Historical Note

In 1987, the National Park Service, in coordination with America's Industrial Heritage Project (AIHP), began an initiative to inventory historic sites in southwestern Pennsylvania. The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), both of which form a division of the Park Service, began this multi-year historical and architectural documentation project in order to identify surviving historic engineering works and industrial resources in the region.

The results of these inventories have been published by HABS/HAER through AIHP, subsequently the Southwestern Pennsylvania Heritage Preservation Commission, and are available to the public. The measured drawings and the large-format photographs produced during this process have been deposited in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Copies of the drawings and photographs have been deposited at IUP. The remaining research material has also been retained at IUP, including the 35mm photographs taken by the HABS/HAER teams, some research notes and correspondence associated with the project, and maps and blueprints of regional sites and buildings.

Scope and Content Notes

SERIES A: SUBSERIES I: Research Material, Contact Sheets and Supporting Material

This series represents the bulk of materials collected and produced by the HABS/HAER field teams. Subseries I includes publications and other resource materials gathered by the field workers, questionnaires and notes of the field workers, and miscellaneous correspondence related to the project areas of the HABS and HAER teams. Also contained in this subseries are the contact sheets for the 35mm photographs taken of the various sites and buildings in the region. These contact prints indicate the reference numbers that are necessary to locate the corresponding 3 1/2" X 5 1/4" prints and negatives for each project. These materials are arranged by HABS/HAER project.

SUBSERIES II: HABS Written Data Files

This series is comprised of a mix of three types of files produced by the HABS teams. The most common file type is one which includes both written historical/descriptive data and photograph indices relating to a specific building, complex, or town. This type of file also contains photocopies of numbered prints. The second type of file holds only a photograph index and photocopies of contact prints relating to a site. The third type of file offers only written information about a given site. Each file has an assigned HABS number, regardless of the file type, and this sub-series is organized by HABS number. While these HABS numbers are not geographically assigned, groups of numbers sometimes cluster around a certain general location.

SUBSERIES III: HAER Written Data Files

This series is made up of the files produced by the HAER teams and records significant engineering and industrial sites in the AIHP project area. Each numbered file corresponds to a specific building, site or complex. A single numbered HAER file may contain one or more of the following: written information, photocopies of contact prints, photocopies of drawings or maps. The sub-series is arranged by HAER number.

SERIES B

SUBSERIES I: Photographs

All of the 35mm photographs taken by HABS and HAER that were printed are stored in this series. They are arranged by reference number, alphabetically and then numerically. It is necessary to view the contact sheets contained in Series A to obtain a reference number before attempting to find a particular photograph.

SERIES B

SUBSERIES II: HABS Contact Prints

Contact Prints of all the large format photographs produced by the HABS teams are included in this sub-series. These include 4" x 5", 5"x 7", and even some 7"x 9" prints. These prints are organized by HABS number. Oversize materials are stored in a separate box at the end of the series. The HABS number which corresponds to a particular print can be found by referring to the photograph indices and corresponding information in the data files of Series A, Sub-series II.

SUBSERIES III: HAER Contact Prints

This series holds copies of the large format photographs taken by the HAER teams as they documented engineering and industrial sites. Each print is numbered and can be located by referring to the HAER number found in the written data files. Series A, Sub-series III files must be consulted to obtain the proper HAER number. The series is arranged by HAER number.

SERIES C

SUBSERIES I: Negatives

This series consists exclusively of negatives for the 35mm photographs found in Series B, Sub-series I. These are strictly for copying purposes and are unavailable for general viewing. All of these negatives may be viewed in the form of a contact sheet, found in Series A, Sub-series I. Again, the negatives are arranged by reference number, alphabetically and then numerically. This number should be referred to when requesting a copy of any photograph.

SUBSERIES II: HABS Negatives

This series houses the numbered negatives which correspond to the photographs produced by the HABS teams and found in Series B, Sub-series II. These negatives are solely for copying purposes and are not available for general viewing. This series is arranged by HABS number, and negatives can be identified by use of the photograph indices included in the data files in Series A, Sub-series II. The HABS number must be referred to when requesting a copy be made of any photograph.

SERIES C

SUBSERIES III: HAER Negatives

In this series are found the negatives for the prints found in Series B, Sub-series III. These are to be used for copying purposes only. The negatives are arranged by HAER number. This number should be used when requesting a copy be made of any print.

SERIES D: Published Materials

The final phase in the research process of the HABS/HAER Teams included the publishing of their findings. This series contains the volumes produced as a result of the HABS/HAER research efforts.

SERIES E: Maps

This series includes all of the oversized materials collected by the HABS and HAER teams. This includes copies of historic maps, blueprints of historic buildings, and other miscellaneous drawings and large documents. These materials are housed in the oversized map cases, located in Special Collections. They arranged in alphabetical order by county. In some cases, counties with large amounts of materials have been placed in one or more drawers.
