FINANCIAL AIDDeadline: January 4Financial aid is available for adults and children based on need and interest. CANCELLATION, REFUND, AND PRIVACY POLICIESIf a program is oversubscribed when a student’s payment is received, the student will be notified and the full amount will be refunded or may be applied toward another course. If a class or workshop is canceled due to insufficient enrollment, students will be notified and full tuition will be refunded or may be applied toward another course. Students who withdraw from a class or workshop up to two weeks before the first class are eligible for a full refund. Up to one week before the first class, students who withdraw are eligible for a credit, less a $25 registration fee. After that, consideration can only be given with a written medical excuse, or in the case of other extraordinary circumstances. Credits may only be for classes going forward from the date excuse is received by Guilford Art Center.

Students missing a regularly scheduled class will not receive a refund or a makeup class.

Classes not held due to bad weather or instructor’s absence will be rescheduled, usually at the end of the semester. Call 203.453.5947 for weather cancellations, which will be announced on the main message line.

We continue to find new ways to forge connections and educational offerings at GAC. The winter semester maintains our hybrid approach, which offers classes and workshops that take place on-campus as well as online. Class sizes for on-campus gatherings will continue to be limited to 50% capacity and with a strict masking

mandate and all other protocols in place, in order to operate safely.

INTRODUCTION TO PEYOTE STITCH WORKSHOP

Peyote stitch dates back to ancient Egypt, evidenced by artifacts found in King Tut-ankhamun tomb. In North America, Native Americans, namely the Kiowa and Comanche tribes, also used the stitch and named it. This off-loom beading technique creates both flat bands and structural shapes. In this class, you will learn flat, odd-count peyote to create a flat and fluid bracelet. All it takes is Fireline thread, a beading needle and delica seed beads. By using the same basic thread path, the beads will align with one another. Once you have woven the band, the instructor will demonstrate how to attach it to the clasp. Fee payable with tuition $21.00.

INTRO TO THE HAND FORGED BLADE WORKSHOP

This weekend workshop will cover the basics of forging, grinding, heat treating, and sharp-ening of a small utility knife. The instructor will discuss fit and finish, overall knife design, how to sharpen and care for knives, and how to begin making knives on your own. Students should expect to forge several blades over the weekend, and get at least one to the point of a usable knife. Fee payable with tuition $45.00.


BEADINGWIRE NECKLACE DESIGN WORKSHOP

Learn how to recreate an exquisite gemstone bead and wire necklace. The instructor will demonstrate the skills you will use in crafting this piece and in future projects including: wire-wrapping beads, coiled bead, Celtic knot, S hook clasp and infinity connector. Fee payable with tuition $30.00.


WIRE WORKSHOP: WOVEN BEZEL PENDANT

Create a stunning bezel to capture a gem-stone cabochon by learning to weave with wire. If you can wrap a wire around another one, you can master this timeless technique. The back side of the pendant features wire swirls to keep the stone secure, but it’s pretty enough to make this pendant reversible. Once you’ve made this bezel, never be intim-idated again by complex designs. After all, it’s only wire. Fee payable with tuition $25.00.


ATTENTION BLACKSMITHING STUDENTS! Students will need safety glasses, leather work gloves, (welding

gauntlets not needed) and should wear jeans, a non-flammable cotton shirt

and/or jacket, and closed-toed boots or leather shoes. Our forge is an outdoor

building that is only semi-enclosed; please dress accordingly. For full-day workshops,

please bring a lunch to be on the safe side, as there may or may not be time to

get food during a lunch break.

THE WAR HAMMER WORKSHOP

FORGING LADLES & SPOONS WORKSHOP

Forge your own useful and beautiful ladle, per-fect for soup season! Start with basic forging techniques, making a “warm up” spoon. The bowl of the ladle will be hand hammered out of sheet metal. Different skills will be shown for forging the handle, including shouldering, splitting, twisting and braiding. The bowl and the handle will be riveted together, just in time for partaking of chili or soup at the end of class! Fee payable with tuition $40.00.


