Rely on the worldsleading specialistAs one of the world

    leading specialists

    in wiring accessories,

    Legrand actively participate

to the elaboration of theinstallation standards

    at international (IEC),

    regional (NEC) and local

    levels. Thus, the technical

    expertise of the Legrand

    people makes it possible

    to propose installation

    products suitable for each

    specific local market.

Detailed knowledgeof the wiring rulesThe purpose of this

    document is to clearly

    present the most

    frequently encountered

sets of wiring rules, showing the main

    technical characteristics

    of each set of installation

    and main accessories

    standards. Obviously, on

    any given project, it is

    essential that the design

    engineers work should

    be based on a detailed

    knowledge of the wiring

    regulations and standards

    which are applicable in

    the specific country.This document compares

    the basic framework

    of the standards.

    Therefore, it is essential

    for the design engineer

    to obtain more detailed

    information by contacting

    the appropriate standards

    and building regulations

    organisations.

One of the most completeoffer of the market

    130 000 catalogue items!

    For you, the wealth

    of the Legrand Groups

    catalogue offer is the

    guarantee that you

    will find the products

    and solutions best

    suited to your specific

    requirements in terms of

    electrical installations and

    communication networks.Continuous innovation

    No less than 1 800

    people are dedicated

    full-time to research and

    development. On average,

    Legrand invests 5% of its

    sales each year in R&D.

    SustainableDevelopment: a priority

    For many years,the Legrand Group

    has drawn strength

    from its values to ensure

    profitable, sustainable

    and responsible growth

    in its business.

The world of electrical installationsis not always straightforward.Working on an international project

electrical engineers are often bewilderedby the extensive amount of electricalstandards and wiring regulations whichdetermines their decisions.

By signing up to the Global Compactin 2006, this approach has beengiven a wider dimension.

The Groups environmentalcommitment is centred on 3 guidinglines: taking on board environmentalmanagement in the running ofits industrial sites, reducing

the environmental impact of itsproducts by eco-design, providingenvironmentally friendly solutions

    that contribute to energy savings.

    Overview of the installation

    and related wiringaccessories standard

    tSUPPLYSince 1 January 1995 nominal vol-tage in UK is 230 V +10% / - 6% a.c.at 50 Hz. Earth is normally supplied

    but may be local.

tHOUSE SERVICE CUT-OUTThe Electricity Boards protectivedevice, usually a 80 A or a 100 AHRC Fuse. It is sealed in a specialhousing to prevent tampering.

tMETERUsually a dual meter for normaland off-peak energy consumption,

    sealed to prevent tampering.

tCONSUMER UNITIt houses the main switch whichisolates the total installation andthe individual circuit protectiondevices. The consumer unit shouldcomply with BS EN 60439-3.Circuit protection is normallyprovided by miniature circuitbreakers to BS EN 60898 (olderinstallation may have fuse

protection). The consumer unit mayalso contain one or more residualcurrent devices providing additizo-nal protection in all or part of theinstallation (older installations maynot have RCD protection provided).

tPOWER CIRCUITSAppliances having heavy currentconsumption (cookers, water-heaters, etc.) should each besupplied on a specific circuit

    of the appropriate rating.

In general, a double pole switchcontrols and isolates the appliancewhen necessary and the connectionof the appliance can be made

either directly to the switch or viaa flexible cable outlet. Switchesshould conform to BS EN 60669and Cooker Control unit to BS 4177.

    2 gang 75 mm 135 mm 121 mm

tSOCKET OUTLET CIRCUITSSocket outlets should comply withBS 1363-2 and are usually of theswitched type. They are usuallysupplied via a ring final circuitwhich is a circuit running fromthe protection device to each outletand then returning to the protectiondevice. Permanent connectionsto a ring final circuit and branchesoff the ring are made via fused

    connection units to BS 1363-4.

Socket outlets to BS 546 areno longer used in domesticinstallations in the UK but are stillwidely used in some other countries.

tPLUGSPlugs of domestic appliancesshould conform to BS 1363-1.They contain a fuse linkto BS 1362 of a rating appropriateto the flexible cord of the appliance(max =13 A). Domestic appliancessold in UK must be fitted with

a BS 1363-1 plug, further the UKplug and socket safety regulationsrequire mandatory third partycertification of plugs.

tLIGHTING CIRCUITSUsually a circuit supplies severallighting points in turn. A lightingpoint usually consists of a ceilingrose in which incoming, outgoingand switch connections are madeand a pendant flexible cordsupplying an attached lampholderor may be a complete luminaire.Light switches should meetBS EN 60669-1. Dimmers shouldmeet BS EN 60669-2-1.

