SummerInternships:ManyMPHstudentsareinterestedinasummerinternshiporresearchexperienceaftertheirfirstyear.Globalhealth-relevantexperiencescanbefoundwithdomesticandinternationalorganizations.MPHstudentsdesiringaninternationalexperienceshouldstronglyconsiderapplyingtoPenn’sInternationalInternshipProgram(IIP)whichofferstravel-fundedinternshipswithpartnerorganizationsinseveralcountries.DomesticexperiencescanfoundwithglobaldevelopmentorganizationsororganizationsthatreducehealthdisparitieswithintheU.S.Studentscanapplytoestablishedinternshipsorconductresearchprojectsoftheirown.Summerprojectscanoftenbeusedtowardsthefieldworkrequirementorcapstonewithadvancepreparation.Inthissectionoftheguideyouwillfindaselectionofinternational,domestic,established,andcapstoneinternshipstoconsiderwhenlookingforasummerinternship.

TheUniversityofPennsylvaniaoffersafullyfunded8to12weeksummerinternshipforPennstudentsatorganizationsthatareaffiliatedwithPennabroad.ThereisawidevarietyofplacementorganizationstochoosefromthataremainlynongovernmentalorganizationslocatedinLatinAmerica,Africa,Asia,andotherregions.TheBotswana-UPennPartnership(BUP),GuatemalaHealthInitiative,andCenterforAdvancedStudyofIndia(CASI)areexamplesofplacementsthataregreatforstudentsinterestedinworkingwithlocalorganizations.ThefulllistofplacementscanbeviewedonPennGlobal’swebsite.TheapplicationtoapplytoanyoftheseinternshipsthroughtheInternationalInternshipProgram(IIP)commonapplicationopensinNovember,withthedeadlinetoapplyinmid-January.ThereareinformationsessionsheldweeklyfromNovembertoJanuary.

2. Practicewithinyourabilities.Itiseasytooverestimateyourabilitiesortobelievethatanyhelpishelpwheninalowresourcesetting.Itisbesttoworkwithinyourabilitiesandaskforhelpfromyourlocalsupervisorsandfaculty.
3. Adequatelyresearchthecurrentevents,socialandculturalbeliefsofthecommunitybeforeenteringit.Anapproachsuitableinonecommunitymaynotbesuitableinanother.Conflictsinhealthbeliefsandpracticesmayarisethatresultinnoncomplianceormistrustofthehealthcaresystem.
