Any attempt to assemble a comprehensive collection of firsteditions such as this set of Yiddish Classics could not possiblysucceed without the cooperation of numerous individuals and insti-tutions. The basic collection from which the microfiche werereproduced is in the YIVO Library. The Jewish National andUniversity Library in Jerusalem supplied a substantial number oftitles. The following individuals and libraries were most generous intheir assistance and in allowing us to film materials from theircollections:

Dr. Charles Berlin, Harvard College LibraryReb Chaim Liberman, Library of the Lubavitcher RebbeDr. Lawrence Marwick, Hebraica Section of the Library of

CongressDr. Menahem Schmelzer, Library of the Jewish Theological

Seminary of America

We are sincerely grateful for their cooperation.

INTRODUCTION

The works of Shalom Jacob Abramowitz (Mendele Mocher Sforim),Isaac Loeb Peretz and Shalom Rabinowitz (Sholom Aleichem) are ofprimary importance in scholarly study and research in the fields ofmodern Yiddish and Hebrew literature. The literary heritage of thesewriters also plays a significant role in the linguistic studies of bothlanguages. Unfortunately, complete and reliable editions of theworks of these three founders of Yiddish and Hebrew literature donot exist to this day. Detailed textological studies of the majorportion of their works are lacking as well. Serious study of theseworks is further complicated by the fact that there is no singlelibrary that owns all the books, pamphlets and other publicationswhich appeared during the lifetimes of the authors. In cases whererare editions are owned by libraries, they are often in poor conditionand incomplete.

This microfiche collection of the works of Mendele Mocher Sforim,I. L. Peretz and Sholom Aleichem is being published in order to serveseveral purposes. It will fill existing gaps in the holdings ofestablished Judaica libraries. It will enable new Judaica collectionsto obtain, in microfiche form, works which are no longer available inthe original. It will provide interested individuals with convenientaccess to rare materials, and it will help preserve important literaryworks which are rapidly deteriorating.

With a few exceptions we have restricted this microfiche collectionto editions which appeared during the lifetimes of their authors. These can be regarded as the most reliable texts, appearing, as theyusually did, with the approval of the writers. Later, posthumous, editions of collected works are, in general, reprinted from earliereditions and cannot be considered authoritative or rare. We haveincluded several posthumous collections that contain reliable textualapparatus and are not readily available in libraries. Americanreprints, which often appeared without the author's approval and arenot very dependable, do not appear in this collection.

In addition to the original works of the authors we have includedpublications which they edited and published, such as periodicals, collections and calendars. Many of their original writings appear inthese works. We have not, however, included separately publishedreprints of works which appeared earlier in these collected works orperiodicals. In general, only the first edition of each book andpamphlet is reproduced here, not the reprints.

The works of each author are arranged by language (Yiddish,Hebrew, Russian) and in the following order:

1. Collected works - chronologically2. Individual works - alphabetically (by Hebrew alphabet)3. Edited works - alphabetically (by Hebrew alphabet)

5

Introduction

Specific problems relating to the writings of each author are dealtwith in the prefatory remarks to the individual microfiche lists.

Since we still lack full bibliographies of the writings of theseauthors it is possible that some items have been omitted. Further-more, it has not always been possible to locate copies of rare editionsin good condition. Additional efforts will be made to fill such gaps.*

* Any library holding any of the titles noted as missing and willingto permit us to microfilm them should contact the publisher. Shouldwe be successful in locating copies of any of these works, microfichecopies will be mailed to all subscribers free of charge.

Sh. J. ABRAMOWITZ - MENDELE MOCHER SFORIM, 1836(?)-1917

Mendele Mokher Sepharim: Bibliography of his Works and Lettersfor the Academic Edition (Hebrew), edited by Shmuel Werses andChone Shmeruk, Jerusalem, 1965, and the emendations to it made bythe Mendele Project of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Instituteof Jewish Studies, served as the bibliographic foundation for theAbramowitz collection. At the end of each citation in the Yiddish-language list in this catalog, there appears, in parentheses, thecorresponding item number in the Mendele Bibliography where adetailed bibliographic description will be found.

Only two volumes of Ale ksovim of 1888-1889 and one volume ofAle ksovim of 1907 were published. The incomplete Soviet criticaledition, Gezamlte verk, 1935-1940, has been included. Only fourvolumes (5 books) of this edition have appeared.

Apparently, individual issues of Sh. J. Abramowitz's Nitslikherkalendar were published for each year between 1877 and 1885. Wewere able to locate only those issues which appear on our list.

We were not able to locate or obtain the following books whichshould have been included in this collection:

Pi takse, Zhitomir, 1869Per luft balon, Zhitomir, 1868Shloyme R1 Khaims, Lublin, 1903Bo'u heshbon, Zhitomir, 1866

The first part of the second version of Sh. J. Abramowitz's DosVintshfingerl appears in the two volumes of Pi Yudishe Folks-bibliothek in the Sholom Aleichem section. (See ad. loc.)

SHOLOM ALEICHEM - Sh. RABINOWITZ, 1858-1916

The following works served as a bibliographic basis for the SholomAleichem collection: Dov ben Moshe (i.e. Ber Borochov), "DiBibliografie fun Sholem Aleikhem," Di Zukunft, New York 21:721-723,801-803, 893-895, 1062-1064 (1916), reprinted in B. Borochov, Shprakh-forshung un Literatur Geshikhte, Tel-Aviv, 1966, pp. 248-267, and themanuscript for the Sholom Aleichem article, by Chone Shmeruk, toappear in the eighth volume of the Biographical Dictionary of ModernYiddish Literature (Yiddish).

The fifteenth volume of the jubilee edition, Ale Verk, 1910-1915,never appeared.

The collection Fargesene Bletlekh and the three volumes of AleVerk, Moscow, 1948 (no more published) have been included amongthe collected works of Sholom Aleichem. These two collectionsinclude reprints of writings of Sholom Aleichem which were omittedfrom the Folksfond edition of Ale Verk fun Sholem Aleykhem and itsnumerous reprintings.

Since Sholom Aleichem himself authorized IU. I. Pinus' Russiantranslation of his works, and the translation was prepared accordingto Sholom Aleichem's instructions, we have included this eight-volume Russian edition, Sobranie Sochinenii, Moscow: SobremennyiaProblemy, 1910-1913.

In the section "Individual works" are included all of SholomAleichem's writings which appeared in the series "Bikher far Ale" inWarsaw. The individual items in the series "Familyen Bibliotek,"Warsaw, 1909-1915, have not been included, with the exception ofMoshkele Ganef, since most of these are reprints from variouscollections of Sholom Aleichem's works and appear in our collectionin any case.

We were not able to locate or obtain copies of the following bookswhich should have been included in this collection:

Natasha, St. Petersburg, 1884Hekher un Nidriger, St. Petersburg, 1884Per Mabl, Warsaw, 1907Sobranie Sochinenii, Moscow, 1910-1913, Vol. 3

Separate editions of Sholom Aleichem's novels which appeared firstin his Yudishe Folks-bibliothek have not been included.