CERAMIC SCULPTURE

For experienced students who would like to work sculpturally in clay, taking full advantage of everything that a ceramics studio can offer. Students will be introduced to ways of exper-imenting, working and thinking as sculptors, as well as techniques for constructing forms, building surfaces and firing. This course serves as an introduction to vari-ous techniques in jewelry and metal-working with an emphasis on design, metal forming, and fabrication, basic stone setting, sur-face embellishment, and creative problem solving. CERAMICSTECHNIQUES OF HAND BUILDING

A demonstration-only format. Each week the instructor will focus on a different hand building technique and ways in which it can be used. One or two pieces will be demon-strated start to finish during the classes. Both functional and sculptural considerations will be addressed. Students will be able to ask questions and take notes. During the last class surface design techniques will be used on several of the forms produced in the first three classes. Please note: Clay is not meant to be used in the home. Do you have a sketchbook just sitting on a shelf because you liked the idea of keeping one, but got intimidated by all those white pages? This demo is about getting past that fear and jumping in. Materials you will need are a sketchbook (however a couple sheets of paper will do), pencils, a black fine line marker, a magazine with photos, scissors, and glue stick or glue. If you have some color markers, a few colored pencils, and some watercolor, bring that too. Make time to play and then your creativity will flow!

We had so much fun with Sketchbook Re-vival this summer that we have to keep it going! Whether you took the summer class or not, you are welcome to join as I will be introducing new ways to play. Let’s get that sketchbook off the shelf and jump in! You can use whatever materials you have for pencils, markers, and watercolor. Subject matter and styles will vary from observational to fantasy. I will introduce ideas, share tips, and give demos at the beginning of each class. Then, everyone will sketch, paint, and play. While you are painting, you can ask questions and I will do mini demos to answer them for those who want to watch. This course is open to students of all levels; some drawing experi-ence is helpful but not required.

FIBERPATTERN MAKING, DRAPING 3: THE FUNDAMENTAL TOOLS OF DESIGN

In this intermediate college-level course, each student will learn additional fundamentals of pattern-making and draping. Students will gain a broader knowledge of pattern making through the paper draft, first muslin samples, and fit techniques; construct variations on gar-ments such as jacket, coats, and sleeve details to get an understanding of how working in two-three-dimensional pattern/draping helps to execute garment design.


SEWING 2: BASIC APPAREL CONSTRUCTION

For students with sewing experience. In this course, each student will build on basic sewing skills. Through a complete working knowledge of the sewing machine, students will apply sewing techniques learned in sew-ing 1. The student will practice hand-sewing techniques, seam details, and finishes, zipper application, as well as buttonhole construc-tion (machine and hand-bound), etc. The student will learn how to correctly insert a fitted sleeve, construct shirt-tail collars, yokes, and plackets. These students will take with him/her working garment samples.

Winter is another fun season to paint in watercolor. We will paint with a fresh, ex-perimental approach. We’re going to play with watercolor and not worry about mak-ing masterpieces. This demo will give you a good idea of my teaching style, and how the upcoming class will run. If you want to receive a jpeg of the photo we will be working from, you need to register by December 30th. Supplies (if you want to paint along with me): watercolor paint- tubes or pans, for demo any brand is fine, pencil (I use a 6B), watercolor brushes: You can use what you have. I will be using a #12 round and a large Princeton Neptune Quill #6 watercolor brush approx. 1/2” diameter, watercolor paper or mixed media paper (good sketchbook paper will work too), cup for water, palette or plastic plate, paper towels.

Polymer clay is a very versatile material. It can be made into jewelry, ornaments, small sculptures and more. It can also be used to cover objects. You don’t need a lot of tools to get started and not much space is needed to store everything. This class will cover learning about the different types of polymer clay available, how to care for your clay, how to mix clays, how to form the clay and how to bake it. The instructor will demonstrate techniques and show finished examples. If you have used polymer clay previously this could be a great time to reconnect with the medium. Returning students are encouraged to attend.

INTRO TO CLAY FOR TWEENS AND TEENS

Open to ages 10-14. Discover awesome properties of clay and its possibilities with throwing and hand building. Students will get dirty and bend, tear, twist, shape, mold, scratch, impress, cut, and pinch pieces of clay to form functional and non-functional pieces, which will be fired and glazed. We will work with the potter’s wheel and hand building to form each individual piece. Fee payable with tuition $30.00.

Students will learn to build with clay using several different techniques. We will be using white self-hard-ening clay. When dry, our work will be painted and a sealer can be applied if desired. Open to students new to clay as well as returning students.

Students may use teacher suggestions as a starting point for their art work or pursue their own ideas. The last class will be used to create a three-dimensional work incorpo-rating elements from all three of the natural habitats.
