Kelly Clark led the Red Raiders to a 4-8 record as an interim coach in 2017; the interim tag was lifted in the summer of 2018, and Clark looks to lead Andrews for a second season. On defense, Andrews will be led by defensive back Braylen Brown (88 career tackles) and linebacker Isaiah Taylor, who collected 36 tackles and a sack during the 2017 season.

OUTLOOK:

Doug Robertson built a winning tradition at Eastern Guilford, now the task to continue that tradition belongs to Joe Glass — who was

named the next head coach of the Wildcats early in the spring.

Robertson exited Eastern Guilford to take the Thomasville job after

leading the 2017 Wildcats to a 12-3 record, losing in the state

semifinals to eventual champion, New Hanover.

OUTLOOK:

At Dudley, a program that's won three state titles since 2007, coach Stephen Davis doesn't rebuild; he reloads. The Panthers have plenty to replace, though: running back Zariek Rush-Foxworth (14 total touchdowns), quarterback Gerald Simpson and two-way player DJ Crossen, who signed with Virginia Tech.

Fortunately for Dudley, the Panthers have plenty of talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball — starting with linebackers Jurriente Davis and Landen Johnson, who combined for 262 tackles and nine sacks in 2017.

OUTLOOK: What had the potential to be a special year for Glenn (a 10-0 start) flipped quickly in 2017, when the Bobcats lost on Halloween, 17-14 at home to West Forsyth, to close the regular season; then, two weeks later, Glenn fell in overtime in the playoffs to Zebulon, 35-34.

This coaching staffs biggest challenge will be to replace 'all-everything' quarterback Stephon Brown (47 total touchdowns in 2017), who chose to continue his football career at Appalachian State.

• The Nighthawks have plenty of talent on defense, too, including veteran linebacker Christian Bass (155 tackles last season) and defensive back Bryce Johnson (three interceptions).

COACH'S COMMENTS:

Behind Ruben Thrasher and Johnny King along the offensive line, Southeast Guilford has an

impressive backfield: quarterback Ryan Douglas (1,749 yards, 25 total touchdowns) and running

back Chad Stephens.

Defensively, Southeast Guilford must replace Jax Hackett and Trey Love. Chad Stephens will play on

this side of the ball, too.

SMITH

OUTLOOK:

The Golden Eagles of Smith closed the 2017 season losing five of their last season games, but return junior quarterback Jordan Williams, who threw 10 touchdown pass and for 1,283 yards as a sophomore. Coach Brandon Wiggins on his expectations for 2018: “We lost depth at defensive and offensive line, and some playmakers at receiver; however, we return a good stable of running backs and will look to run the ball, and play good defense.” Defensively, Smith will be paced by linebacker Joseph Cheeks (71 tackles, one sack) and end Nicholas Witherspoon (18 tackles for loss).

OUTLOOK:

• Second-year coach Johnny Boykin plans to build on an impressive

7-5 record in 2017; however, Ragsdale will have to do that

without star running back Malachi Maness (1,390 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns), the 2017 Metro

4A Player of the Year.

• Veteran offensive linemen Jacob Gates and Cameron Blizzard return

to protect quarterback Devan Boykin, who will look to distribute the ball to playmakers Tre Goode,

Jonah Handy and Cameron Chapman.

COACH'S COMMENTS: • Head coach Jared Rolfes looks to build on an impressive debut season at Page, when he helped lead the Pirates to 11 wins and an appearance in the state quarterfinals, which ended in a 9-5 defeat to state runner-up Mallard Creek.

• The Pirates return plenty of skill on offense, including Javondre Paige at quarterback (2,011 pass yards, 34 total touchdowns) and all-purpose star Cody King, who collected 12 total touchdowns in 2017.

Coach Eric Rainey knows his offense lacks experience but has a bellwether back: “Offensively, we

will be young at most positions. We will lean on our experienced

running back Tyrey Graham to carry much of the offensive load.”

Rainey on his defense: “We will belong and strong up front,

anchored by three-time all-conference nose tackle John Oxce.

We will be fast on defense.”

COACH'S COMMENTS: Coach Jason Bradley on his signal-caller: “Offensively, we will return our starting quarterback Myles Crisp, though he will be a sophomore, he grew tremendously at the position.

On defense, Bradley’s talisman is Roman Johnson, the Mid-Piedmont 3A Defensive Player of the Year (132 tackles, 17 sacks): “At the moment, Roman has offers from eight schools (including Elon, Navy, Army). Roman is our leader and anchor on defense.”

OUTLOOK: After a winless 2017 season (0-11), there’s plenty of room for growth for Western Guilford. The Hornets must replace quarterback Edrick Purnell, who threw for 1,000 yards and ran for 1,000 yards, too, in 2017.

On defense, Western Guilford will be led by linebacker Trimon Holland (77 tackles) in the Piedmont Triad 3A — one of the toughest conferences in the state.