lawn-mowers should havea 30 mA RCD protection).

tEARTHINGSocket outlets to BS1363-2have provision for earthing.A protective conductor (which could

also be steel conduit) is generallyrequired for all low voltage circuits(1000 V a.c. between conductors)and its continuity must be proved. All main incoming services, for example, water and gas pipesand metallic parts of the buildingstructure, etc. must be bondedand connected to the mainearthing terminal of the installation. In addition it may be necessaryto supplementary bond water

and waste pipes, sinks and othermetallic items such as centralheating radiators. However inrooms with a fixed bath or shower, supplementary bonding mustbe applied to simultaneouslyaccessible metal parts unlessRCD protection of all circuitsin the bathroom is provided.

    tPOLARITYThe polarity is conserved and

marked throughout the installation:Live:Terminals marked L are for browncoloured insulated conductors, both solid conductors and flexibleconductors are coloured brownNeutral:Terminals marked N are for bluecoloured insulated conductors, both solid conductors and flexibleconductors are coloured blue.Earth:

Terminals marked E or arefor green/yellow coloured

insulated earth conductors, both solid conductors and flexibleconductors are either colouredgreen or yellow or sleeved as such.

tCABLINGMost domestic wiring is done inflat p.v.c. insulated and sheathed3 core cable (flat twin and earth).Maximum use is made of floorand internal wall voids to runcables. Surface installationsare run in conduit or trunking, these can be plastic or metal.Various British standards governthe design and construction of

conduits, trunking and cable.Wiring accessories may beinstalled in plastic or (more often)metal flush boxes to BS 4662.Surface installations are madein appropriate proprietary boxes.

    Typically:

BS 7671, Requirements for ElectricalInstallations is published by the Institutionof Engineeringand Technology and BSI, it governs all domesticelectrical installations (and many other types).Copies are available from:

    tSUPPLYMay be single phase (230 V-50 Hz)or - in the majority of cases -3 phases (400 / 230 V-50 Hz).

Max. Tolerance (voltage): + 6% /-10%. TN- and TT- systems arein use. TT- systems are the mostcommon in domestic installations. There is usually one meter.Facilities are provided witha second meter for specialtariffs, etc.A fuse isolator unit allows allphases to be cut-off, isolatingthe whole domestic installation.

tDISTRIBUTION BOARDThe distribution board usuallycontains pre-fuses (for example3 x 32 A), RCBO 30 mA for house-hold applications (1 or 3 poles).Transformer(s) as for entry doorsystems, MCB (16 A for generalcircuits up to 32 A (3 poles) for(water) heating systems). Time lagswitches in dwellings. These devi-ces are all mounted on a DIN-Rail.

tPOWER CIRCUITSSingle phase up to 3 WA, 7.3 KVA:3 phases.Electrical appliances havinga high power consumption(cookers, washing machines, etc.)are supplied via a specific circuitand connected either to 16 Asocket-outlet or cable outlet or toa specific socket Perilexi or CEE 17.

It is not uncommon to find 3 phasesappliances. Protection ratingand cable size of each circuit arecalculated according to the appliance

    (min section 1.5 mm2Cu 16 A).

tGENERAL CIRCUITSThese circuits supply bothlighting points and socket outlets. The rating of the protective deviceis usually 16 A.There is no limitation of the numberof outlets on a circuit. This limit iscalculated according to expected/probable use of the circuit. Socket

outlets are generally of the 2P+Etype German". These plugs arenon polarized. All German socket outlets areearthed. In general, the protectiveconductor is distributed throughoutall circuits. For class II devices< 2.5 A, the Euro-plug is used. The wire cross-section of thefixed installed cables is normally1.5mm (protected by a 16 A CircuitBreaker).

tDAMP & OUTDOORINSTALLATIONSSpecial rules apply, in particularfor IP rating of accessories and

    equipment and RCD Protection.

tEARTHINGEarthing is local, usually througha foundation earthing arrangement. All metallic services shall bebonded (gas and water pipe, heating, waste systems, etc.) witha 10 mm2. In bathrooms the localequipotential bonding could havea cross sectional area of 4 mm2.

