Winter 2013

Greetings Scouts and Leaders from the trails of Beaumont Scout Reservation.

Planning for Webelos Resident Camp started this fall. The program team realized that with the start of Cub Scout Resident Camp for Wolfs and Bears, we needed to create more excitement about Webelos Resident Camp. Suggestions made by Scouts, leaders, staff, and parents went into making the 2014 program even more dynamic and relevant for today’s scouts. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is the theme for this year’s camp. We plan to engage Webelos Scouts in learning all about STEM subjects. This year Scouts will choose their focus in 5 different subjects

To ensure that each of these programs is successful, we are again focusing our preseason attention on staffing. We will recruit the BEST staff Beaumont Scout Reservation has ever seen.

As always Phil Williams, our Program Director, or I is available to come speak about camp with your den; just let us know when.

I look forward to seeing you at Beaumont in 2014.

Sincerely yours in Scouting,

Carl G. Boyles

Pioneer Honor Camper ProgramBeaumont Scout Reservation has a long lost Honor Camper Program. While scouring the depths of Beaumont history this great recognition program was uncovered. The Pioneer Program has been updated to correspond to today’s advancement requirements, a dynamic Beaumont schedule, and modern camping principles.

The Pioneer Honor Camper Program gives WEBELOS Scouts new and exciting methods to gain Scout skills needed for advancement, plus develops leadership skills and allows Scouts to gain recognition for their adventure at Beaumont.

Daily Programing Schedule

At Cub Scout Adventure Camp, the Scouts and parents travel together as Dens to partic-ipate in each activity offered during Adventure Camp. In an effort to prepare Webelos for the transition to Boy Scouts, Webelos STEM Camp takes a different format for pro-gramming. Just like at Boy Scout camp, Webelos will have the option to choose from several different program tracks. These program tracks give Webelos the opportunity to do crafts, play sports, and learn new skills. What is different from Cub Scout Adventure Camp is that not every Webelos Scout will particpate in every activity.

In keeping with the theme of STEM, Webelos will have 5 different program tracks to choose from. Webelos Scouts will choose 2 of these tracks to participate in on Day 2 and Day 3 of Webelos STEM camp. The different program tracks are: Building and Engineer-ing, Fluid Dynamics, Projectile Dyanmics, Backcountry Science, and Strength and Speed Building. Webelos Scouts will also have the opportunity to participate in open program time for the activities that are not a part of the program tracks they elect to take.

The studies of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are an important part of a young person’s studies. Many of the things we do in Scouting align with these subject areas. Webelos STEM camp explores Scouting activities and skills as they relate to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Building and Engineering

From couch forts to lego blocks Scouts love to build things. The Building and Engineering tract gives Webelos the opportunity to build different designs and learn about the engi-neering behind them. Scouts will learn about welding by welding chocolate bars together to create strong bridge structures. Welding is an important vocation that allows us to travel the country and build structures as high as the sky. Webelos will compete to build bridges that hold the most weight.

The Building and Engineering track also explores how Scouts can build planes out of foam plates. They will learn to design gliders that fly father and fasters. Scouts will also design two liter bottle rockets that fly the highest. This track is for the Webelos Scout interested in building, design, or aviation. Scouts can take home their planes and bottle rockets to continue to learn how to design.

icsProjectile Dynamics

Every Cub Scout loves to shoot. Scouts will learn more about shooting and what it takes to be the best shot. Webelos Scouts will shoot Archery, Air Rifle, Paint Ball, and Wrist Rockets. Scouts will learn how the compound bow works and how the CO2 air rifle propels its pellets. They will also build marshmallow catapults to take home with them. This track is for Webelos who want to get better at Archery and Shooting. They will learn about proper technique and how to become more accurate. Shooting is also available during open program time on Day 2 and Day 3.

Commissioner service is a vital part of the overall camp experience at Beaumont Scout Reservation. The Greater Cleveland Council is blessed to have a dedicated group of commissioners that volunteer to serve all summer long as part of the commissioner staff at Beaumont Scout Reservation.

Camp Commissioners are here to give you personal help during your week in camp. This friendly member of staff will provide answers to questions and solutions for needs. They are here to serve as liaisons between the site leader and the staff. The commissioners are available to provide immediate help in meeting specific and urgent needs and daily needs. Look forward to them providing and guiding inter-unit and camp activities, as well as trying to build spirit and enthusiasm in their assigned units. You may call upon your commissioner to help plan den campfires and hikes or just to chat. Throughout your week in camp, you should be in constant communication with your camp commis-sioner.

Many different types of equipment/tools are available for check out from the Quarter-

Helping Scouts Prepare for Summer CampFor new Scouts, it is important to set the expectation of what summer camp will be like. Paint a picture of what the different program areas have to offer and which ones appeal to each Scout individually. Help each youth set achievable goals as they plan out their week. Guide each Scout to understand his needs and abilities when making program-ming decisions.

In order to make sure that each Scout has an enjoyable time at summer camp, it is important that he be properly equipped for the week. Carefully review the personal equipment list with each Scout and tailor it for his needs and activities.

It is important to have the Scouts review the available program options at camp and plan their schedule.

Lastly, discuss in depth with parents what will happen during the week. A knowledge-able parent will make the planning, preparation, and execution of summer camp a lot easier.
