It is said that the most contented citizensin Germany live in and around Munich. Ifthis is correct, the city’s fifth season – theOctober festival – must be one of thereasons. The largest popular festivity in theworld makes an early start in Septemberand attracts millions of people fromthroughout the world. The residents ofMunich erect large tents onTheresienwiese, fill them with music, foodand drink and… enjoy life!

Munich was founded with the MunichMonastery in 1158. Later the oldestGerman food law was passed here - thebeer purity law (1506) - and it is still is usetoday.

A good place to start out for a walk in thecity today is Schwabing, a traditional areaknown for its many Kneipen (pubs) andnight spots. A lot of students live here asthe University is only a stone’s throwaway.

Nymphenburg is dominated by the castleand is rather distinguished, whileHaidhausen, a district full of culture andart, is also becoming increasingly popularas a residential area. Visitors can findmany of the finest churches (the cathedralamong others) and the castle in the oldcity centre.

The green lung - Englischer Garten (theEnglish Garden) - is a park of 3.7 squarekilometres in the middle of the city. The

Englischer Garten borders the River Isarand is very popular among joggers, sunbathers and people who just want tostroll or have a picnic.
