Our Approach
Education
From our extensive knowledge of group’s needs we have developed a
variety of programmes with clear links to the National Curriculum. All of our
programmes are adaptable to meet your requirements. Once the basic
programme has been selected, we work with you to input the module
choices shown in this brochure. Each programme type fits its own set of
objectives and has its own style of teaching.

Inspiration
We aim to teach knowledge and skills but also to inspire young people as
they connect to nature and they connect with each other. Whichever
programme you choose there will be an element of personal
development and teambuilding as well as activities in harmony with the
seashore, woodland and human habitats.
The Coast and the Seashore
We specialise in the coastal environment which gives such wonderful
opportunities for study, play and recreation. Our programmes are all
educationally based but always with a fun element built in and can be
adventurous and academic. We own our own venues and continually
develop our facilities and expertise. Above all our friendly and
experienced staff all believe passionately about the difference the
“school trip” will make.

Comfort Zone
Stretch Zone
Panic Zone
Our Programmes Our programmes are designed with your group’s needs in mind. They are
made up of a combination of modules, chosen to achieve the required
goals for your visit. You will have your own dedicated tutors who will work
with your group from pre-visit discussions, throughout your stay and any
post visit assistance required.
Included in the price
Full board and lodging.
Direct liaison with our Head of Teaching to
refine the details of your programme.
All tuition tailored to your curriculum needs.
All transport needed during the programme.
A pre-visit presentation for your group.
A free preview planning visit for group
leaders and their families.
Duration of Programme
During our week programmes (Monday
to Friday) we expect groups to arrive
from 1pm with activities starting at 2pm.
The week finishes after breakfast on
departure day so that we can prepare
rooms for the next arrivals.
A Short Week Programme (2 nights) is
also popular. It starts with arrival at 1 pm
and the first activity at 2pm and finishes
with an activity after breakfast on
departure day. Alternatively you may
wish to travel after school and arrive for
an evening session and have two days
of activities. This is especially suited to
weekend visits.
Challenge by Choice
We believe in Challenge by Choice, where you and only you can make
the choice. When faced with taking part in something new our
fears become exposed. By moving out of our comfort zone
we fear we will lose face, we will fail. Challenge
by choice allows each and every one of us
to chose voluntarily, free of peer pressure,
the level of challenge and participation in
an activity. Through moving out of our
comfort zone into out stretch zone we can
develop our self esteem.

Learning in the Field “Gathering a bunch of unrelated activities and calling them a programme is like
recording a bunch of unrelated sounds and calling them a symphony…”
Everybody appreciates and values a well planned programme which flows rather
than one that jumps from one unrelated activity to another. It allows individuals to
develop self confidence, self awareness and self worth rather than just collect a
clutch of new skills. Individuals are seen by each other in new situations which often
brings out a new respect and appreciation for each other. The activities in our
programmes are carefully selected and designed to flow into each other rather
than be a diverse selection of quick fix adrenalin. A supportive and encouraging
atmosphere is promoted throughout your stay.
We aim for clear educational outcomes which are in line with “High Quality Outdoor
Education” a document produced by the Outdoor Education Advisors Panel.
A positive attitude to challenge and adventure in the outdoors.
Increase in personal confidence and self esteem through the acquisition of
new skills.
The choice of healthy meals and sensible eating patterns.
The development of personal responsibility for safety, possessions, and each
other’s welfare.
Working as part of a team, developing the key skills of communication,
problem solving, and leadership.
A demonstration of increased initiative, perseverance and commitment.
Increased physical fitness and agility.
A greater appreciation of the environment and sustainable lifestyles.
Taken from “High Quality Outdoor Learning” produced by the Outdoor Education Advisors’ Panel
“Learning happens best with emotion,
challenge and support. People discover
their abilities, values, passions and
responsibilities in situations that offer
adventure and the unexpected.”
“It was lovely to arrive and know
that the children are in safe and
knowledgeable hands with the
staff at the Chatsworth, Thank You
for all being so great!”
“The times of reflection sitting quietly by the
camp fire were amazing. Students shared
feelings, emotions and experiences and
they really listened to each other too.”
“Being in the outdoors brought the
children alive - they appeared to
be visibly refreshed just by being
outside.”

Transition
Transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 represents a crucially important
stage in children’s education. Secondary school represents, for most pupils,
a very different environment from the one they have experienced in primary
school. Administration, pastoral care, teaching and learning are all
organised differently from an average primary school, largely because a
secondary school is much bigger and has a greater number of pupils and
staff. Our venues provide a microcosm of the experience where the focus is
completely on recognising and adapting to change. The Transition
Programme aims to make children feel supported, safe, happy and
confident, building peer relationships and making new friends.
Group Outcomes
Allow students to feel
supported by both teachers
and peers
Allowing time to build peer
relationships
To encourage students to
make new friends and
interact

Field Studies
Our Field Study Courses are based on the study of classic fieldwork sites
within Purbeck and the Jurassic Heritage Coast, bringing the textbook to
life. We believe that by experiencing first-hand the natural environment,
and man’s use of it, we bring the subject alive to students. This provides a
sense of realism, excitement and an experience which cannot be
generated through text books alone. Our method of teaching
encourages students to think for themselves and provides opportunities to
practice fieldwork and data collection techniques.
Programme Contents
Our programmes give relevance to
classroom topics as they are concerned
with real people in real situations and deal
with real issues. They enable students to;
observe, record, analyse, present and
interpret their own investigations. They
provide students with the opportunity to
talk about their own work, listen to others,
to share their knowledge and for them to
work cooperatively using academic,
practical and social skills.
Our Field Studies Tutors
Our highly regarded tutors provide a sound knowledge of the sites we
work in and any potential hazards of those sites. This is recorded and
available to you as Risk Assessments for your peace of mind and your
records. We are all graduates with a
strong commitment to working in
the outdoors. We are part of the
local community and have local
contacts able to contribute
specialist knowledge if needed. We
also have a regard for the
conservation of the sites we use.
Above all, we teach well, and we
develop open and respectful
relationships with the students
bringing out the best in them.
Included in the programme
A comprehensive workbook is provided for each student and there is
access to a suite of computers for data input. Our tutors are passionate
about the classic Field Study areas they work in and thoroughly enjoy
inspiring students in the same way.

Geography in Action This innovative programme combines adventurous activities with field
work to examine a range of case studies in the local area. Our
experience has shown that many students develop a greater
appreciation of Geography in the field during their visit. They interact with
the coastline whilst experiencing different activities that make the
coastline famous and the impacts these have on the area.
Activities include orienteering to Old Harry coastal formations; learning
about the impacts of visitors along a busy stretch of coastline; climbing
within a honey pot site and evening activities within the local
environment. The programme is suitable for Year 7 upwards. We
introduce Geography in both a fun and educational way to help
encourage students to choose Geography as a GCSE subject.
Learning Outcomes
Understanding and interpreting local
features.
Understanding local development
issues in the Isle of Purbeck and on the
Jurassic Coast.
Practice fieldwork and data collection.
A demonstration of increased personal
confidence and team work through
outdoor adventurous activities.
Putting theories into practice whilst
being in the outdoors.
