Site The proposed building site is one of most exciting locations in the region. It is characterized by its proximity to both the harbour and a natural green terrain which is rare in the city. Various urban activities including but not limited to market plaza adjacent to the site is also a great potential to activate the site to be one of the most vibrant urban space in the city. It could also act as a bridging element for existing quality urban space like Esplanadi and Tähtitorninvuoren puisto. Instead of a stand alone building, the facilities should cater possible urban activities in different scales, from causal city walk, cycling to large scale performance and assembly. Cruise terminal next door will also provide convenient access to tourist as an attractive destination in the region. The site is physically well connect to other parts of the city and the world by air, land and water transport. The site is well connected by roads, pedestrian and cycling

network, and most importantly the tram system which provide an eco-friendly means of transport around the greater city of Helsinki. The close proximity to the port terminal is also an advantage to provide alternative transport route for visitors and art pieces logistics as well. Synergy between existing museum networks in the city can then be established by its convenient transportation.

Design ConceptStrategy of enlivening cities by iconic art museum and gallery has been proven successful through several Guggenheim in different places. However, in turn of another decades in the future the art scene will be gradually changed due to new emerging medium. Art exhibitions will no longer a passive activity but an act of participation. The new Guggenheim facilities should be more experimental to cater and inspire the change. The museum will be recognized not merely by its appearance

but the unique visitors actual experience and activities that shapes the over form of the museum. Modern museums are mostly designed as an iconic building as a landmark for tourist attraction. In urban context, museums are individual and independent landmarks. Although Guggenheim Museums in the world are all iconic attraction, a new museum typology is proposed in Helsinki. Rather than a museum that people from the city travel into, the concept of a moving museum going around the city is introduced. Using the tram as media, the Guggenheim Helsinki goes into the city and connects other museums and forms a cultural trail. In building context, art exhibitions normally take place in a physical enclosure. Considering the site resting on a harbour side near piers and terminals, idea as an Art Port is suggested. Art spaces are broken down into modular capsules, like containers, at which access flow in fluidity between the capsules.

GUGGENHEIM is one of the most celebrated foundation for its variety of art collections and effort on promoting art related activities worldwide. GUGGENHEIM galleries and museums across different continents are also famous for their avant garde and iconic architectural design in its era which set high standard in the realm. The new GUGGENHEIM facilities in Helsinki- a city with both long established art culture and active frontier in art creation- will set a new height in both architecture design and visitors experiences as well as catalysing idea exchange in art industry.

The proposed museum can be mainly divided into 4 areas, Civic realm on ground floor, permanent exhibition galleries in basement, “Cocoon” type exhibition capsules and the administration block.

The Civic Realm Ground level is designed as a free penetration area as visitors can approach the site from different direction. Towards the north a water feature pond is located to greet visitors from the Market Square. An open plaza “Civic Realm” is reserved outside the entrance to the museum. It could be used as a space for various outdoor activities. such as open cinema. An “Artist Village” is located adjacent to pedestrian road at the western side of the site. The collective studio and workshop spaces of the village provide platform for local and international artists to promote their works to different visitor groups. Most of the vehicular access to the museum is located underground to help maintaining smooth pedestrian accessibility to the site.

THE OPEN ARRANGEMENT OF GROUND FLOOR PROGRAMMES ENABLES FREE PEDESTRIAN ACCESS ACROSS THE SITE AND THE PROPOSED URBAN PLAZA- THE CIVIC REALM.

The CocoonsA new exhibition model named “Cocoon” is proposed for the facility. Cocoons are relatively smaller mobile exhibition units. The Art trellis is the main structure supporting Cocoons similar to a storage rack. Cocoons can be mobiliized and moved around by hoisting system. It is also flexible for mounting fabric or screens for promotion or digital projections. Flexible arrangement of these Cocoons units is possible according to different exhibition needs. They could be combined to form a larger exhibition unit. The Art Corridor in between

Cocoons acts as circulation bridge, providing access to the Cocoon. The open arrangement of both exhibition units and the circulation route provide unique experience within the context of the Port of Helsinki. The Cocoons can also be used as satellite exhibition space around the city. Thanks for the tram system, these Cocoons could be altered to become moving unit that can be attached to tram and travel around the city. Size of the Cocoon unit has been optimized for this purpose. Unique art creation project and dedicated exhibition is anticipated with the use of the Cocoons.

The system is also a response to the fast changing art scene nowadays., Tram route 2 & 3 is a popular line both for visitors and residents. It connects landmarks, galleries and museums in the heart of Helsinki. To encourage visitors to the Artist Square, an extension of the current route is introduced to go into the facility and a tram stop is provided. Thus tram the daily transport, becomes the media between the Guggenheim and the city by promoting art to the city and bringing people to the facility for enjoyment of urban activities and public spaces.

Exhibition galleriesExhibition galleries in basement provide ideal place for different permenant artwork exhibition and is the starting point of the visitor journey. Indirect skylights allow diffused lighting to the basement galleries while undulating landscape is formed on the ground plate for public activities above. Everyone are free to sit or sleep on the sloped or stepping skylight. Supporting facilities like office, locker and cloakroom, lavatories and art

storage are also located on basement to sustain daily operation of the facility. Carpark and art loading area is also provided at basement and a large lifting platform is allowed for sending Cocoons to the ground level.

Administration BlockVisitors can reach the administration block on the opposite side of the facilities at the end of their journey. Museum shop, cafe and restaurant are

on the upper floors of administration block where visitors can observe a panoramic view of the harbour. A sky walk pathway is provided on the roof which extends and connects to the adjacent Tähtitorninvuoren puisto. Lifts from ground level to skywalk open 24/7 to public for the convenience of residents, joggers or bikers from Tähtitorninvuoren puisto.
