Guide Valve Limited, established in 1981 with its headquarters in Canada, specializes in the manufactur-ing of bolted body trunnion mounted ball valves.

Brand named GVS, our products are based on the most advanced technologies and are used in all sectors from petrochemical refining and processing to transportation and distribution of the end product.

The purpose of this catalogue is to give detailed, technical information on the design features of GVS, bolted body ball valves.

COMPANY PROFILE

To prevent any overpressure of fluids trapped in the isolated body cavity, all above ground valves can be equipped with a relieving device (self relieving seats or external relief system), on request.

The GVS valve comes standard with a pressure safety relief valve. The purpose of the valve is to have a means to relieve any pressure in the body cavity that can build up due to the design of the valve.

It is important to note that, when testing the valves in line, if the client intends to exceed 1.1 times the ASME class, the pressure relief valve should be removed and replaced with a solid plug, as they will pop/relieve on the test.

Each pressure relief valve supplied has a red tag which reads: “Important Information. This safety relief valve is designed for liquid release service only. Please remove if not applicable and replace with a solid plug if the media is in a full gas and no chance of thermal expansion can occur.”

DOUBLE BLOCK & BLEED AND O.H.&S.

Specifying a double block and bleed valve does not necessarily mean the valve meets the criteria outlined by O.H.&S.

By definition to O.H.& S. a trunnion mounted valve must have a primary seat, a secondary seat (not self-relieving) and a means of checking the integrity of the seats.

To truly meet specification and be sure you are getting a valve per definition it is best to ask for “independent seats”, “double isolation seats” or “piston style” seats.

The GVS double block and bleed design does not have self-relieving seats and meets the O.H.&S criteria for block and bleed service and DIB service.

API has changed their spec to read “DIB” which is double isolation and block.

Fluid trapped between the seat rings can be bled even when the valve is open.

At low pressure the resin seat is more of a Protector for it does not touch the ball’s outer surface. This is why we state that the insert seat is a protector. The Delta elastomeric shaped seat is always in full contact to the ball at low & high pressure, providing a seat to ball shut-off at all times.

At higher pressure the complete seat assembly is being pushed against the ball, and the insert resin seat (Protector) eventually does come in contact to the ball’s outer surface. At this elevated pressure the Protector acts as a seat seal in addition of being a protector and also acting as a scrapper thus wiping off any debris that may be against the ball’s outer surface.

Note: the “metal to metal + soft seated” design provides the added feature of metal seated ball valves.

SEATS DESIGN

Metal to Metal Seats

These seats are manufactured for applications with abrasive fluids (i.e. sand), corrosive fluids (i.e. acids) at times with high temperatures and pressures. The ball and the seat are hardfaced using different coatings such as chromium carbide, tungsten carbide or stellite depending on the fluid to be handled. Special seat designs are available to suit the applications.

Balls Surface Treatment

The request for the “metal to metal” seals is considerably increasing in applications with temperatures superior to 250ºC, where the traditional structure of the seat with plastic, polymeric or elastomeric inserts, often is not able to suit the application. On the contrary, the “metal to metal” solution is ideal also to control the flow of gas and impure fluids containing sand, minerals, etc. Technologically advanced solutions of “coating” are available and tested for these specific applications. These solutions allow to reach superficial hardness of steels to 1250 HV, through tungsten carbide or chromium carbide coating.

DESIGN FEATURES

•Bolted body type GB1 and B1

•Full and reduced bore

•All forged steel body and trim

•Antistatic device

•Trunnion-mounted, double block and bleed

•Stem detachable from the ball and anti-blow-out design

•O.H.&S and/or self-relieving seats

•Bubble-tight seat seals

•Emergency stem and seat seals provide a fully-contained sealant injection back-up system

•Low operating pure torque

•Minimum three stem seals

•Ball loads are distributed over large surface areas of two self-lubricating bearings, enabling them to work under a low specific pressure thus reducing wear

•Very low bending loads are exerted on the trunnions

•Trunnion thrust is directly applied to the valve body zones which are nearest to the pipe wall, minimizing bending loads on the valve body

•As the stem is designed detachable from the ball, trunnion loads are wholly transmitted to the valve body without affecting the stem, as pure operating torque is transmitted to the ball by the stem

•Ball bubble-tightness is achieved with two independent floating seat rings. Each seat ring is of forged

DESIGN FEATURES

steel piece housing the body-side and ball-side seals. The seat rings are pushed against the ball by a set of seat springs to ensure efficient ball sealing at very low differential pressure. As differential pressure increases through the valve, each seat ring is line-pressure energized. Depending on the specific design of the body-side seal, the seat rings carry out two different ball sealing actions

•Double isolation ball sealing (standard design). As each seat ring is of bidirectional type, the displacement of the body-side o-ring pushes each seat ring ever towards the ball, regardless of the fluid pressure distribution through the valve

•This redundant sealing system forms a double barrier against the fluid, ensuring valve shut-off by the downstream seat ring if the one upstream fails. A pressure relief valve is fitted to the vent connection of the body cavity when any thermal expansion of the fluid trapped between the seat rings may cause a dangerous overpressure

•Self-relieving ball seating The fluid is shut-off solely by the upstream seat rings. As each seat ring is of single-directional type, each seat ring is pushed towards the ball only if the pressure in the body cavity is lower than the line pressure (single-directional seat ring type). Any overpressure of the fluid trapped in the body cavity overcoming the mechanical load of the springs pushes the seat ring away from the ball and excess pressure is automatically relieved back into the line

As an excess of impurities in fluids may have a harmful effect on seat ring seals, GVS GB1 valves are equipped for emergency restoration of seals.

