DAF Trucks operates an active environ-mental policy. The company has been afrontrunner in the development ofquieter trucks and cleaner engines formany years, and has given considerablepriority to environmentally- friendlyproduction processes. In paintinginstallations at DAF Trucks mainly water-based paint systems are used, and bothproduction and office waste is collectedand separated for appropriate disposal.Moreover, environmental1ly-consciousproduct development means that theenvironmental aspects of each newproduct are taken into account, at thestart of the design process.Environmental protection systems are asimportant to DAF as our quality assuran-ce systems.

Optimum concern for the environment

It should therefore be no surprise tolearn that DAF Trucks was one of thefirst companies in the truck industry toachieve ISO 14001-certification for itsenvironmental management system.

RecyclingRecycling – in other words the re-use ofmaterials - also represents a key compo-nent of DAF Trucks' environmental policy.This approach saves raw material andreduces the size of the refuse mountain.Clearly, trucks are mainly built out ofmetal parts and metal, by its very nature,is easy to recycle. However, more andmore plastics are being introduced intothe commercial vehicle industry. Themajority of plastics can also be easilyrecycled, so long as a clear identification

of the material type is provided. All plasticparts used in the production plant aretherefore issued with a separate materialcode, to identify the exact plastic type.On the basis of this material code, serv-ice engineers will be able to sort andsegregate plastic waste, ensuring suitabi-lity for reprocessing.

For ease of sorting, DAF Trucks hasprepared an inventory of plastic partsintroduced in its vehicles and has listedthem in Guides for Sorting Plastic Parts.In order to assist in the identification of allparts, each plastic type in these guideshas been issued its own unique colourcode. As a result, it is no longer necessa-ry to check each individual part formaterial codes.

In this way, DAF Trucks is working continuously towards a better environment.
