CROW’S NESTVol. XIX, No. 20 www.guilfordcollegeumc.org October 23, 2019

Pastor’s NoteDear Church,

In writing of his time working with Mother Teresa of Calcutta's Sisters of Charity in India, a Christian named Shane Claiborne tells of how he and some other volunteers would minister to the street children there, working with kids who had no parents and no place to go.

Shane describes how on one blistering hot summer Indian day, he learned that it was a particular homeless child’s birthday. So Shane went out on this hot day and bought the little boy a celebratory chocolate ice cream cone. He called the boy over, and tried to hand the boy his melting gift. The boy just stared at the ice cream cone in Shane’s hand. Shane said, “It’s Ok, it’s for you, it’s a birthday present for you. Happy Birthday!” Finally the little boy seemed to understand. He grabbed the ice cream cone and held it in his hand. He looked at it for the longest time. Then he took one long slow lick of the ice cream like he was savoring every inch.

Shane never forgot what the little boy did next. The boy grinned from ear to ear. Then, cone still in hand, he ran over to all the other kids and shouted, “You guys, you guys, WE’VE got ice cream!!” Then the boy had all the other children line up, and one by one, each child would take a turn coming forward, sticking out his or her tongue, and taking a big lick of the birthday boy’s ice cream until it was all gone.

Shane Claiborne ends that story by saying that the little boy who shared his ice cream cone taught him a lesson he has never forgotten. The lesson is, “The best thing to do with the best things in life is to give them away.”

I have been thinking about that little boy as our congregation approaches Commitment Sunday on October 27th. Prior to this Sunday all of us are invited to spend some intentional time thinking and praying about what of our personal and financial gifts God is calling us to share through the Church next year. We hope you will fill out both the spiritual gifts inventory and the estimate of giving card that were part of our stewardship mailing, and bring them with you to worship on the 27th. If you did not receive or pick up the packet, we will have extras on hand for you to fill out this Sunday, or you can also visit our website and fill out an online commitment card - and if you won't be present in worship this Sunday, just bring them with you the next time you are with us.

My own experience has taught me that becoming generous isn't something that happens by accident. It's something we cultivate over time by being intentional and by stretching and challenging ourselves. Just like consistent exercise can help us to tone and strengthen our bodies, we grow into greater generosity and strengthen our "giving muscles" through each act of sharing that we make. I think of the weekly offering in church as generosity practice or sacrificial strength training. Our annual Commitment Sunday is another opportunity to give focused attention to this aspect of our lives, and to grow in our capacity to give.

And yet I have also learned that true generosity comes not just from practice, but from developing a particular mindset towards all the gifts we have received in life. Generosity flows naturally from us when we truly begin to understand that we are always blessed not only for our own sake, but in order to transmit and pass on blessing to others.

To put it another way, generosity happens when our mindset changes from merely thinking "I am so blessed to receive this gift" to also announcing, "WE'VE got ice cream!"

God has given to each of us so many beautiful gifts. WE have been given so much ice cream to share with each other. The best thing we can do with these best gifts in life is to give them away: because letting God grow a giving spirit is the best and most precious gift of all.

Grace and Peace,Jeremy

Thank You from Vita Alligood Thank you very much for all of your support in September for two ministries that are near and dear to my heart. Yokefellow Prison Ministry (statewide) and Tabitha Ministry (Summerfield). As shared in the last newsletter, GCUMC was generous in donations as well as in attendance with the Yokefellow Prison Ministry WNO fundraiser. The turnout to hear new GCUMC member Rickey Vaughan, share his experience with Yokefellow Prison Ministry nearly doubled from the attendance to hear last year’s speaker. Thank you for your support and warm welcome to Rickey as a new church member. Support for the ladies from Tabitha Ministry as they shared an ASL interpretation of Mercy Me’s “I Can Only Imagine” during both services was also strong. The ladies appreciated the warm welcome and kind words of support from the congregation. One of the women, who will be graduating from the program on October 27, even received a job offer from a GCUMC member!

THE JESUS LIFESTYLEBased on the Sermon on the Mount. Our culture is obsessed by lifestyle. Magazines and websites tell us what to wear, how to get fit and what to drive. But Jesus lived, and taught about, a radically different kind of lifestyle. How to deal with anger. How to handle money. What to do when faced with difficult people.  In this engaging and fascinating book, Nicky Gumbel takes a closer look at the Sermon on the Mount and presents, with his familiar mix of humor and wisdom, the way Jesus tells us to live our lives.Leader: Bill Brubaker, [email protected] mornings 9:45-10:45 am.

