This guide is part of the Project “Development of Competitive Tourism Products for the Integrated Iguassu-Misiones Touristic Route. Component 1: Moisés Santiago Bertoni Scientific Monument.”, executed by the National Secretary of Tourism (SENATUR) and financed by the Structural Convergence Funds of the MERCOSUR (FOCEM).

Esta guía es parte del Proyecto “Desarrollo de Productos Turísticos Competitivos Ruta Integrada Iguassu-Misiones. Componente1: Monumento Científico Moisés Santiago Bertoni”, que ejecuta la Secretaría Nacional de Turismo de Paraguay (SENATUR) y financia el Fondo para la Convergencia Estructural del MERCOSUR (FOCEM).

El Monumento Científico Moisés Santiago Bertoni está bajo la administración de la Dirección General de Protección y Conservación de la Biodiversidad, de la Secretaría del Ambiente y, como patrimonio cultural, es administrado por la Secretaría Nacional de Cultura.

The Moisés Santiago Bertoni Scientific Monument is under the administration of the General Directorate for Protection and Conservation of Biodiversity from the Secretary of Environment. And as it is also a national cultural heritage, it is administrated hand in hand with the National Secretary of Culture .

El Monumento Científico Moisés Santiago Bertoni está en Paraguay y abarca 199 hectáreas de Selva Altoparanaense y más de 100 años de historia. A orillas del río Paraná, se integra al corredor ecológico más importante de Sudamérica y está próximo a las Cataratas de Iguazúy a las Misiones Jesuíticas de Argentina, Brasil y Paraguay.

The Moisés Santiago Bertoni Scientific Monument is located in Paraguay and it embraces 199 hectares of Alto Paraná Jungle and more than 100 years of history. It borders the Paraná River, integrating South America’s most important ecologic corridor. The Monument is next to Iguassu Falls and also to the Jesuits Missions from Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.

Todo comienza en 1893. Entonces, el suizo Moisés Bertoni llega y se adentra en esta zona boscosa, y sorprendido por su riqueza natural y cultural, decide quedarse fundar aquí una colonia que llama Puerto Bertoni.En estas tierras comparte con los Mby’a y Avá Guaraní su proyecto de vida: la ciencia sería su norte, la agricultura su medio de subsistencia.

It all begins in 1893.At this time the Swiss Moisés Bertoni arrives and gets into this woodsy area. Surprised by its natural and cultural wealth, decides to stay and found a colony that he called Puerto Bertoni. In these lands he shares his project of life with the natives Mby’a and Avá Guarani: science would be his north and agriculture his way of living.

El Ka’a he’ê o hierba dulce,la Stevia, azúcar verde;el oro verde paraguayo.Esta planta autóctona paraguaya la utilizan los guaraníes, desde la época precolombina, como edulcorante para el matey otras infusiones.En 1887, Bertoni registrala Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni, llamada así en homenaje al químico paraguayo Ovidio Rebaudi y a Moisés Bertoni.Sin calorías, 300 veces más dulce que el azúcar; el Ka’a he’ê se consume en Japón, China, Corea, Taiwán, algunos países de Europa, EE.UU, Brasil y, cómo no, en Paraguay.

Ka’a he’ê or sweet herb, Stevia, green sugar; the green Paraguayan gold. This native plant from Paraguay is usedby the Guarani since the Pre-Columbian era as a sweetenerfor the mate and other herbal infusions.In 1887, Bertoni registers Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni, named after the Paraguayan chemist Ovidio Rebaudi and himself.It is 300 times sweeter than sugar and contains no calories; Ka’a he’ê is consumed in Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, some countries of Europe, USA, Brazil and of course, in Paraguay.

LA RUTA BERTONIMoisés Bertoni introdujo especies exóticas que se aclimataron a la tierra roja del Alto Paraná. Hoy verás que siguen creciendo allí, palmitos, mandarinas, frutos orientales; árboles, desde hace un siglo, como el ciprés y la jaca.

THE BERTONI ROUTEMoisés Bertoni introduced exotic species that adapted themselves to the red land from Alto Paraná. Today you will see that they are still growing: palmettos, tangerines, oriental fruits; trees like cypress and the jaca that belong a century ago.

LA FLORA Y FAUNA DE LA SELVA ALTOPARANAENSE- 146 especies de aves, 25 propias del lugar.- 3 especies de venados, 2 de pecaríes, 2 de monos,el tapir o mboreví, en guaraní.- Grandes felinos como el yaguareté y el puma.

FLORA AND FAUNA FROM ALTO PARANÁ JUNGLE - 146 species of birds, 25 of them are natives.- 3 species of deer, 2 of peccary, 2 of monkey, and other mammals like the tapir, called mboreví in Guaraní language.- Great felines like yaguareté and the puma.

CUANDO VISITES EL MONUMENTO- Contribuye al equilibrio natural y no descargues sustanciaso residuos.- Deposita tu basura en los puntos señalados y/o recíclala.- No dañes ni asustes a los animales.- No destruyas, ni arranques plantas o flores.- Realiza tus actividades de recreación solo en las áreas señalizadas.

WHEN YOU VISIT THE MONUMENT- Contribute to the natural balance and do not throw out garbage or substances.- Deposit garbage in the indicated spots and/or recycle it.- Don’t hurt or fright the animals.- Don’t destroy or grab any plants or flowers.- Carry out your outdoor activities only in the indicated areas.