Neutral is re-earthed in the controlpanel. A protective conductoris distributed to all socket outlets.

tINSTALLATION RULESThe installation must complywith the requirements of VDE 0100and the TAB (TAB = technischeAnschlussbedingungen = specialrequirements of the energysupplier, for example EON, RWE,EnBw or Wattenfall). Installationsmay only be erected by registeredand qualified electricians.

tSUPPLYUsually single phase (230 V / 50 Hz).Earth is usually local (TT system). The protective conductor

is mandatory in every circuit. An AD fuse is installed on thephase in conjunction with the maincircuit breaker.

tMETERA single kW/h meter is supplied. If an optional off-peak power fareis subscribed, a 2-fares meterwith pilot-line switching is installed.

tMAIN CIRCUIT-BREAKERThis device has 3 functions:- Acts as the main switch

of the installation- Limits the current consumption

to a pre-settled level of thecontract with electricity supplier

    - Provides protection against indirectcontact through a residual currentprotection (type S, 500 mA).

    t

LIGHTNING PROTECTIONThe installations suppliedby an overhead electric Iineand located in high risk lightningareas have to be protected bya Surge Protective Device (SPD)installed downstream of the mainresidual current circuit breaker. The Surge Protective Device hasto be connected to the main earthterminal of the consumer unit.

tCONSUMERS DISTRIBUTIONBOARDAll the protection and controlfunctions of the electrical

installation are located in the mainhousehold trunking (called GTL).The power distribution panel boardand the communication panelboard are located in the GTL.

tPOWER DISTRIBUTION PANELBOARDThis panel board concentrates allthe control and protection functionsof the electrical installation.

The protection against overcurrent(short circuit and overload)is provided by circuit-breakersor fuses. All the circuits have to beprotected by a 30 mA RCD in orderto provide the complementaryprotection against the directcontacts. Other devices could belocated in the panel board as:- Time switches and time delay

relays- Bell transformer- Power relays (heating, etc)- Latching relays for lighting- Signalling lamps- Daylight/dusk switches- Dimmers- Land-shedding relays- Off-peak power relays- Buzzer or bell.

tCIRCUIT PROTECTION AGAINSTOVERCURRENTEach circuit has to be protectedagainst overcurrent at its origin.

The overcurrent protection deviceshall ensure the simultaneousbreaking of both phase and neutralconductors. The protection deviceshould be a miniature circuitbreakers or a fuse cartridge.

tSPECIALIZED CIRCUITSSome appliances (e.g. washingmachine, freezer, dishwasher, etc)should be supplied by a dedicated

circuit having the appropriate crosssectional area and overcurrentand RCD protection. They will beconnected either via a socketor via a cable outlet box (e.g. oven, cooking plate, water-heater).

tSOCKET OUTLETSThe socket outlet circuits areinstalled in a star configuration. The maximum number of socket-outlets is 8 on a 2.5 mm2circuitand 5 on a 1.5 mm2circuit.Socket outlets are of the earthedtype 2P+E. Shutters are mandatoryfor all type of socket-outletsup to 32 A.

tPLUGSThey can be 2P or 2P+E type. The flat bodied 2P type shouldhave sleeved pins. Specific 20 A

tCABLINGMost domestic wiring is run eitherin plastic surface mounted trunkingor in plastic flushed-in conduitsystems. Generally PVC insulatedsolid copper conductors are usedin fixed wiring.Concerning the surface-mountedtrunking systems, the protectionagainst the external influences hasto be ensured throughout the entirelength of the circuit.

tELECTRICAL ACCESSORYINSTALLATIONSwitches, sockets, etc., shouldbe installed in a flush or surface

mounted box or in an especiallydesigned trunking system. All the accessories have to bescrew fitted.

tOUTDOOR CIRCUITSThe use of a 30 mA RCD protectionis mandatory for the protectionof the domestic outdoor circuits.Outdoor sockets should be at leastIP 44.

tBATHROOMSSpecific rules apply for circuitsin bathrooms.

tCOMMUNICATION BOARDIn the domestic installationa communication board is installedin the main household trunking

(GTL). It is the central partof the communication networkof the dwelling. Each room of the dwellingis supplied by a twisted pair cableoriginating from the communicationboard and terminating with an RJ 45socket. This communication networkis able to provide different servicessuch as telephone, Ethernet and TV.

tSUPPLYUsually single phase (127 V-60 Hz)and two phase (220 V-60 Hz) loads.Phases and neutral are supplied.

Earth is usually local.A circuit-breaker shouldbe installed on the phases. Fusesare still common in old residences.

tMETERAs single kWh meter is supplied. The most common domestic typeof electricity meter is the electro-mechanical induction watt-hourmeter sealed in a special housing

    to prevent tampering.

tMAIN CIRCUIT-BREAKERThis unit has 3 functions:- Acts as main isolator

for the installation- Limits consumption of current

to a pre-set level determinedby contract with electricity

    supply organisation- Provides blanker residual

    current protection at 300 mA.

