But how an effect can be related to an architectural masterpiece?

THE SITE WAS CHOSEN, ON A FORMER WHARF WITH PORT AND INDUSTRIAL USE ON A CURVE OF THE NERVIÓN.


THE CHOSEN SITE REPRESENTED RECOVERY OF THE BANKS OF THE RIVER FOR THE CITY, AND ATTRACTED TOURISTS RESULTING THE REDEVELOPING FOR CULTURE AND LEISURE.


The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was built between October 1993 and October 1997 .


GEHRY’S PROPOSAL FOR THE SITE ON THE NERVION RIVER ULTIMATELY INCLUDED FEATURES THAT EMBRACE BOTH THE IDENTITY OF THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM AND ITS NEW HOME IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY.


Gehry is a celebrity architect, and his buildings attract millions of tourists.

In fact, before arriving in Bilbao, many of the visitors to this museum would have a hard time naming a single artist whose work is displayed in this museum—but anyone can name the museum’s designer.

It is an odd fact for a museum to outshine the work of those housed in it.


Visitors to The Louvre go to see the Mona Lisa (and, one hopes, to also take the time to admire the thousands of other masterpieces housed there). Tourists go to the Accademia in Florence to see Michelangelo’s David, not the Accademia building itself. But in the Guggenheim Bilbao, Gehry created an icon for the proud city of Bilbao, single-handedly making Bilbao a tourist destination for the millions who wanted to see this new wonder of the Post-Modernist world.

An Architectural Competition Led To The Selection Of California-based Canadian-American Architect Frank Gehry For The Project That Was Going To Become An attraction For Spain’s Tourism industry.


Frank Gehry Is Known For His Use Of Unorthodox Materials And Inventive Forms, And His Sensitivity To The Urban Environment. Research and Presentation by: Syeda.Q


Note the fish sculpture behind Gehry. It has got something to do with the Guggenheim.


Gehry’s Work Is Difficult To Define. He Might Be Considered A Deconstructionist, Because His Work Transcends The Prevailing Theories About How Buildings Could And Should Be Constructed. He Is Iconoclastic, Using New Technologies Such As Computer Software And Titanium, To Create Structures That Are Physically Beyond What Had Been Made In The Past. His Work Does Not Adhere To Existing Theories Or Movements, Making Him One Of The Great Revolutionaries Of The Art World.

Once Inside The Hall, Visitors Access The Atrium, The Real Heart Of The Museum And One Of The Signature Traits Of Frank Gehry's Architectural Design.


With Curved Volumes And Large Glass Curtain Walls That Connect The Inside And The Outside, The Atrium Is An Ample Space Flooded With Light And Covered By A Great Skylight.


Sinuous Forms In The Atrium Make For Enchanting Compositions

The Three Levels Of The Building Are Organized Around The Atrium And Are Connected By Means Of Curved Walkways, Titanium And Glass Elevators, And Staircases.


Also An Exhibition Space, The Atrium Functions As An Axis For The 20 Galleries, Some Orthogonally Shaped And With Classical Proportions And Others With Organic, Irregular Lines. The Play With Different Volumes And Perspectives Generates Indoor Spaces Where Visitors Do Not Feel Overwhelmed


Its Largest Gallery Is Traversed By Bilbao’s Puente De La Salve, A Vehicular Bridge Serving As One Of The Main Gateways To The City.

With A Total 24,000 M2(260,000 Sq Ft), Of Which 11,000 M2 (120,000 Sq Ft) Are Dedicated To Exhibition Space, It Had More Exhibition Space Than The Three Guggenheim Collections In New York And Venice Combined At That Time.


The Nine Galleries Are Irregularly Shaped And Can Be Identified From The Outside By Their Swirling Organic Forms And Titanium Cladding.

The Largest Gallery Measures 30 Meters Wide And 130 Meters Long (98 Ft × 427 Ft).

In addition to the gallery space and a separate office building, the Museum has

a visitor orientation room, Zero Espazioa;

an auditorium seating 300;

a store/bookstore;

a cafeteria;

And

two restaurants: a bistro and a one Michelin star haute cuisine restaurant.

Two Materials Used In The Building, Limestone And Glass, Harmonize Perfectly, Achieving An Architectural Design With A Great Visual Impact


In 1992 Juan Ignacio Vidarte, Now Director General Of The Guggenheim Bilbao, Was Formally Appointed To Oversee The Development Of The Project And To Supervise The Construction.


Groundbreaking Took Place In 1993 And In 1997 A Gala Dinner And Reception, Attended By An International Audience And Spain’s Queen Sofia And King Juan Carlos I, Celebrated The Inauguration Of The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.


The Building Has Been Hailed As A "Signal Moment In The Architectural Culture", Because It Represents "One Of Those Rare Moments When Critics, Academics, And The General Public Were All Completely United About Something.

About 5,000 Residents Of Bilbao Attended A Preopening Extravaganza Outside The Museum On The Night Preceding The Official Opening, Featuring An Outdoor Light Show And Concerts.

The Numerous Artists, Architects, Journalists, Politicians, Filmmakers, And Historians That Visited The Building Site In The Mere Four Years Of Its Construction Anticipated The Success Of The Venture.

Technologically Speaking, Gehry’s Ability To Create Such A Spontaneous, Organic Design Is Due To A New Computer Advancement, CATIA.

CATIA Is Computer Aided Three Dimensional Interactive Application.

Developed In The 1980s, The Software Allows Architects To Manipulate Three-dimensional Solid Models, Permitting The Freedom To Create Curved Forms Where Architects Of The Past Dealt Primarily In Angles.

The Software Also Facilitates The Engineering Aspect Of Architecture, Processing Data And Integrating Contemporary Materials To Calculate The Mathematics Of Construction.

Titanium is a low-density, extremely strong corrosion-resistant metal that provides a lighter, more maneuverable alternative to steel, without the sacrifice of strength.

The Gleaming Titanium Tiles That Sheathe Most Of The Building Like Giant Herring Scales Are Said To Have Been Inspired By The Architect’s Childhood Fascination With Fish.


For the outer skin of the building, the architect chose titanium after ruling out other materials and seeing the behavior of a titanium sample pinned outside his office.


The Finish Of The Approx. 33,000 Extremely Thin Titanium Sheets Provides A Rough & Organic Effect, Adding To The Material's Color Changes Depending On The Weather & Light Conditions.


Gehry could afford to let his inner artist loose because the CATIA software overcame the restrictions that had held architects of past generations in check.

The focus on artistry also kept external political and business interests at bay, the interference of which could muck up the process of creating such a monumental building.

CATIA was originally designed and is still used in the makings of planes, i-e it’s the software for aerospace industry.
