Guided Reading is about explicitlyteachingthe knowledge, skills, strategies andbehaviours that good readers know and do.
It is NOT Round Robin reading.
It is NOT testing students.
Guided Reading IS: supporting childrens learning through modelling,
coaching and scaffolding discussion and reading around
a suitable text

Take time to set up the structures andexpectations around Guided Reading.
The teacher running the GR session is not tobe disturbed.
Therefore the class needs to be able to self-manage for 20-30mins.

Guided Reading groups are informed throughyour observations of students reading.
I use PM Benchmarking assessments but youcan use anecdotal notes or other forms of
assessment. The key is that they are at a similar level and
have similar reading needs. Group size 2-6. The independent groups are made by
splitting up behaviour and personalityconcerns and the guided reading groupsamongst them.

The independent groups are MIXED-ABILITY.This is so they can support each other andalso provides more opportunity to split upbehaviour concerns.
The Guided Reading groups are LIKE-ABILITYgroups.
Spread the kids out amongst the groups and
then pull 1 or 2 students from each group towork with you in Guided Reading.

This is a life saver! Need to teach all of the activities first so the
independent groups know what to do.
Rotate the activities around each session. Margaret Menner resources offer lots of ideas.
NOTE: Hardly any prep required for theactivities and NO marking!!
The m ain focus is the Guided reading group

In a typical Literacy Block, follow the GRMmodel from First Steps whole class, smallgroup, independent.
The small group component (Guided Reading)goes for 20-30 minutes depending on age, ability, needs, time available ;-)
Good idea to set a timer!
Modelled / Shared Reading does notnecessarily have to match the Guided Readinggroup focus.

Select appropriate text based on reading leveland needs**
Not all kids will be at exactly the same level ineach Guided Reading group, but they should
be at similar levels. It is important that the teacher reads the text
beforehand and plans the learning focus anddesired outcomes.
EAs can run GR groups at the same time orother times, generally a good idea for theclass teacher to plan.

Introduce and model the focus readingstrategy for the session.

Students read silently to themselves and workon the set questions/strategy usingwhiteboards.
You take the opportunity to listen to each
student read to you quietly, focussing on thestrategy modelled at the beginning of thesession. Take anecdotal notes as you go(handy when it comes to report writing!).
Listen to each student for a short time. If youdont get through them all, listen to theothers in the next session.

Revisit and review the focus strategy and guidingquestion.
Reflect on the session.
Perhaps set small goals for students to focus on
in silent reading or home reading.
Feedback from all group leaders at the end helps build in accountability for their behaviourand on-taskness!
Opportunity for Readers Theatre group topresent their skit and Fact Finders to share theirfacts.

Try for 3-4 times a week during Literacyblock.
Ideally its good to see each group once aweek but be FLEXIBLE!
Sometimes you might need to see a grouptwo days in a row.
Sometimes the groups shift around,
depending on needs and rates ofimprovement.