This consists of special holes and grooves in the seat rings and valve body through which sealants are injected. Each body injection port is equipped with an inner check valve and a grease button head fitting.

Emergency Seat Sealing

•This seat insert is shaped like a triangle “Delta” with rounded corners, which is clamped into it’s housing by means of a metal ring. This seat’s unique geometry offers several advantages

•Due to the high elasticity of the seat insert, it ensures sealing even on partly damaged ball surfaces

•The seat insert cannot rotate in it’s seat ring housing, preventing extrusion in the event of fluid flashing with a partially open valve

DESIGN FEATURES

OPERATORSGVS ball valves may be operated either manually or by power operators.

MANUAL REDUCING GEARSIn most manual reducers, operating torque is transmitted to the ball via a conventional handwheel-worm gear. The system, housed in a watertight casing with an indicator for ball position, is 100% grease lubricated. The ball’s 90° rotation is regulated by adjustable limit stops.

STEM EXTENSIONSValves or valves installed under ground or in inaccessible areas may be equipped with stem and auxiliary (drain, vent, sealant, actuator power) piping extensions. Like the valve, stem extensions can be bled and their attachments are interchangeable with the direct valve actuator assembly.

TRANSITION PIECES OR PUPS

GVS ball valves can be manufactured with transition pieces (pups) to customers specifications, i.e. lengths, thickness and materials. We also have the capability to offer special coatings and complete valve assemblies per client’s requirements.

EXPLOSIVE DECOMPRESSIONAll of the elastic compounds present a permeability to gases at different levels. The pressured gas penetrates below the o-ring surface forming air pockets in the intermolecular spaces. The quantity of gas absorbed depends on the type of compound and of the gas in contact with it, from the temperature and the exercised pressure. The instance described previous can be the cause of damage to the o-ring, if it is followed by an abrupt reduction in pressure and the consequent dilation of the ring, the gas included in the compound has an explosive behavior. The explosion of the air pockets contained in the compound causes the laceration of the o-ring surfaces. All B1 and GB1 series valves have standard type seals which are AED, “Anti-explosive decompression”.

FIRE PROTECTIONGVS ball valves are “Fire Safe” certified to meet international standards.

COATING FEATURES

IPC SERIES 3000IPC Series 3000 is a nickel super alloy coating that imparts superior corrosion resistance and added wear resistance to the base material being coated. It is a thin film coating with a typical thickness of 25-75 microns which requires no pre or post machining in valve seat pockets or critical dimension areas. IPC Series 3000 has a grain free amorphous structure with excellent barrier corrosion protection. The IPC Series 3000 coating has the morphology similar to that of a metallic glass coating. This absence of a well defined crystal structure eliminates the possibility of intergranular corrosion inherent in many crystalline coatings.

Uniformity:Due to the unique chemical reduction process that the IPC Series 3000 utilizes, the deposit uniformity has less than 2% variation over the entire valve’s surface. Notice the uniformity of the coating even in deep recesses.

Corrosion Resistance:IPC Series 3000 coating is a true barrier protective coating. It provides an excellent barrier between corrosive environments and the valve surface. The amorphous nature of the IPC Series 3000 coating is advantageous in enabling the coating to withstand very severe corrosive environments where typically only exotic alloys have been used. The IPC Series 3000 coating is especially effective in high CO2 and H2S environments, whether alone or in combination. The IPC Series 3000 has an impressive track record of protecting base metals in corrosive environments for many years, and is a cost effective alternative to full stainless steel or other types of exotic alloys.

IPC SYSTEM 3 MODIFIEDIPC System 3 Modified is a fluoropolymer based coating that flows during the curing process to provide a non-porous protective film. IPC System 3 Modified has excellent corrosion resistance to many harsh chemicals as well as an extremely low coefficient of friction to give a high level of release and non-stick properties. IPC System 3 Modified is typically 25-75 microns in thickness, and is an alternative to IPC Series 3000 in high chloride services where there is an absence of H2S.

IPC System 3 Modified is a multiple coat system which has been successfully applied and used in the Oil and Gas industry for over 20 years. It is a thin film coating which requires no pre or post machining in seat pockets or critical dimension areas. With a positive track record in many harsh environments, IPC System 3 Modified can be an excellent alternative when dealing with corrosion that is common to many components seen in the production and transmission of oil and gas and where the need for corrosion protection is required.