tCOMPULSORY PROTECTIONAGAINST LIGHTNINGInstallation supplied by overheadelectric line and located in areaswhere thunder is heard more than25 days per year must be protectedby a Surge Protective Deviceimmediately placed after the mainresidual current circuit breaker(300 mA and recommended Type S).The Surge Protective Device mustbe connected to the earth terminalblock of the distribution board.

tCONSUMERS DISTRIBUTIONBOARDIt contains distribution of powerto subcircuits and circuit protection

(overload and short circuit].Additionally it may contain otherfunctions:- Residual current protection

of sub-circuits- Time switches or time

delay relays- Bell transformer- Power relays (heating, etc)- Latching relays for lighting- Indicator lamps- Daylight/dusk switches

    - Dimmers- Land-shedding relays- Off-peak power relays- Buzzer or bell- Home automation. The unit is usually site-assembledand soft wired (no busbars).

tCIRCUIT PROTECTIONEach circuit must have a suitableprotection device on its source. This device shall insurethe breaking of phases conductorsin one operation. Rewireable fusesare not required by Brazilianelectrical installation of buildingstandard, the NBR 5410.

tPOWER CIRCUITSAll appliances having a relativelyhigh consumption of current shouldbe supplied on a specific circuitwith appropriate protection

and cabling. They will be connectedeither via a special plugand socket-outlet or via cable outlet

box (e.g. cooker, dishwasher, washing machine, water-heater,air-conditioning, etc). Individualcircuits must be used for lighting

    points and socket outlets points.

tSOCKET OUTLETSAre supplied on radial circuitsprovided with earth (maximumof 8 socket outlets per circuitin 220 V and 5 socket outletsin 127 V). It is recommendedall circuits of socket outletsare protected by 30m A ResidualCurrent Devices. Socket outlets

are of the earthed type (2P+E)up to 20 A and should comply withthe ABNT NBR 14136 (Braziliandimensional standard). Shuttersare not mandatory. There are twoversions of socket outlets:10 A and 20 A. A 10 A socketoutlet should not allow the insertof a 20 A plug,

tPLUGSPlugs can be 2P or 2P+E type upto 20 A and should comply withthe ABNT NBR 14136 (Braziliandimensional standard). Sleevedpins are not mandatory. There are two versions of plugs:- For equipment with rated current

up to 10 A- For equipment with rated current

    above 10 A up to 20 A.

    tLIGHTING POINTS

Lighting points are supplied radialcircuits provided with earth (max8 points per lighting circuit) and

The use of time switches to controllights in public areas is commonlyused.

tEARTHINGAll circuits distribute a protectiveconductor. All services should bebonded to earth. Supplementarybonding of metal fittings in bathrooms, kitchens, etc., is also necessary.

tCABLINGMost domestic wiring is run eitherin plastic surface trunking or influshed in conduit systems. Somerules govern the choice of the typeof conduit to be used.Generally solid copper conductors(usually PVC insulated) are used forfixed wiring. Attention must be paidto the various rules governing cablesection, voltage drop, etc.For plastic surface trunking,

protection against external influen-ces must be ensured continuouslythroughout the length of conduitruns, especially at angles andentries into wiring devices.

tELECTRICALACCESSORY INSTALLATIONSwitches, sockets, etc., should beinstalled in a flush or surface boxor in a purpose made equipmenttrunking. Accessories may beeither screw-fitted or providedwith expanding claws which gripthe walls of a circular flush box

tOUTDOORSThe use of 30 mA RCD protectionis recommended. Outdoor socketoutlets should be at least IP 44.

tBATHROOMSSpecial rules apply to bathroomswhich are divided into 4 zones.

All electrical installations should complywith Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 5410.

ENERGY EFFICIENCYLighting is a significant consumerof energy in commercial buildings:

    - 20 % of total site energy is consumed by lightingin commercial buildings.- Lighting is the first electricity end-userin a commercial building with up to 40 % electricityconsumed.NB: Energy end-use distribution greatly varies depending on the activityof the building and across geographical and climate regions (sources:Department of Energy Buildings and Energy Information Administration, USA).

With heating and air-conditioning, lighting accountsfor the greatest energy consumption and costsof a building.

These significant costs can be managed more effectivelythrough the use of lighting management.

Each year, more organizations implement lightingmanagement because they recognize the wide rangeof benefits:Energy savings, Economic savings, Code compliance,Sustainability building practice...

THE RIGHT PRODUCT FOR EACH APPLICATIONBecause of different types of spaces, mostprojects require multiple solutions to maximizeenergy savings and occupants satisfaction.

By installing lighting management and otherautomated controls, energy waste is totallyavoided and the building only consumes

the necessary amount of energy when needed.Legrand commits to providing customers withcomplete and transparent information on actualsavings for its lighting management solutions. Please contact us for more information.
