son? Do you have to leave this way?

I am already looking forward to the day our son comes home… for good. And even more to the day our Savior returns to take us home… for good. No more sad-ness. No more tears. No more separation. Time together. Forever!

See you Sunday! ~ John
