Setting Up YourPrinter

Selecting a Location for Your Printer

• A firm surface such as a table or desktop• Space to open the cover and pull out the paper tray and

the rear output extender• Air circulation around the printer to prevent overheating

(minimum of 4 inches)• A nearby power source• Room temperature of 50° to 90°F (10° to 32°C)• Relative Humidity of 20-80%• No direct sunlight

Checking the Contents

Unpack your printer. The shipping box should contain:

1 OKIPAGE 10e Printer (with image drum cartridgeinstalled)

2 CD-ROM (includes printer drivers, software and UserManual)

3 Toner Cartridge

4 Black plastic light-shield bag (to store image drum if youneed to ship the printer)

5 Power Cord

6 Warranty Registration Card

Remove the Image Drum ProtectivePaper

2 Lift out the image drum cartridge. Do not touch thedrum’s green surface or remove the sponge.

! Only the OKIPAGE 10 and 12 Series Type 5 Image Drumwill fit in this unit (Part# 40433305)

3 Without turning the drum cartridge over, remove theprotective paper from the image drum.

4 Reinstall the cartridge into the printer.

Remove Protective Film

Lift up the corner and peel the protective plastic film fromthe operator panel.

Installing Toner

1 Remove the sponge.

2 Unwrap the toner cartridge. Shake the cartridge todistribute the toner.

! Only the OKIPAGE 10 and 12 Series Type 5 TonerCartridge will fit in this unit (Part# 52109001)

3 Peel tape off the bottom.

4 Grasp the lock lever and place the left side of the tonercartridge under the end tab.

5 Lower the right side into the toner well, aligning the locklever slot with the ridge in the drum cartridge.

6 When the cartridge is in place, push the lock lever forwarduntil it stops.

7 Lower the printer cover and press firmly to close.

Loading Paper

1 Slide the tray out of the printer.

! The paper gauge (1) indicates how much paper remainsin the tray; you don’t have to slide the tray out to check.

2 Adjust the tray guides for the correct paper size.

3 Fan a stack of paper and place it in the tray under the tabs.Do not fill above the “PAPER FULL” mark.

! Recommended paper weight for the tray is 16 to 28 lb(60 to 105 g/m2).

4 Place the tray into the printer then push closed until thetray locks in place.

Using Legal Size PaperTo load legal size paper, open out the tray extender andadjust the rear paper guide.

Paper Exit Paths

Two paper exit options are available. Select the paper paththat is appropriate for the media you are using.

Top Paper ExitUse the top paper exit for most printing jobs.

• Printed pages exit face down• Pages are stacked in the order printed• Exit bin holds 150 sheets of 20-lb. paper

1 Pull the front exit extender forward.

2 Lift out the support bar.

! Don’t change paper paths while printing −−−−− paper jammay occur.

Rear Paper ExitThe rear paper exit tray provides a straighter paper path. Userear exit when printing on heavy paper, envelopes, labels, andtransparencies.

• Printed pages exit face up in reverse order• Maximum output is 50 sheets of 20-lb. paper• Use rear exit for printing on heavy paper, envelopes,

labels, transparencies or odd size paper

1 Pull out the rear exit extender until it locks in place.

To return to the top exit, close the rear support bar and pushthe rear exit extender firmly back in place, paper will then exitinto the top bin.

Choosing Paper• For best results, use paper that is smooth and of high

quality.• Store paper in its ream wrapper until you are ready to use

it, and keep it away from moisture or other conditionsthat can cause it to wrinkle or curl.

• Avoid printing on both sides of the paper for more than afew pages, or preprinted documents that have been in aphotocopier.

• Try paper before you buy it in quantity.

When purchasing paper, use the following specifications forbest results:

Basic WeightPaper cassette: 16 to 28 lb (60 to 105 g/m2

Manual feed: 16 to 32 lb (60 to 120.5 g/m2)

Printing the Demo and Menu PagesWith the printer powered up but off line, press down on theprinter’s operator panel switch for two seconds. The printerthen prints the demo page and the menu page.

Interfacing with your Computer

Your printer has a high-speed, bi-directional parallel IEEE 1284interface port. Purchase a cable marked IEEE 1284 compliant.To comply with FCC regulations, the cable must be shieldedand UL and CSA approved. Consult your PC manual for detailson cable requirements and interface ports on your computer.

! OKIDATA has tested and approved the following bi-directional cable: Part Number 70000803. See Serviceand Support in the User’s Guide for purchasinginformation.

Connecting the CableMake sure the printer and computer are off.

1 Insert the printer end of the cable firmly into the properconnector on the back of the printer. Fasten the cable tothe printer securely.

2 Connect the other end of the cable to the proper connectoron your computer. Fasten the cable securely to yourcomputer.

Turning on the Printer1 Make sure the printer is off.

2 Plug the cord into the printer first, then into a groundedoutlet.

3 Turn the printer on. It takes about 10 seconds for theprinter to initialize and warm up, and for the Ready lighton the operator panel to turn on, indicating the printer isready to receive data.