ServingSupport Ben Lasley on Wednesday, November 6When Ben Lasley graduated college this spring, he was discerning a call from God to be in ministries of compassion and justice. The United Methodist Church provided him a great opportunity to live out that call. In August, Ben began a two-year stint as a Global Mission Fellow working among the poor in the inner city of Philadelphia, PA. Ben is

involved in numerous ministries of compassion and justice in that place. From tending a community garden to coordinating a free meal that serves up to 200 guests to being a leader in Arch Street UMC to advocating for change and improvements across the city, Ben already is sharing God’s love in very tangible ways in Philly after just two months. You can support the work of Ben and other similar domestic United Methodist missionaries by coming out to our Wednesday Night Meal on Wednesday, November 6 from 5:30-6:30 PM. You can give what you normally do on a Wednesday night, or give something extra if you are able. 100% of the net proceeds from the meal will go to the General Board of Global Ministries, which is supporting Ben in his work. If you wish to pray for Ben, here’s a prayer for community you could use:

I pray that you bless the ever-widening circle of people around Ben. May he know that he walks amongst a great cloud of witness, who stand with him, support him, and love him. May he know that both in his ministry and around this country there are people who love him for who he is, your child. May he never feel alone, may he find refuge in his community, and may he realize that creation is made good when it is enjoyed in community. In all things, may he know he is never alone for you are with him. Amen

As Thanksgiving Approaches, Take Time to Feed OthersOn Saturday, November 16 our church will be bagging 40,000 lbs. of white potatoes in the church parking lot. The gift of these spuds is thanks to the work of the Society of St. Andrew, which works to reclaim millions of pounds of produce that would otherwise go to waste and give it to people who would otherwise do without. We’ll receive the potatoes in huge bags loaded on pallets which we’ll then subdivide into 10 lb. mesh sacks suitable for handing out to individuals. About 35 different agencies, feeding ministries and churches will bring trucks to receive and later distribute the potatoes. We need 100 or more volunteers to help this project go quickly. We’ll start work at 9:00 AM and end at 1:00 PM, although folks can come late and leave early as needed. We’ll also have the opportunity to interact with many others from the community, especially Western Guilford High School, which considers this their senior project. There’s no need to signup, but if you have questions reach out to Pastor Matt at 336 292-5833 or [email protected].

Rise Against Hunger with Your Fellow United Methodists

Page 7: Guilford College United Methodist Church€¦ · Web viewGuilford College United Methodist Church Non-Profit Org. 1205 Fleming Road US POSTAGE PAID Greensboro, NC 27410 Permit #146

Many of you are well familiar with Rise Against Hunger. Since 2014, we have packed over 130,000 meals with RAH. A scoop each of rice, bean and veggie protein join a vitamin packet in a plastic bag that is then shipped and sealed to our hungry neighbors around the world. These bags are distributed is places where there are famines and natural disasters, as well as schools and orphanages. These meals are not only a blessing to those who receive them. It’s also a wonderfully fun, community-building exercise to pack them.Pastor Matt and Cathey Miller recently got to learn more on a visit to Rise Against Hunger’s international headquarters. They took Stanley and Mary Gitari for a meeting, in the hopes that our friends in Kenya might one day become the recipients of these life-saving meals. Whether our friends in Kenya become a recipient or not, that meeting solidified our enthusiasm for RAH and the work they’re doing to relieve hunger and build sustainable agriculture all around the world. They have a vision to end worldwide hunger by 2030. With your help, they can draw closer to achieving this noble goal. Our next Rise Against Hunger meal packaging will be held at GCUMC on Sunday, November 10. We need about 25 able-bodied people with strong backs to set up the Fellowship Hall and offload the truck from 1:30-3:00 PM that afternoon. We need at least 25 additional people, of all ages and ability levels, to help at 3 PM. We’re going to be joined by the eight other United Methodist Churches from our missional network and our District Superintendent Bev Coppley in packing 15,000 meals.Because so many different churches are participating, we’ll need people to sign up in advance this time around. To register, enter this address in your web browser and select set-up and/or meal packing: events.riseagainsthunger.org/GuilfordWest/GCUMC
