Robert Helps (1928-2001) was an American pianist and composer. He studied under Abby Whiteside, piano, and RogerSessions, composition. Helps served as Professor of Piano at the New England Conservatory, the San FranciscoConservatory, Princeton University, Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, and the Manhattan School ofMusic. He was Professor of Music at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida from 1980 until his death at 72 in2001. He performed internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. He composed piano, chamber, and symphonicworks. Most of them were published by C. F. Peters, Associated Music Publishers, E. B. Marks, and the AmericanComposers Edition. His music was recorded and released by CRI, Decca, Gramaphone, etc. In 1996, Robert Helpsreceived an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
This collection primarily consists of sketches, manuscripts, and printed scores composed by Robert Helps. Scorespublished by other composers (predominantly piano) also make up a significant portion of the collection. The Helps musicscores span from the early 1950s to 2001, and include sketches, manuscript scores, proof copies, corrections, publishedscores, and additional corrections on Helps' own performance copies. There are unpublished works in the collection, inaddition to numerous performance programs, newspaper articles, and performance reviews. The performances includedwere recorded on reel to reel tapes, cassette tapes, LPs, and digital audio tapes as well as VHS and Beta video tapes.Professional and personal correspondence, the bulk of which dates from the 1930s to 2000, is also present, in addition toprofessional and personal photographs.