Printer Software

The CD-ROM provided with your printer includes printerdrivers and the on-screen printer status monitor and operatorpanel required to use all the OKIPAGE 10e features. Followthe steps in this guide to install the appropriate driver on yourcomputer system.

Printer DriversPrinter drivers must be installed so your software applicationcan communicate with your printer and support all of itsfeatures.

The OKIPAGE 10e CD-ROM includes printer drivers forprinting in the following Windows environments:

• Windows 95• Windows 98• Windows 3.x• Windows NT 4.0

! If you are using DOS or another non-windows operatingsystem, select a PCL-compatible driver.

No CD-ROM Drive?If you do not have a CD-ROM drive, there are three ways youcan get access to a printer driver:

1 Visit the Okidata web site at http://www.okidata.com anddownload the printer drivers.

2 If you can locate a CD-ROM drive on another system, youcan use the CD-ROM to create diskettes.

− Close all open applications.− Insert the OKIPAGE 10e CD into the CD-ROM drive.− Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar, then

click Run.− Enter d:\install (assuming “d” is the location of the CD

ROM drive). Click OK . The OKI Menu Installer Setup window appears.

− Click Create Diskettes to create your diskette.

3 Order a 3.5" diskette kit. It contains a Windows driverthat will allow you to use your printer. Follow theinstructions in the README.TXT file on the diskette toinstall it. To obtain a set of diskettes, call 1-888-232-8530and request the appropriate set.

Status MonitorThe status monitor program allows you to monitor andconfigure an OKIPAGE 10e that is connected to your parallelport. In addition to displaying printer status messages, thestatus monitor provides remote access to the printer’soperator panel.

1 Close all open applications.

2 Insert the OKIPAGE 10e CD into your CD-ROM drive.

Click Printer Software to continue the installation.

5 Welcome window appears. Click Next.

6 License Agreement appears. Click Yes.

7 Destination window appears. Click Next.

8 Select Program Folder window appears. Click Next.

9 Port Selection Folder window appears. Select printer portand click Next. Installation begins. Follow theinstructions on the screen.

10When prompted, click Finish to complete the installation.

11Restart Windows.

12Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar, thenchoose Programs→→→→→OKIPAGE 10e. From the submenu,click Electronic Registration, Windows Status Monitor,or Readme.txt to see any of these programs.

Installing the Standard Driver and theStatus Monitor1 Insert the disc into your CD-ROM drive.

Using the Status Monitor

With the status monitor open, printer status messages pop-upon your computer screen, and printer menu settings can bemodified using the on-screen operator panel.

! Printer features selected in your application softwarewill override settings in the on-screen operator panel.

Three tabs include the following information:

••••• Printer State - (shown here) shows the printer status andcurrent job status.

••••• Printer Setup – gives you access to the Printer Setupdialog (printer driver control).

••••• Preferences - sets the behavior and appearance of thestatus monitor.

Click the Help button for a description of each feature.

Refer to the User Manual for information on status monitortroubleshooting.

Using the Printer Menu Setup

The printer menu setup is designed to perform as aninteractive software “front panel” for accessing the printer’smenu from your computer. To invoke the printer menu setup,open the status monitor, click the printer setup tab, then clickthe Printer Menu button. Click the Help button for anexplanation of each feature.

! Printer features set in your application software willoverride printer menu settings.

Click on the appropriate tab to see the menu settings.

(1) Set Raster Buffer, Font Protection.(2) Reset menu, drum count, print menu, interface.(3) Set display language, page placement, and print position.(4) Access printer hardware and firmware information.(5) Select paper source, weight, size, transparencies.(6) Adjust lines per page, orientation, edit size, and select emulation (PCL, IBM, EPSON).(7) Set print output quality, darkness setting.(8) Set power save, toner save.(9) Print demo page, font page, menu settings, cleaning page.

Using Power Save to MinimizeWarm-up Time

To minimize the printer’s warm-up time between print jobs,disable the Power Save feature in the Printer Menu Setup:

1 In Windows 95, click Start and select Programs.

2 Choose OKIPAGE 10e and click OKIPAGE 10e StatusMonitor .The Status Monitor appears.

3 Select the Printer Setup tab and press Printer Menu .

4 In the Printer Menu Setup, select the Economy tab asshown below.

5 In the Power Save box, select Off .

6 Press Apply to finalize your change.

Uninstall Printer Software

If you want to remove the printer driver or status monitorfrom your hard drive, use the following procedure:

Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT 4.0To remove the printer driver:

1 Click Start →→→→→Settings →→→→→Printers

2 Highlight the OKIPAGE 10e Printer icon.

3 Click File from the Menu bar.

4 Click Delete.

To remove the status monitor:

1 Click Start →→→→→Settings →→→→→Control Panel.

2 Double-click Add/Remove Program.

3 On the Install/Uninstall tab, select the OKIPAGE 10eSoftware.

4 Click the Add/Remove button.

Windows 3.xTo remove the printer driver and status monitor:

1 From Program Manager double-click the OKIPAGE 10eicon (or the group where your printer is installed).

2 Double-click uninstallShield.

3 Restart your computer.
