Guided Math Whats Next? Adopted from resources provided by the Cobb County District K-5 Math Coaches What is Guided Math? One component of a balanced mathematics program Students learn in small flexible groups based on instructional level Students work in appropriate standards- based workstations Computation Challenge 5-10 Minutes Whole group, small group, and/or partner games to build computation skills (FASTT MATH, timed tests) Math RAP Minutes Review and Practice of the GA Performance Standards Mini-Lesson Minutes Whole group standards- based lesson Work Time Minutes Small group reteach, conferencing &/or extension Collaborative problem- solving Workstations Manipulative discovery and connections Summary 5-10 Minutes Review important concepts Reflect Total Time100 Minutes What does Guided Math look like? Includes: Centers based on the standards Students working independently, in groups, and/or with teacher Teachers formally and informally assessing student progress A part of math instruction 3 or more days a week How do I set up my groups? Groups made from Benchmark Data by standard Group according to analysis of standards, not total missed questions Can have 2-3 groups Groups can/should change regularly based on student understanding Example taken from 5 th Grade EIP Math Standard Far to Go 0-50% Close to Proficient 51%-69% Proficient 70%+ Use variables such as n or x, for unknown quantities, when multiplying by 10, 100, 1,000, 0.1, 0.01 Mahogany Paola Rachel Jashua Mumin Mark Quetzi Diamond Jacqueline Harley Cory Asha Leonel Jessie Frankie Vanessa Models multiplication and division of decimals by another decimal Quetzi Diamond Paola Jacqueline Cory Mahogany Rachel Vanessa Mark Leonel Mumin Jessie Frankie Guided Math Centers Set up around the room on desks, tables, or bulletin boards (remember technology-SMART board) Put materials in tubs, folders, zip-loc bags, etc. Based on concepts to maintain and/or current concepts being taught Should be differentiated by Blooms Guided Math Students... Keep work in progress in a folder Keep a record of which centers they complete daily/weekly along with any products in a workshop folder Are accountable for keeping up with center work, recording completed center daily/weekly Guided Math Teachers... Set up standards-based centers based on student needs (use formative assessments, benchmarks) Lead whole group discussion about the centers at least once a week (Mondays) Develop a system for recording what the students are doing in the centers How do I get started with centers? Decide on centers: GPS from weeks mini-lessons GPS concepts to maintain Extension of previously taught GPS Multiple intelligence Fluency building activity Be sure centers are authentic, standards- based activities and not busy work. Ideas for Centers Technology: Smartboard, computer Standards-Based Games: card games, etc. Problem Solving: Exemplars, Logic, Problem-Solving Deck Math Journals Fluency Building Activities: timed tests, flash cards, etc. Guided Manipulative Exploration: geoboards, measurement, etc. Where Can I Find Standards-Based Centers? Games that review previously taught skills Georgia Math Frameworks on PICASSO Exemplars Challenge Book from Math adaption Math Task Cards Mega Math, FASTT MATH, illuminations internet4classrooms.com What Now? Decide on rules and routines Set up groups Create a schedule Develop accountability form Plan group and mini-lessons Design centers Set up Rules and Routines Set up expectations WITH students, and develop anchor charts for students to refer to. Develop a clear understanding that both the teacher and the students have responsibilities during guided math. Set up Groups and Create a Schedule Post groups and schedules in an area where students easily see their center responsibility for the day. Set up Groups and Create a Schedule Develop Accountability System and Guided Math Lesson Plans You can create as much or as little student accountability as you would like.
