GUIDANCE: MEANING, FUNCTION AND SCOPE Guidance - Is a way to shed light to a troubled person. - An integral part of education catered to offer assistance to individuals so that they would make intelligent decisions and adjustments in life. - In a very confusing world, where in there’s a lot of changes that takes place and due to the rapid advancement in science and technology, we get to be so confused. - Ex : teenagers, FB texting, tweeter - Media have affected our attitudes therefore our not so matured and confuse youths need assistance to make wise decisions for their self direction and self-actualization - Youths or even ordinary adults should have a better understanding about themselves so they could relate at home, in school/community. - Before, the purpose of guidance was just to give advice/ direction on choosing a career but nowadays guidance as a form of teaching intends to create opportunities for development and enforce sanction for those who incur offenses. - It doesn’t guarantee that it could solve someone’s problem instantly, because these choices are still left for that individual. We are free to make own decisions. - In elementary, I didn’t feel its relevance, in high school, I thought that if you have committed an offense the guidance will implement some disciplinary actions on you. In college, guidance office helps you, choose a suitable course for you. - And now that I’m quite old. It never occurred to me, that I would speak about my problem and seek advice from a professor. - In addition, guidance is a systematic way to one’s self- discovery dealing to self-understanding and self-direction. - It assists individuals to decide where they want to go, what they want to do, how they can best accomplish their goals. - Again it does not solve our problems but it helps depending on how open and receptive you are.

Guidance

FUNCTIONS AND SCOPE

- It consists of individuals to learn more about himself (self-knowledge) and helps to give proper directions.

- In the classroom a child does not perform well. The teacher as well as the student should understand things/ factors that hamper the student’s learning capabilities. It might have some problems that block student’s learning. Guidance will help them to make adjustments.

- With the help of guidance, hopefully few students will experience the pain of growing up instead will enjoy living. Loving and learning.

AIM AND PURPOSES OF GUIDANCE

1. Help individuals by their own effort as far as possible, to go achieve up to the level of their own capacities, to gain personal satisfaction in as many aspects of their lives as possible, and to make their maximum contribution to society.

2. Assists them to meet and solve their own problems as they arise, to make correct interpretation of facts, and arrive at wises choices and decisions,

3. Helps individuals lay a permanent lay a permanent foundation for sound, mature adjustment and

4. Assist them to have a well-balanced life:- The ultimate aim is the total development of individuals. Helps individual to achieve their

maximum potentials in all aspects. It motivates, gives, proper direction for self-actualization.

DISCIPLINE – defined as a planned series of exercises, activities or tasks aimed to arrive at the desired goal.

Ex. Student late… time management.

- Pertains to punishment given for undesirable conduct.- Ex. Suspension, deprivation of certain privileges.- Threatening - * guidance counselors have genuine interest in understanding people, respect for emotional

others, has emotional stability and matured; has various knowledge in theories of personality; therefore they are not allowed to enforce punishment/ disciplinary actions because it would be difficult for her to establish rapport and get student’s trust

- Misbehave, academic problems, homeroom teachercounseling ( done to have a better understanding about their behavior and to have control)principal dean

- Principals dean have the role of being harsh because they we were to known as demanding, threatening and has authoritative figure.

- It always been advantage if home and school have close contacts- Home should also reinforce task of educating and guiding the child. Parents should

understand the emotional, social changes that happen in their child.

LEADING CONCERNS OF GUIDANCE:

1. Complexity of living – with the modern technology happening nowadays, we need to know our potentials, strengths, interests and abilities. Career options

2. Attainment of effective self-direction – in our daily lives, we need guidance to cope with it and better understanding to accept changes.

3. Expansion of capabilities – as we grow up we need to expand and broaden our power, knowledge and skills; gain insights and experience and discover interests.

4. Necessity for discovering and developing leadership skills – a leader should have followers in able to lead them, you have to develop your interpersonal relationship with others.

5. Emergence of Multiple Intelligence – this is essential as every person is unique and has own different multiple intelligence. Know your multiple intelligence and discover what are you inclined of doing something, what could you become in the future.

6. Introduction of Individual learning Style – a normal person doesn’t have a learning disability rather a learning problem. Know your learning style and me use of it. It gives reference and helps the teacher on what approach she might use in teaching children.

7. Concern for solution to problems of adjustment in every phase of a human endeavor. – Sometimes a person could not see the clear picture of your problem so the guidance counselor knows how to interpret his behavior.

8. Steps on Appraisal – self-awareness, sometimes we need others to evaluate our moves, measures on how smart / good we decide on things and what others think about us.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF GUIDANCE

1. Process – pertains to the series of activities to assist the individual in developing a healthy outlook in an atmosphere of security and direction.

2. Developmental aspect- pertains to the aims for the development of the whole person.3. Wilder scope – points out to the fact that guidance is for everyone, not only for the

disturbed and those learners with problems.4. Guidance is focused on the individual person although the process employed may be in a

group setting.5. Right to free choice is where the individual learner’s ability to decide for himself must be

given the primary target of assistance.6. Wise decision-making is done with a view and the possibilities for the development of the

learner’s potentials in the future.7. Realistic appraisal of opportunities around him has to be given consideration and emphasis.8. Recognition – of individual difference should be practiced.9. Assistance- given can be in forms of means or methods emphasizing on goals to help an

individual to his fullest development.
